00:00Poll question of the day. Poll question is brought to you by AAA Commanders membership.
00:05How much should the new coordinators affect playing time in the preseason? And listen,
00:10I think what will happen is very different than maybe what the conversation should be,
00:15what should happen, right? I think what will happen, and we've seen this with the Burgundy
00:19Gold organization, is a significant focus on keeping players healthy and keeping them out
00:25of harm's way. Yeah. And I think that's why these joint practices are so important. Very much.
00:31You know, those are specific situations we got to see yesterday with specific goals,
00:35and I think they feel like they got really good work. But I think we look at the training camp,
00:44joint practices, they look at the fact that they've been doing this since March, April, OTAs.
00:51And Ryan, I was just talking to him before I walked out. I was like, look, man,
00:55these starters, for the most part, they got this stuff. They want the backups to be up to par now.
01:03You get what I'm saying? So they probably feel very comfortable with certain aspects of the starting
01:08group. You can't not play some of them. I think some of them will probably get a little play,
01:14but you're not going to play a ton of them, I would say.
01:19Yeah, I think there's certain guys that are starters that could probably use some playing
01:26time. Young guys, guys in new positions, stuff like that, right? But I don't think Jaden Daniels
01:34needs to play or should play. And I don't think it has anything to do with him knowing David Blau's
01:38system because him and Blau have been working on that system since December.
01:42Yeah. And like, I just, to me, it's all risk reward. And the risk is far greater than the
01:49reward, even if it's a series. Like, I think with, what did we see last year? The season swung
01:57when Jaden couldn't play. And I just don't see the value of an August game being significant enough.
02:04Maybe next week in Detroit, you want to get him a little bit of work where you're still
02:07almost four weeks out from week one.
02:10Yeah, but like, I know that, but I understand the way people do stuff today. But you watch
02:17other teams that have guys that are the same level, same quality, and they play. And it
02:24just makes you think which way is right. You know, I don't know which way is right, but
02:30I know one thing. The people that are ready to hit the ground running on first week are
02:37the guys who play football. You know what I mean? And it just goes that way. And how
02:43much do you think it's impacted though, by, by far the toughest camp Dan Quinn has run
02:50here? I think that is, I think that's helped. Uh, but still all this stuff I'm saying today,
02:59which is August 13th, when I watched the first game on September, what is it? 13th, 14th or
03:07something, 13th, 13th, 13th. I'm going to judge things based off of how the approach goes during
03:16preseason. Cause I, my experience tells me when you ease through it, you don't, you're
03:27not necessarily where you want to be, uh, in that first week, you can still get where
03:32you want to go and right in the season. And normally you see more veteran teams that can
03:37do that where they can not really go as much. And then they get into the season, they boom,
03:41they're ready to go. Cause they understand it. This team has a lot of veteran players,
03:46but it's a lot of young guys who use dependent on. And I wonder if those guys would be ready
03:51to just hit the ground going, you know, like on a commercial, I mean, on a cartoon, the
03:56guy's legs are moving in there and they hit the ground when they go. I want to see if they
03:59could do that. Like to me, a guy that's going to matter for this team this fall or hopefully
04:04matter for this team this fall is a player like Luke McCaffrey. I think he should play
04:09tomorrow night. I think Terry McLaurin and Steph digs one. It seemed like Terry, even
04:14if it's super minor kind of tweak something in that Dolphins practice rest, like rest.
04:20I think digs has been in so many offenses and has performed at such a high level that
04:26maybe he goes a little in Detroit, but like he just got here. He's been here six
04:31days. He doesn't need to play tomorrow night. We need to see something in these three
04:37games from some of those guys. Some of those stars. Agreed. Something over the
04:41course of the three games. And I think it's minimal for the top, top names. And
04:46it comes next week in Detroit. You know, my every year, Jay, we've been doing this
04:50five, six years now. Every year, I give you the same analogy. Human beings are not
04:59machines. And if they, if people take the damn machine and they go run around that
05:05track for 200 miles, cause it's going to be a 20 mile race, human beings got to do
05:09something to show that they're ready to go. They got to get up to top speed in one
05:15of these preseason games before the season starts, actually. You know what I mean?
