Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs are 1A and 1B right now - but the Commanders have close to a dozen receivers in camp for what is now one less active roster spot. Whose position got knocked down a notch to the bubble now that Diggs is in the fold?

00:22So who is your odd man out in the receiver room with the ad of Stefan Diggs?
00:28That was the big news of yesterday.
00:29It broke around 3 p.m. that Diggs and the team had agreed on a one-year deal worth up
00:36to $12
00:36million to shore up a pretty big hole on the offense.
00:42There were a lot of question marks about the number two wide receiver for the last couple
00:46of months.
00:47Now those questions have been answered.
00:49Diggs is on the roster.
00:51Who will not make the roster now as a result of that?
00:54You're going to have some of those guys down the roster with their heads on a swivel
00:58and they better be impressing throughout camp to try to grab a spot because that's one more
01:05assured spot that will not be for one of those guys at the bottom.
01:08So these three preseason games, the first one's Miami, I believe, here.
01:12They're going to be big for a handful of those guys.
01:14Absolutely.
01:15It could be.
01:16I think it's pretty obvious.
01:18It's Van Jefferson.
01:19And it's not just one guy.
01:20I think it's Van Jefferson, Traylon Burks.
01:23I think that because they play special teams, Jalen Lane and McCaffrey are safe.
01:29Plus McCaffrey supposedly has been popping in training camp.
01:33Yep.
01:33If you want to chime in, 1-800-636-1067.
01:36They re-signed or brought back Deami Brown, who produced for Dan Quinn and Adam Peters.
01:43So to me, it's Traylon Burks, who, you know, nice story.
01:47Well, they also signed Burks.
01:48Burks also got a deal in the offseason, too.
01:50Yeah, but I don't feel like they're as loyal to him as they are to Deami.
01:53Like, Deami got away from them, got a big deal to play in Jacksonville, and they brought
02:00him back.
02:00And I think they know what he can do.
02:02He produced during that playoff run.
02:06So I would favor, like, if it comes down to two guys out, I would favor Deami Brown over
02:11Traylon Burks.
02:12I actually have Burks ahead of Deami Brown.
02:15Like, if they keep six, I have Burks as six, and I have Deami as the first odd man out.
02:22And if they were somehow able to keep seven or wanted to keep seven, I have Deami making
02:26it and Jefferson being the guy who's going to be looking for a new team heading forward.
02:31I just hope that Deami, and I think Scotty A said he dropped a couple passes, but I just
02:37hope that he's looked really good, because I believe they do need him because of his speed.
02:42Well, you also fell in love with him because of the YouTube video.
02:44He just seems like a cool dude.
02:45But I'm sure Burks is cool.
02:47I'm sure Van Jefferson's cool.
02:49And if I'm Burks, I better not pick up another little nagging injury.
02:53Now, I know he only missed one day of camp because of foot soreness.
02:56Yeah, he was fine after that.
02:57But he can't afford to have something that keeps him out of camp multiple days around
03:04the preseason games.
03:05If that happens, that's disaster for him, I think, as far as making this team.
03:10So the locks are obviously McLaurin, Diggs, Williams, and then McCaffrey and Lane because
03:17they play special teams.
03:18I feel like they're locks.
03:18So McCaffrey has looked good.
03:19I think they're locks because of that.
03:21I think Jalen, who was really good last year as a returner, lock.
03:28I think McCaffrey less so if they have somebody else who can handle the kickoff returns.
03:33Remember, kickoff returns don't even happen as often as they used to.
03:36But he's also looked good in route running and catching the ball.
03:39He's caught some touchdown passes from Jaden.
03:40And he's also pretty effective at kickoff returns.
03:43And he was the 100th overall pick.
03:46It's not like a first-round pick, but a third-round pick.
03:49I don't think they want to give up on him right now.
03:51I don't think so.
03:52I think that buys him at least one more year on the roster.
03:55So I think you're right.
03:56I think it's one spot for, unless they somehow keep seven receivers, which is kind of rare.
04:02Why?
04:03Sometimes people only keep five.
04:04I'm just saying, that's rare.
04:06So I don't know why you'd keep seven.
04:07So I'm going to say it's one spot for Burks, Jefferson, and Diami.
04:11And I think Diami is going to win that spot.
04:13And as far as any of these other names that you hear sprinkled around in camp, guys like
04:17Jacoby Jones and Jaden Bradley.
04:20Chris Hilton Jr.
04:21Those guys are practice squatters at best.
04:24Right.
04:25And that's why you have your practice squad.
04:27You develop young players.
04:28You keep them stashed there and hope they develop into something that you can use on a weekly
04:33basis due to injury.
04:35Or they just develop and they get better.
04:38But I don't think any of those guys are in the mix for a 53-man roster spot at this
04:44point.
04:44No.
04:46The receiving core changed dramatically just by one guy being in there.
