00:00Stefan Diggs, new addition at wide receiver
00:03for the Washington Commanders.
00:05Been here about a week.
00:07When he stepped out on the field,
00:10right next to Terry McLaurin, who's number 17,
00:13he was wearing number 18.
00:15I actually thought it looked pretty cool that 17 and 18,
00:18you're one and two receivers, or you're 1A and 1B.
00:22But he wants number seven, apparently.
00:25Joe Theismann is number seven.
00:28And his number hasn't been retired,
00:31but it's kind of a soft retirement of the number.
00:35Now, Dwayne Haskins wanted to wear number seven,
00:37and Joe Theismann said, okay, you can wear number seven.
00:40Let's hear what he had to say on Grant and Danny's show
00:43about Stefan Diggs.
00:44Well, it isn't a question of me letting him wear it.
00:47I mean, it's a decision that the Commanders are going to make,
00:50not me.
00:51I have, you know, the jersey belongs to the football team.
00:54I was blessed and fortunate enough to be able to wear it
00:57for 12 years, and honored to be able to wear it for 12 years.
01:02But that's a decision that the club's got to make.
01:07I don't know why they keep putting Joe in this position.
01:10They've got to stand up for him.
01:11He's going to say the same thing.
01:12I mean, Joe's, Joe, I listened to Sheehan yesterday.
01:18He went through all the guys that he thought absolutely deserved
01:20to have their numbers retired.
01:23I'm not a particular expert on that,
01:25or it's not particularly something I'm overly concerned with.
01:28But Joe Theismann was right in the heart of my era.
01:30And I feel like if you're going to protect his number as long as you have
01:35protected it prior to that debacle with Dwayne and, you know, RIP Dwayne.
01:40But that guy, I just don't know why they're putting the onus on Joe.
01:48I mean, you're putting him in an impossible situation to bless the team
01:53to do it or whatever.
01:53Of course he probably would prefer to have his jersey retired.
01:58I know some people think it's, you know, it's a case, 50-50 kind of case.
02:04To me, he's a legend.
02:06He's an icon.
02:07They protected the jersey for that long.
02:09You're going to give it to a guy who's going to be here for a year?
02:13I don't know.
02:14I very much don't like this ending up in Joe.
02:20Now, I guess you could make the argument Stefan did this because he said,
02:23hey, you know, talk to Joe, get his blessing or whatever.
02:28I don't like it.
02:30I just don't like it.
02:32I think that Joe should have nothing to do with it.
02:35Stefan shouldn't put that kind of pressure on him.
02:38Why does he want to wear seven?
02:40I think it was his high school number.
02:42I think he wore it at good council.
02:43That's my understanding.
02:45Did he ever wear seven in the NFL?
02:47He wore 14.
02:48I don't want different numbers.
02:50I don't want so.
02:51I think it's his good council number.
02:53That's kind of weird.
02:53Well, I mean, he is coming home.
02:55Look, there's not that many numbers, I think, that are available.
02:56When you look through, there aren't that many.
02:59In fact, they gave him a number of, I can't remember who the other guy's got his number
03:02right now.
03:03There's two 18s in camp.
03:05Oh, there are?
03:05Okay.
03:06I got to look.
03:07He can choose from zero to 19 and then 80 through 89, couldn't he?
03:12Yeah.
03:12He can, except for guys that are already using him.
03:15The problem is just what's available right now.
03:171-800-636-1067.
03:19Should the commanders allow Stefan Diggs to wear number seven, Joe Theismann's number
03:25hasn't been retired, but it's kind of this soft retirement, and I agree with you.
03:28They put him in an awkward spot when players want number seven.
03:31They probably should just retire his number.
03:33Just retire.
03:33And I don't think anybody who grew up a Redskins fan during the heyday would have a problem
03:38with Joe Theismann's number being retired.
03:40I know he's not as qualified as Art Monk, like in terms of Hall of Fame and greatness.
03:47If he didn't have a catastrophic injury, he probably would be.
03:49He was playing at a very high level when he was injured.
03:53But he was one of the key guys for at least two of the Super Bowl runs.