05:19An interesting one to me. What about a guy like Chig Akankwo, who's going into his
05:24fifth year? You know, he's been in the NFL for some time, but hardly like an
05:28established vet, I would say, who is projected to have a significant role with
05:33this team. But also maybe you want to see him run the routes in a game setting
05:38like that. That to me is a player. That's interesting. Well, based off the last two
05:43years, I'm not expecting many stars to play like the, the not, I'm not going to say
05:51starters. I'm going to say the accomplished persons. Yeah. People. I'm not expecting those
05:56guys to play in the first preseason game. That's just how the league has gone. Now
06:00the first preseason game is like the, the guys that are going to be filling in and
06:08doing stuff. And the guys who are in these major little battles down to the
06:10roster, those guys get most of the play. And that's what I expect. Like, like a, a
06:17dude, they brought in Charles and Menehu. I think he's going to play tomorrow night.
06:21Odafa Owe, I don't think he's going to play. And, and, and I can kind of,
06:26I think if you're having honest discourse, you can understand that
06:30delineation. Yeah. Like players where the, listen, yes, it's a 90 man roster
06:37right now. And the second half of this game, probably going to be mostly players
06:41that aren't making teams. And maybe they make practice squads here or elsewhere.
06:46Yeah. I think, uh, they look for like, you, you, you make this comment a lot. It's no
06:51longer 53, it's 70. That's what they're looking for. 70, 71. If you got like a,
06:56uh, a good player that's from, uh, what's called it? The European, the
07:01player, international, that's a bad way player. That's, that's an extra one right
07:04there. Right. So yeah, you get 16 plus one. Yeah. Like I almost wonder Nick cross
07:11is in a similar situation as chick. He's going into his fifth season, played out
07:15his rookie deal signed here as a free agent. But the amount of time I see Nick
07:20cross on the field with the starters in practice, I don't think he's playing
07:24tomorrow night. Maybe he goes though. Have you heard them talking about Nick
07:28cross? Yes. They're in love. Listen, the way that they talk about Nick cross, he
07:33probably be sitting next to Jayden. Like even the corners, what can be
07:43interesting? Like Rasul Douglas has looked really good in camp and has a long track
07:48record of being able to play in season. Well, Sue Douglas might, hell, he might be
07:54your first corner right now, but he might be your fourth, but I still don't know
07:58that you're going to see him tomorrow night. I want to open the phones on this
08:00800-636-1067, 800-636-1067. I don't know who, what, when we see tomorrow night.
08:11There's a, there are some guys I'm fired up to see tomorrow night that I feel
08:14confident we'll see tomorrow night. I got two numbers for you. The 40s. Let me
08:19see 41 and 48. I want to see Javante Jean Baptiste, who I think has looked good
08:24at camp. I want to see Joshua Josephs, who I think has looked quite good in
08:27camp. Those are the kind of dudes. You've been talking about JJ. Yup, dude. I'm, I'm
08:33giving people a nickname these days, dog. Smart. You got to call their names
08:35Friday night. Like, you know what? I couldn't help but notice. And so last night I
08:42taped all yours, right? And I saw some of it. Good. Thank you. Hope you
08:47enjoyed it. Um, fell asleep on it. No, I'm joking. Perfect. Nah, that's what we
08:52strive for. Cause then you just leave your TV on four all night. We get the
08:55rating. Um, we, it was a really, it was a fun little clip of Jacoby Jones at the
09:00end talking about what his preseason touchdown meant to him last year in New
09:06England. And like those moments matter. That matters for Jacoby Jones, who makes a
09:11practice squad and is now sticking around into his second NFL season. These
09:14guys are making decent money on the practice squad. Don't be fooled by that
09:17either. But I couldn't help but notice when Jacoby Jones scored that touchdown in
09:21New England, Julian good Jones was on the field at guard. Like the dude playing
09:28center. Like my own, my biggest concern leaving that Miami practice was an, it was
09:33an interior offensive line, not performing so well. I think that's going to look
09:38different with Alec Reddy. I don't think it'll look different tomorrow night, but
09:41I think it will look different once Alec Reddy gets back out there. I want to take
09:45your calls. Actually, I'm going to sneak Terry and Dan Mill in real quick. Terry, what
09:49do you want to see Friday night against the Dolphins?
09:52Yes, sir. Thanks for having me on. I would love to see them play at least a half. The
10:00first string, at least a half. The second game, I would say a half. The third game, I would
10:07say at least one to two series because I believe doing the same thing over and over
10:11again, expecting a different result. It's a sign of insanity. And that's what we've
10:17been doing for the last 10 years. It was a blessing in disguise. And Lerman Thompson
10:21was injured before the preseason. That gives them time to prepare other people. You can't
10:27worry about injuries. I could walk into a game to play and be warming up and pull my
10:32hamstring. And I'm out for two or three weeks. So you can't control that. You just
10:38got to play football. Thank you.
10:41Appreciate you, Terry. All right, we're going to take your calls when we return. It's
10:44B. Mitch and Finn.