04:50It's now established.
04:52Whereas we thought a lot of these people would be filling roles and competing for number two.
04:58That's over.
04:59Yeah.
05:00McCorn and Diggs are going to catch the vast majority of the balls at wide receiver.
05:06The rest of the guys, including Antonio Williams.
05:10If you put in Antonio Williams, Deami Brown, McCaffrey, Jalen Lane, they're going to be competing
05:17for about 40 or 50 catches.
05:18If Diggs plays all 17 games, he's going to catch 80 balls in this offense.
05:26I mean, I think JP said 68, and I think that's probably a minimum.
05:33I know that everybody wants to immediately slot him in as the number two guy in deference
05:39to Terry McLaurin.
05:40And I love Terry McLaurin, but at the peak of their powers, who's been a better wide receiver
05:47in the NFL?
05:48I don't even think it's that close.
05:49Stephon Diggs has a better resume than Terry McLaurin.
05:53Now, is that all Terry McLaurin's fault?
05:55No, because he's played generally before Jaden Daniels got here with a bunch of bad quarterbacks
06:01throwing him the ball.
06:02I mean, at some point, Steph Diggs has had Josh Allen and Drake May and some decent quarterbacks
06:07in Minnesota delivering him the ball.
06:09But I know that everybody wants to call him the number two guy here.
06:14I think it's closer than you think as far as...
06:16The 1A, 1B.
06:17Yes.
06:17However you want to term him.
06:18I mean, I think right now, Terry's a little bit younger.
06:21I think that...
06:23And when we talked to Ben Valin, who covered him for the Boston Globe and saw all of his
06:28games last year for the Patriots, he said maybe he's not as quick as he is in the past.
06:32So I would give a slight edge to the physical abilities right now to Terry McLaurin over
06:39Stephon Diggs.
06:40But both are accomplished.
06:41And you could definitely make an argument that Stephon Diggs is more accomplished than
06:45Terry McLaurin.
06:461-800-636-1067.
06:49I mean, to me, it's kind of a no-brainer.
06:51I mean, if I was making the cuts today, it'd be like, bye-bye, Trelon.
06:55Nice having you.
06:56Bye-bye, Van Jefferson.
06:58You're a jag.
06:59I think that the fascination with Trelon Burks is he was a number one first-round draft pick
07:05several years ago, but he's still relatively young.
07:08They like the traits that he has.
07:10It's just that he hasn't been able to put it all together and string together one really
07:15successful NFL season at this point without getting injured and without spending time
07:20in the injured list.
07:21Like, that's been his major problem.
07:24But just do the math.
07:25Antonio Williams, McCaffrey, Lane, and whoever your sixth receiver is, they're not going to
07:30catch combined as many balls as either Stephon Diggs or Terry McLaurin.
07:36No, I mean, unless one of those guys gets injured and misses significant time, they're
07:41going to be the stalwarts of the receiving game.
07:43I think Chig, if, I mean, Zach Ertz two years ago caught 66 balls, so he was the number
07:49two target, essentially.
07:51He had the second most targets, but they didn't have that true number two.
07:55McLaurin was the number one, had 82 catches.
07:57If Chig catches in that 60, now maybe now that Diggs is here, he doesn't catch as many
08:03balls, but I still think he's going to catch a considerable amount.
08:07So maybe the Diggs-McClaurin numbers do tick down a little bit based on expectations.
08:13And I think the offense is going to be different.
08:14I think they want to run the ball.
08:16They want to run.
08:16They want to run.
08:16It may not be as fast-paced as what we're used to, where, I mean, they were barely in
08:22the huddle.
08:24I know I'm generalizing, but for two years, when Jaden Daniels is under center, and he's
08:29not under center, he's in shotgun, they're barely in huddle.
08:33So I think that all of the numbers are going to come down to an extent.
08:37That doesn't mean that they don't have a better offense.
08:40They should have a better offense.
08:41There really shouldn't be any excuses this year for Jaden Daniels.
08:45You can't point to, well, they didn't give him any help.
08:48He's got plenty of help.
08:49Despite the system, despite the coordinator change, like last year, you're heading into
08:55a season where they're relying on Noah Brown to be basically their number two wide
09:01out, unless I'm missing somebody off the top of my head.
09:05That sounds right.
09:06They had plans on Noah Brown being the number two.
09:08This year, Steph Diggs is the second wide receiver, if not 1A, 1B with Terry McLaurin.
09:14It's a vast upgrade for this team.
09:17Well, last year, they kind of thought Debo would have been your number two.
09:21Okay, Debo, that's true.
09:22He did lead with Terry being hurt.
09:24But with McLaurin out, Debo was your one.
09:26So after that, yeah, I would say, well, and then you had Ertz, so they threw the ball
09:30a bunch to Ertz.
09:31But last year, I'm throwing it all out.