03:59And by the way, who's been nothing but a total ambassador slash homer for the team this
04:05entire time?
04:06They should.
04:06Why didn't you do this?
04:07And here's the thing.
04:08Definitely a homer.
04:08Why didn't you do this, Joe?
04:10I wouldn't doubt that they are planning to.
04:12Like Josh Harris and the ownership group, they've been hitting home runs on all of these
04:18ceremonies that they have during the season, right?
04:20And Riggins, even Riggins coming back to call the games.
04:23And they're going to honor John Riggins during the season.
04:27They've done Daryl Green.
04:29They did Art Monk.
04:32They might be planning to do Joe Theismann.
04:34It just might be in 2027, 2028.
04:36Like they might be doing, you know, one per year.
04:39I don't think anybody would have a problem if they retired his number.
04:42So I just put this up as our poll of the day.
04:44And you can call in at 1-800-636-1067.
04:46I don't think they should allow Diggs to have number seven.
04:48And they shouldn't put Theismann in that awkward spot.
04:52They've got to stop doing it.
04:53Now, again, in this instance, I've got to blame Diggs.
04:56And, you know, I'm sure he doesn't mean any ill will by it.
04:59He means it good natured that he'd love to wear the number.
05:01And, hey, say something.
05:02You know, he doesn't mean it in a bad way.
05:03I get it.
05:04But he's from the area.
05:05He knows what Joe Theismann's name and number mean to the city.
05:09I don't know if he does.
05:10He might be young enough that he doesn't, Jason.
05:13I know, but he's got family members that are older.
05:16I mean, I would think he would know seven.
05:18I'm sure he's familiar with Joe.
05:19But Joe, I mean, Joe, to me, when people ask me who I get the most kick out of interviewing,
05:24you know, all these years, Cal's one of those guys, Joe T is right up there.
05:28Oh, yeah.
05:28Like I get emotional talking to Joe Theismann.
05:31I tell you, when I wrote Faith Restored, he was unbelievable to me.
05:34I wanted like a little of his time.
05:36I think I talked to him on the phone a few times.
05:39He wrote the foreword for the book.
05:41He was unbelievable.
05:45It's really frustrating.
05:46Now, there also is an issue where, you know, you can't retire 40 numbers.
05:53That's true.
05:53There is a limit to it at some point.
05:55And there's still quite a few other numbers, I think, that they have that probably deserve to be retired,
06:00that haven't been retired yet.
06:02So, there is a kind of a number issue.
06:06But I just hate that Joe's in this spot again.
06:10Especially since he's only going to probably wear it for a year, like you said.
06:13Our junkies poll of the day is brought to you by Surfside Iced Tea and Vodka,
06:16or Surfside Lemonade and Vodka this summer.
06:18Grab a Surfside, your go-to canned cocktail.
06:20It's made with real vodka.
06:22Only 100 calories and zero bubbles.
06:24It's not a seltzer.
06:25It's Surfside.
06:26Must be 21.
06:27Please drink responsibly.
06:27And the poll is, should the commanders allow Stephon Diggs to wear number seven?
06:32Let's go to the phones.
06:331-800-636-1067.
06:36All right.
06:36Let's go to Greg in D.C.
06:37Greg, what's up, buddy?
06:39You're on with the junkies.
06:40Hey.
06:41What's going on, fellas?
06:42Hey.
06:43He's going to be there for a year or two.
06:47And, like, we already gave it to Dwayne Haskins.
06:50Like, you know, I mean, a number is a number.
06:52But, like, that man was the first quarterback that won the Super Bowl in our modern era of time.
06:58Like, went back-to-back.
07:00Yeah.
07:00And he's a good stand-up.
07:01He was a leader for the team back then.
07:03There's no way.
07:04I know Joe Thompson.
07:05He's a stand-up guy.
07:06Like, he don't mind because he's got nothing to do with the organization.
07:09That's up to them.
07:10But the organization needs to retire his jersey.
07:12Like, come on, man.
07:14Yeah.
07:14He's a part of that.
07:16Yeah.
