Did Stefon Diggs just hint at wanting to sign with the Washington Commanders this offseason? Kevin Sheehan gives his thoughts and reaction to Diggs' comments after being asked if he would want to return home and play with the Commanders this upcoming season.
Transcript
00:00So, Stefan Diggs was in town over the weekend where he held a Mother's Day event.
00:06And our own Wes Clark, Wes does a lot of our social media work, does it for both stations, 106
00:14.7 The Fan and 980.
00:17Wes was in here producing on Monday before Max got back from vacation yesterday.
00:23Wes went out and actually asked Stefan Diggs about playing here.
00:30For Washington, here's what Diggs said.
00:34As a D&B guy, you know, you're coming into free agency.
00:37Have you talked to some of the commander players?
00:38Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. I'm familiar with the city and I'm familiar with the people.
00:42So, we're going to see down the pipe over these next couple months what looks good, what makes sense.
00:47I definitely want to shed some light on them and, you know, might go check them out for a little
00:50bit.
00:51You know, just it's love. It's hometown. So, you know, it makes sense.
00:55But right now, you know, I kind of like take a breath.
00:57I've been training. I've been doing everything I'm supposed to.
00:59But I'm more targeting on the charitable stuff right now.
01:03And then, like, everything else will fall into place.
01:06There you go. That's what he said.
01:08You know, I definitely want to shed some light on them.
01:11Check them out for a little bit. It's love. It's hometown.
01:14So, it makes sense.
01:15But certainly not a commitment to or even expressing any sort of desire to play for Washington.
01:23But that didn't stop Pierre Garçon from weighing in on social media.
01:29The, you know, longtime wide receiver here in D.C.
01:33Prior to that in Indianapolis and then with the 49ers said with – there was a tweet that went out.
01:41Stefan Diggs' preferred place to play in 2026 is with the commanders.
01:46That was from some site called NFL Rumors.
01:49That's a trolling tweet because he didn't say that, obviously.
01:55But Pierre Garçon tweeted out, this would be really good for both sides.
02:00Lots of, you know, hands in the air praying for it to be true.
02:07And then he wrote, I believe it will happen.
02:10That was from Pierre Garçon.
02:13I actually don't believe it will happen.
02:16I would love for it to happen if Diggs is healthy and ready and hungry.
02:22And, you know, the Brandon Iyuk situation is going to be a long slog.
02:27Because that's what it's shaping up to be right now.
02:30Even if Brandon Iyuk is likely to Washington once he gets released,
02:36will the team want to wait it out, which could last, could last, until the end of August?
02:42Or would you rather get Stefan Diggs signed and in before training camp begins?
02:50And then, by the way, and many of you suggested this when we talked about it last week,
02:55what about both of them?
02:57Sure.
02:58Why not?
03:00None of these is going to be super expensive.
03:03The Iyuk deal is going to be all sort of prove it in terms of the format of the deal.
03:09It's going to be a one-year deal.
03:11It's going to be low on base.
03:12And it's going to be very high on incentives.
03:15Stefan Diggs has played more recently.
03:17Went for over 1,000 yards last year.
03:1985 receptions.
03:21Led the Patriots in both receptions and yards.
03:24He's probably going to get a lot of activity that would be beyond a prove-it deal.
03:32I'm sure there will be some comfort in the deal that he signs in terms of potentially more than one
03:39year
03:40and some guaranteed, real guaranteed money.
03:43But it's not going to be top-of-the-market wide receiver money for Stefan Diggs
03:48and probably not even middle-of-the-market wide receiver money at this point.
03:53But I'll tell you what.
03:55The more, and I've said this before, and Diggs for one season in this offense with Jaden Daniels,
04:03having a receiver like Terry on the field with him, he's never had that.
04:08The closest thing would be Adam Thielen when he was in Minnesota.
04:12And he was the number one and Thielen was the number two.
04:15Here you could make the case Terry's the one, Diggs is the two.
04:18He's never been in that position.
04:20Not in Minnesota, not in Buffalo, not in Houston for the eight games,
04:24although Nico Collins was on the roster, and then not last year in New England.
04:29It could be a really beneficial situation for Diggs and the offense.
04:36Diggs can still do it.
04:40And there's no doubt about what he is on game day, man.
04:43He is a big-time dog, man.
04:47This guy is truly competitive and does whatever it takes to win.
04:54Yes, when he's not being fed the football, there is potential that it could go sideways.
04:59But not to the degree that I think sometimes the reputation says.
05:04You know, maybe he is short dose, small dose.
05:09But one year here with maybe, you know, a second year where you could move on without much pain,
05:17I'm all on board for Stefan Diggs.
