11:20And I've actually designed my own deck of cards recently.
11:23It's called the Zed Ray deck, which I designed with a friend of mine, an artist called Vince Ray.

11:35expect from a normal pack.
11:36But when you get through to the aces, we've kind of sort of customized them so they're kind of like

11:43And the court cards are the most interesting bit because you get what you'd normally get, your queen of clubs
11:48and your king of spades, but they're different characters.
11:50Mostly kind of underworld sort of comic book characters.
11:52We've got a snake dancer, a sword swallower, a lady with a quirk, we've got a robber, all those kind
11:59of things.
12:00So, pretty dodgy characters in general.

12:05And we're going to use this for a kind of little whodunit type mystery.

22:38because I'm sitting next to Paul, who specialises in deception,
22:41of the best kind.
22:43And I'll start with the phrase to pull the wool over somebody's eyes,
22:47which is to hoodwink them or deceive them in some way.
22:50And this probably goes back, as you might expect,
22:52to the days of British and American courts,
22:55when all officials would wear the wigs that we're still familiar with today.
22:59And the idea was that a criminal or, in fact, a crafty lawyer
23:02could hoodwink the jury or the judge
23:04by figuratively pulling his wig over his eyes
23:07and thus deceiving him.
23:09And that brings me to a phrase that I'm asked about an awful lot,
23:12which is pulling someone's leg,
23:13and where that phrase comes from.
23:16We're not completely sure,
23:18but to pull is meant to rob or swindle somebody for centuries.
23:21To pull a pigeon in the 1600s
23:23was to fleece an unsuspecting person.
23:25Well, pull devil was a shout
23:27that was meant to urge someone on in a contest,
23:30usually of a particularly shady kind.
23:32And pulling someone's leg
23:33seems to have been criminal slang among street thieves,
23:37for they'd work in pairs,
23:39and one of them would use a rope or a piece of wire
23:41and would trip up an unsuspecting passerby,
23:44while the other thief stole the victim's money.
23:47So pulling your leg may have originally referred
23:50to the way the tripper up, if you like, of the pair
23:52made someone tumble.
23:54But there are other linguists
23:55who see it as being even darker,
23:57and there are references to hangmen
23:58who would pull on the leg of a victim
24:01to make sure that they were dead,
24:03having the last laugh, if you like.
24:04But either way, very shady origins, I would say.