07:16He's an icon for those of us that remember that era.
07:19I mean, just an absolute icon.
07:22And they've held it out, you know, for that long until the Haskins debacle.
07:26And that was largely just because the owner was so involved.
07:29And he kind of gave his stars and his chosen guys kind of they could do whatever they wanted.
07:35And he supported that.
07:37It's just an awkward situation.
07:40But, again, as far as I know, the teams hadn't had anything to do with this.
07:44This was Diggs bringing it up on his social media.
07:47Yeah.
07:47He's the one that kind of created this.
07:49But I wish someone would tell him, hey, Seven really is kind of off limits.
07:54Maybe somebody will now.
07:56Don't go out there and lobby and pressure Joe.
07:58We already put him in an awkward spot just a few years ago.
08:00I don't think he's that familiar with Joe Theismann.
08:02He's 33 years old.
08:03Maybe he isn't.
08:04But I would assume that his family is.
08:06I know.
08:07But they may not have really told him.
08:09Okay.
08:09But it's just all in conversation.
08:11You just start asking people.
08:12And, by the way, I don't think he means ill will by it.
08:14No, I don't think so either.
08:15He wants to wear number seven.
08:16I'm Team Diggs.
08:16I like Steph Diggs.
08:17I think it's great they signed him.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Just wish he wouldn't ask for this.
08:21Yeah.
08:21I don't know.
08:22Let's go to Brandon.
08:23How did he do it?
08:24So he only did it over social media.
08:25I think social media said, hey, let's get this.
08:26He should have just called Joe and said, hey, Joe.
08:29I think he even said, talk to the goat and see if he can get his blessing.
08:32Right.
08:32No, he tried to do it in a respectful way.
08:34Brandon, what's up?
08:36What's up, my fellas?
08:37Good morning.
08:38Hey.
08:38Hey, Brandon.
08:40What's up?
08:41So I'll say the way you solve the issue is, you know, any great redskin legend, I think
08:47all redskin numbers should be retired.
08:51And I think that any number for commander should be in circulation because, you know, the name
08:55redskins is retired just to solve the issue.
08:59Okay.
08:59So, yeah, but the ownership group is trying to connect both.
09:02They're trying to have the best of both worlds, right?
09:04They're living with the new name, but they want to connect it to the past.
09:07I see what you're doing there.
09:10Retire all the redskin numbers, but this is a different team, the commanders.
09:14But then people are going to be bitter, let's say, when John Riggins' number gets retired.
09:18If Fatman wanted 44, you know, people would be upset.
09:22Right, but that's my point.
09:23Even though Fatman never saw Riggins play, he would know what 44 meant.
09:27He would know that John Riggins was a great player here.
09:29He might not.
09:29Kings didn't even know what the Riggodrome was.
09:31No, but I'm saying people would tell him before he actually said, hey, I want to wear 44.
09:36That's what I'm saying.
09:37I don't know.
09:38And Diggs.
09:38Diggs talked to the equipment guys and say.
09:41Well, he just knew.
09:42He knew that the number wasn't retired, so he said, okay, let's, maybe he'll let me wear it.
09:47Wouldn't be a big deal.
09:48Right.
09:48But.
09:48He definitely knows the name Joe Theiser.
09:50But maybe the equipment guys didn't really understand.
09:53Maybe even the equipment guy.
09:54I don't even know who the current equipment guy is.
09:55I know it's not the old Diggs.
09:57You think the lowly equipment guy can go up to Diggs and be like, hey.
10:01And when Diggs goes, hey, let me get that seven.
10:03And the guy's, nah, not for you, bro.
10:05You think the equipment guy can say that to Diggs?
10:07Well, I know that the old guy would have.
10:09Really?
10:09The guy, I think his name was Jay Brunetti that was there for like 20 some years or more.
10:14He would say, hey, yeah, no, that one.
10:16We don't give that one out.
10:17It's off limits.
10:17Yeah.
10:18But I don't know who the equipment guy is now.
10:19I have no idea.
10:201-800-636-1067 if you want to chime in.
10:25We're the junkies on the fan.
