00:02Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at details that only real Nintendo fans will pick up on in the
00:08Super Mario Galaxy movie.
00:10Beware, unless you want every easter egg spoiled.
00:18It's Hammer Time!
00:19The Super Mario Galaxy movie borrows more than a few musical cues from the games, but the standout comes before
00:25the film itself even begins.
00:32As the Illumination logo pops up, the Minions find themselves getting into their usual shenanigans.
00:38Instead of gearing up for a kart race like in the previous film, the Minions cause mayhem set to a
00:43familiar tune.
00:44It's Yukio Kanioka's Hammer BGM theme from the original Donkey Kong game.
00:56This music could be heard whenever Mario, then known as Jumpman, picked up a hammer, which he used to smash
01:03barrels in his way.
01:04Super Smash Bros. fans will know the theme better from the Hammer Weapon.
01:08It's an item that always has opponents running while you become practically unstoppable.
01:18Peach's Note to Mario
01:19As Peach sets out with Toad to find Rosalina, she leaves a note behind for Mario and company.
01:25Reading the message, we get an homage to the opening of Super Mario 64.
01:29That 30-year-old adventure commenced with Peach's narration, inviting Mario over to her castle for cake.
01:35Dear Mario, he's come to the castle. I have baked a cake for me.
01:39Of course, he had to jump through a few hoops before getting a slice.
01:43Thank you so much for playing my game.
01:46In the English version of Mario 64, Peach's voiceover was provided by Leslie Swan, the former senior editor of Nintendo
01:53Power.
01:54The Super Mario Galaxy movie recreates the opening of that game with Peach's face alongside the note.
01:59There's no mention of a cake this time.
02:01Although Peach left in such a hurry, we imagine there was no time to bake one.
02:06Toad, pack our things.
02:07Inverted Pyramid
02:09Catching up with Mario and Luigi, we find the brothers on a plumbing job in the middle of the desert,
02:14where there's an upside-down pyramid.
02:18You gotta love the logic of this universe.
02:20The Inverted Pyramid is a landmark from the Sand Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey.
02:24Mario and Luigi arrive on motorbikes, similar to the ones that have been customary since Mario Kart Wii.
02:36They're greeted by the Tostorinans, whose skeletal appearances and celebration of Mexican culture draw inspiration from Dia de Muertos.
02:46Investigating the plumbing problem, the brothers pick up a new pal in Yoshi.
02:50Since they only brought two bikes, though, Luigi has to double-dash it with the green dino.
03:00Issa Rae makes a voiceover cameo as the Honey Queen, a giant bee who isn't all that pleased that our
03:06heroes drove their castle through her fields.
03:09Bowser offers to do jail time on behalf of the others, but he isn't chained up for long.
03:13Don't move, I'll be right up!
03:15The Honey Queen made her debut in the original Super Mario Galaxy, and would resurface in the 2010 sequel.
03:25Appearing in the Honey Hive Galaxy and Honey Hop Galaxy, this queen bee is an ally in both games.
03:31Sadly, Mario and Luigi don't stick around long enough in the movie to don their bee suits.
03:36We guess there was a shortage of bee mushrooms.
03:47Mario Maker
03:48Wrapping up another adventure, Peach is ready to return to her castle in the Mushroom Kingdom.
03:54Mario and Luigi neglected to tell her, though, that the castle kinda got destroyed in her absence.
03:59It's nothing they can't rebuild from the ground up, however.
04:02Rosalina conjures a construction hat right out of Super Mario Maker,
04:06which allowed players to create their own levels in the style of various Mario games.
04:11In this film, the montage is executed with 16-bit graphics right out of Super Mario World.
04:17The setup is also similar to the story mode of Super Mario Maker 2,
04:21in which the castle is erased from existence, and Mario must raise the funds to construct another.
04:34Donkey Kong cameo
04:35Despite playing a significant role in the previous film, the Kongs are mostly absent from the Mario Galaxy movie.
04:41Maybe that's because this movie was already pretty crowded, and a Kong spinoff is inevitable anyway.
04:47Is this what you came for?
04:49I love you, D.K.
04:50At least we got a brief Donkey Kong cameo as the newly-hatched Yoshi roams through Brooklyn.
04:56During this montage, Yoshi encounters D.K. at a construction site,
05:00disturbing the piece just like he did in the 1981 arcade classic.
05:04He thankfully hasn't kidnapped Pauline, although considering that she's the mayor,
05:08D.K. is still causing a ruckus in her city.
05:11If only Mario were around to subdue the gorilla.
05:13We suppose they could always call this guy.
05:16Wahoo!
05:17He seems to have jumping experience.
05:19Power-Ups
05:20Mushrooms and fire flowers were only the beginning.
05:24Yes!
05:25Fire!
05:27The Mario Galaxy movie breaks out a few power-ups that deserve a lot more love.
05:32Namely, the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3.
05:35We had to wait until a Mario Mario 2 update for that fan-favorite power-up to make a comeback.
05:40Of course, the Frog Suit shares a few similarities with the Penguin Suit,
05:44which first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and resurfaces here.
