00:00When we think of the telenovela Ruby, the beautiful face of Barbara Morey is what comes
00:05to mind.
00:06But did you know that other actresses have already taken on the difficult mission of
00:11playing this protagonist who is as beautiful as she is dangerous?
00:16Including some actresses we already know from other stories.
00:20But let's start from the beginning.
00:22Long before it was a telenovela, Ruby was a comic book.
00:27That's right!
00:28It was inspired by a comic book story by author Yolanda Vargas Dulce, released in 1963.
00:37In 1968, Mexico produced its first television version of Ruby.
00:44The mission of being the first Ruby Perez fell to actress Fanny Cano.
00:49And do you know who played Alejandro?
00:51Actor Antonio Medellin, who later played the character's father in the 2004 version.
00:58Of course, this version has some differences that make sense for the time period of the
01:03story.
01:03For example, Maribel and Hector didn't correspond by email, but by letter.
01:08If it were nowadays, they would have met on Tinder instead.
01:12Another difference is that the character's name was Cesar, not Hector.
01:16Why did they change the name?
01:18I have no idea.
01:20Now I'm going to talk about a heavier difference in this version.
01:24Ruby turns Cesar against Alejandro by accusing the poor guy of trying to abuse her.
01:30I can guess why they changed that part.
01:33It would have been way too heavy for a male lead in the 2000s era.
01:37Another big difference is that Maribel is not abandoned at the altar dressed as a bride.
01:42She overhears a conversation in which the groom is inviting Ruby to run away with him to New
01:48York, and that's how she discovers the whole truth.
01:52Remember that Hector had a back problem caused by a disease in the 2004 version?
01:57In this first version, the back problem is caused by a workplace accident at a construction
02:02site, and Maribel starts working at the hospital as a volunteer to take care of him.
02:07Thank goodness they changed that in the 2004 version.
02:12At the end, Ruby falls from a window, not onto that glass table.
02:17She tells the police that she threw herself out the window so as not to involve Alejandro
02:23in the story.
02:24In other words, the Ruby of this version wanted to protect the man she loved, not take revenge
02:30on him.
02:30And Alejandro doesn't end up with Maribel, but with a random nurse from the hospital named
02:35Eloisa.
02:36Phew, that's a lot, right?
02:38There must be even more differences, but the core of the story is basically the same.
02:43Two years later, in 1970, the success of Ruby reached bigger screens, and a film version
02:50was produced also in Mexico.
02:52Well, of course a movie format version had to be much more condensed, right?
02:56That's why many of the dramas that would fit into a novella had to be cut, presenting only
03:02the central plot of the story.
03:07And do you know which diva took on the mission of being the second Ruby?
03:11Actress Iran Iori, whom we know as Victoria from Maria Labadio, and also as the sugar mommy
03:18Lourdes from La Usurpadora.
03:21After the film, Ruby literally went into the freezer.
03:24It took more than 30 years for them to make the third audiovisual version in 2004.
03:32But thank goodness producer Jose Alberto Castro decided to take Ruby out of oblivion, right?
03:38After all, his version ended up being the most famous and the most remembered.
03:43This time, the difficult mission fell to Barbara Morey.
03:47And difficult is an understatement.
03:50Barbara has said many times how hard it was for her to play this character.
03:54But there's no denying it, is there?
03:57The actress's incomparable beauty consolidated her as the Ruby that will always be remembered
04:03first.
04:04Well, now I'm going to talk about a lesser-known version of Ruby, the Filipino version.
04:09Starring actress Angelica Panigaben, this version is a remake produced in 2010 by the network
04:17ABCCBN.
04:18I don't have many details about this version, nor am I up to date on the Filipino soap opera
04:24scene.
04:24But from the trailer, we can see that the story took a bit of a detour.
04:29Ruby even had a birthmark that looked like a Ruby.
04:32Besides that, it seems Ruby was born in prison.
04:35Ah, I don't know guys, I didn't even recognize the story properly from the first images of
04:41that trailer.
04:41But later, I got my bearings and I think they created a first part with Ruby's childhood
04:47story, and then in the second phase, they followed the story we already know.
04:51And you can tell they created some extra situations to make the novella more dramatic, with more
04:57fights and shouting.
04:58Well, shall we go back to the Latin remakes?
05:01In 2020, a shorter and different version of Ruby was produced as part of a Fabrica de
05:06Sueños project which made shorter versions of several famous novellas, and which was heavily
05:12criticized by fans, by the way.
05:15This time, the task of being the new Ruby went to Camila Sodhi, the niece of Thalia and Laura
05:21Zappa.
05:25Even though she is very beautiful, the actress suffered from the criticism of fans of the
05:30previous Mexican version, who constantly compared her to Barbara Mori.
05:34Camila was definitely the most pressured and criticized Ruby.
05:38In fact, she suffered from it so much that she re-recorded the song A Quien Le Importa of
05:45her aunt Thalia to be the opening theme of her version.
05:48That's because the lyrics of Thalia's song said exactly what Camila wanted to say to everyone
05:54who was tearing her apart on the internet.
05:56When a remake is just a copy and paste, I won't deny that I usually compare it to my favorite
06:02version.
06:03But in the case of this version, the story has a different proposal.
06:07That's why when I watched it, I decided to see it with the eyes of someone watching
06:11a new story, and I liked it.
06:14I'm not going to say it was a masterpiece, but it managed to entertain me.
06:18Well, now I want to know from you, which versions of Ruby have you already seen?