05:21And then if, you know, IU becomes available via waivers, you could do that too.
05:28They have a chance next year to be a good football team.
05:33It starts with the quarterback being healthy.
05:37It then goes to the defense, has to be improved.
05:41And then it goes to, you know, what else do they have in terms of true, you know,
05:47A players, A- players, B- players.
05:51Add one or two more offensively.
05:56Hey, I'm with Pierre.
05:58I think it would be good for both sides.
06:01I don't think it'll happen though.
06:03And here's why I don't think it'll happen.
06:05I think the IU thing is real.
06:08I think the team is willing to wait for IU.
06:12And I think it's, if Stefan Diggs knows that, he sizes up this opportunity
06:19where you would have Terry and IU.
06:21And he probably wants to be a number one or, you know, worst case, a 1A somewhere.
06:30And wouldn't choose here.
06:32He's going to have some choices.
06:34Stefan Diggs is too good at 32 years old.
06:36Played too well last year not to have some choices.
06:40Now that, you know, everything related to the felony charge, the misdemeanor charge,
06:46that's all behind him now.
06:48Found not guilty on both.
06:51The felony strangulation and assault and the misdemeanor assault and battery.
07:00I definitely would consider Stefan Diggs.
07:04I think the idea of Diggs and IU can Terry and Chig, a con quote, all out on the field
07:11next year
07:12with a healthy Jaden Daniels, I think that would scare a lot of teams.
07:17I think offensively they could be really good.
07:20Yeah, there's going to be a little bit of an adjustment to the new scheme.
07:24To the, you know, Ben Johnson, Kevin O'Connell, Shanahan, whatever Blau rolls out.
07:30You know, there was an adjustment for, you know, Caleb Williams last year.
07:34I actually think Jaden's more capable of adjusting even faster.
07:41I think this fit will be a good one.
07:44I think more play action pass attempts into the offense will be a great thing for a quarterback
07:49like Jaden Daniels.
07:50But man, it'd be nice to add more explosive playmaking ability on the field with him.
07:57I'd totally be in to Diggs.
08:01I kind of feel like, Max, we've done a lot of Diggs and IU conversation even together.
08:07But I'm not sure, phone line-wise, we've offered up this.
08:13You can only pick one, Diggs or IU.
08:18Which of the two would you select?
08:21They come with different timelines more likely than not.
08:25Diggs is here and ready for camp.
08:28IU perhaps is not and doesn't get added until midway through camp or maybe shortly before
08:34the regular season begins.
08:36And there's one thing about the Stefan Diggs.
08:38Like, if we were to bring him in before IU became available, don't you think that that
08:43would take a lot of the 49ers leverage away from us since we wouldn't be as desperate to
08:50sign somebody like IU as a wide receiver too?
08:54Well, I think the 49ers right now are in that mode of, I'm not doing him or any of my
09:04competitors
09:05any favors by turning him loose well in advance of when I have to.
09:11You know, they don't have to release him because they don't have to pay him until September 1st
09:17any money.
09:18So why not wait it out, whether it's Washington or somebody else, somebody could get desperate
09:24during training camp with injuries to wide receivers and say, fine, we'll give you a seventh
09:29round pick.
09:30The problem with trading for IU, as I've pointed out now for months, is that if you trade for
09:36him, you get his contract as well.
09:38And nobody wants to pay him $27.5 million next year and be on the hook for another $28 million
09:45in 2027.
09:47Not with his recent, you know, shenanigans over the last year and a half.
09:53So I personally don't think that anybody would get so desperate as to trade for Brandon Iuke,
10:00but the 49ers don't have to, to, to cut him yet.
10:05And so whether Washington signs digs or not, I don't think that that changes the 49ers mindset.
10:11I think the 49ers mindset is you really, you know, screwed us.
10:19You really kind of did something that's borderline unprecedented so much.
10:24So we were able to avoid 30 to $40 million in guaranteed, you know, contract money.
10:32And we don't feel like we should do you any favors.
10:35More importantly, we don't feel like we should give a competitor, you know, especially if the
10:40teams in the NFC, a chance to have you for a complete training camp so that you can adjust
10:46to your new squad.
10:48We'll turn you loose and you can, you know, on August 31st, and you can take six, seven
10:55weeks to get adjusted to your new team or however long it would take.
11:00301-230-0980.
11:03301-230-0980.
11:06You have to choose one or the other, digs or iuk.
11:12This isn't a neither and this isn't a both.
11:16You get one or the other, which would you take?
11:20Again, the difference is timelines.
11:23The difference is age.
11:24The difference is upside.
11:26The difference is fit.
11:28There's a lot of differences between the two, but you only get one.
11:32Who would you pick?