09:34I'm throwing it all out.
09:34Last year was a mess.
09:35Last year was a mess offensively.
09:38But I just think Chig is going to catch a lot of balls, and they're going to throw to
09:42Rashad White.
09:43I just think that you've got four really good, competent receivers that you can go to, as
09:49opposed to last year, where you just kind of had one, unless you want to throw Ertz
09:53in there.
09:53And I'm okay with the younger guys having less on their plate if you have a stud that
09:59you bring in in Stephon Diggs.
10:01I'm fine with them getting a lesser piece of the pie, because you have a guy who, coming
10:07off a knee injury, was a really big piece of a team that made it to the Super Bowl last
10:12year.
10:13Correct.
10:14At age 31.
10:15Even though he's older, he should be even better physically now than he was last year with
10:20the Patriots.
10:21He plays younger than his age, don't you think?
10:22Seemingly.
10:24Yeah.
10:24And I think he's going to be a massive threat for Jaden over the short to intermediate parts
10:30of the field.
10:31Middle of the field.
10:31He may not be a burner.
10:32He may not have the long catches, and Ben Willen touched on that earlier.
10:36He's not going to have a bunch of 20-yard down the field, over-the-shoulder type grabs.
10:40No.
10:42But he could take a 5- or 7-yard pass and make it a 20- or 30-yard
10:45gain.
10:46He still has that in his bag.
10:48He's going to be a move-the-chains guy.
10:50Absolutely.
10:51I think Terry's pretty good at deep balls.
10:53Yeah.
10:54So I look at Terry as more the deep ball guy.
10:56Ben Willen said he's going to be more inside, finding the spots in his own.
11:00And that's great.
11:02That's great.
11:02For Jaden Daniels, this is great.
11:05And I know Jaden was asked repeatedly about receivers a few days ago when he was asked,
11:13who's the receiver that has impressed you the most, or who do you trust the most beyond
11:17Terry McLaurin?
11:18He said he was really high about Traylon Burks.
11:20So maybe that comes into play.
11:22Cakes believes if Burks makes it, De'Ami Brown gets iced out.
11:25I just hope that there's no situation this year, especially in the first month, if the
11:30offense is struggling, it's not clicking, you know, they're losing, they play three really
11:37tough teams in the first three weeks and they're losing all these games.
11:40And then Diggs is complaining, I'm not getting the ball enough.
11:43I just hope that's not the case.
11:45I don't think it will be, but I hope that's not the case.
11:49I believe at the end of the text that I referenced that got sent to Mitch Tischler, he has a
11:54source
11:54in like that covered the Patriots.
11:56Well, you know who that source is, right?
11:59I know who's Ben Willen.
12:00Ben Willen, because they're high school buddies.
12:02I considered that, but I didn't want to ask him.
12:05Read the text.
12:05It's almost everything that Ben Willen said to us.
12:08Um, but he said, well, one of the lines was didn't complain about targets.
12:13Right, right.
12:13That's good.
12:14That, that's great to hear.
12:16Yeah.
12:16Like these top wide receivers, we know can be divas and Diggs has been a diva as in previous
12:23stops.
12:24Hopefully he's, you know, matured a bit and got, gotten rid of some of that diva, uh, label
12:29and is a mentor as a teacher to some of the younger guys on the roster.
12:33And it sounds like that's kind of what he did last year in new England.
12:36Hey, now the commanders have their own Taylor Swift too.
12:39It's Cardi B.
12:41The Chiefs fans, some of them love it, some of them hate it, that, uh, Taylor Swift is
12:46there.
12:47The commanders have Cardi B.
12:48Yep.
12:49You know, that's interesting that he did not complain about the targets.
12:52Cause I just looking at his game logs from last year, he wasn't getting targeted that
12:56much in the first month and they lost two of their first three and they lost to Vegas
13:00and they lost to Pittsburgh.
13:02And so they were struggling and they were one and three out of the gate and he wasn't
13:06complaining.
13:07So that's good.
13:08Right.
13:09Isn't that good?
13:09That's great.
13:10And hopefully, and he wants to be here.
13:12I'm, I'm sure he's very excited, uh, especially to play with McLaurin and I assume he and
13:17McLaurin are, you know, get along.
13:18So I just think it's, uh, I just can't think of many negatives.
13:23If any, I just want Jason to run into Cardi B and somewhere in Ashburn and ask her for
13:26a picture.
13:27And then he gets stiff armed by a big burly security guard.
13:31He gives him the highs.
13:32If I see her, I promise you, I will ask for a picture.
13:34I know it's kind of what you do.
13:35It's kind of your thing.
13:36Yep.
13:37All right.
13:37If you want to grade the Stefan digs signing by the commanders, you're welcome to do
13:40that on an open line Thursday.
13:42800-636-1067 is the number.
13:45A lot of Stefan digs excitement here on the fan.