05:48During the film's climax, our heroes break open some question blocks, with each getting a different power-up.
05:54The titular plumber chooses the drill hat from Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
05:58Meanwhile, Luigi picks the cloud power-up while Yoshi is inflated into a blimp,
06:02just like in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
06:13Galaxies.
06:14We may not get to see all of the galaxies from the games, but the film covers quite a few.
06:19There's a huge universe out there.
06:21Wow.
06:22Wow!
06:26We have a lot of galaxies.
06:29Among them is Gateway Galaxy, the first major locale we venture to in the 2007 game that inspired this film.
06:35The movie expands upon Gateway Galaxy, turning it into a hub world with numerous species of characters in transit,
06:41from the piantas we first saw in Mario Sunshine, to star bunnies in the Mario Galaxy games.
06:46Peach and Toad briefly soar past Drip Drop Galaxy.
06:50When the two make their way towards Homeworld, they pass by a building with the N64 logo.
06:55Then, there's the final level on the planet that Bowser Jr. has constructed for his father.
06:59The ultimate Koopa lair.
07:01I demand that you release my father.
07:04Over my dead body.
07:06Bowser's bedtime story.
07:08When he isn't ditching his son to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnap Peach,
07:12Bowser can be a surprisingly affectionate father.
07:14Fine with me.
07:16In a flashback before he shipped Junior off to boarding school,
07:19Bowser tells his offspring a bedtime story, complete with puppets.
07:23The handcrafted backdrops and props that Bowser employs share an aesthetic similar to the ones in Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's
07:29Story,
07:29which had a more kid-friendly tone.
07:35Both notably feature Baby Bowser as an antagonist.
07:38Bowser's puppet theater is also reminiscent of the Paper Mario games,
07:42which have a visual style that's best described as a pop-up book meets a stage play.
07:47We just wish Bowser sang his son a lullaby,
07:50although Peaches is probably the only song he knows.
07:52Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches,
07:58Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
08:02Shortly after arriving at Gateway Galaxy, Toad and Peach take pity on a lost monkey,
08:07who fans will recognize as a uquiki.
08:10Although these monkeys originated from Yoshi's Island,
08:13they're best remembered for their presence in the Tall Tall Mountain level from Mario 64.
08:17one of these monkeys would infamously steal mario's hat either requiring a player to catch
08:22the little thief or go the rest of the game capless that said toad comes to regret helping
08:28ukiki who snatches his backpack at least ukiki doesn't take toad's mushroom especially since
08:33there's still some confusion over whether that's a hat or part of his head casino characters
08:42looking for easter eggs then the casino scene is a jackpot this locale serves as a hangout for wart
08:49a sleazy frog who wears a crown despite apparently not being the king of anything
08:53oh princess you're going to regret that he is the leader of the 8-bit gang however among the members
09:01of wart's crew are birdo and mouser all three of these characters were never meant to be part of
09:06the mario universe initially they were conceived for a japan exclusive game called doki doki panic
09:12when the actual super mario brothers 2 was deemed too difficult for westerners though
09:17doki doki got a mushroom makeover
09:25in the mario galaxy movie peach uses her trusty umbrella against mouser birdo wart and the ninjis
09:31who were also foes in doki doki panic pikmin heading to the flight deck peach and toad seek
09:37out a pilot who can take them to rosalina they encounter what appears to be a massive
09:42rocket ship perception is everything however zooming out we find that the ship is actually
09:47tiny and its occupants are even smaller plant-like creatures known as pikmin
09:56although their ship resembles the ss dolphin captain olimar is nowhere to be found in a way
10:02he's there in spirit as it's been said that olimar's name is an anagram for mario with an l added
10:07olimar also has a partner named louie whose name is suspiciously close to luigi
10:12come on you're not the scared guy anymore
10:18nintendo super scope the super scope light gun was compatible with several super nintendo games
10:23including yoshi's safari so it's only fitting that yoshi gets to arm himself with the super scope
10:28which is blue in the film to further distinguish it from a real gun
10:33the super scope also serves a different purpose in the film being used to de-age mario luigi and
10:39toad the green dino thus finds himself playing babysitter much like he did in yoshi's island
10:44thankfully the super scope comes in handy when yoshi encounters the t-rex from mario odyssey
10:49shrinking the realistically rendered beast down is it just us or does the de-aged t-rex look like the
10:55version of yoshi from the live-action mario movie bowser jr's security system the character models in
11:01the film may be closer to their 3d game counterparts but there are several nods to mario's pixelated
11:07roots at peach's birthday party there's a piñata modeled after the og king koopa in 1985 super mario
11:13brothers
11:19later when the heroes arrive at the bowser planet jr shows his father the state-of-the-art
11:24security system that he's set up the bowser name shall be feared once more
11:33mario and peach find themselves running through an obstacle course of moving platforms and lava
11:38which is standard for any final level through bowser jr's security screen though mario peach
11:44and their environment are presented in 16-bit fashion it all boils down to a confrontation
11:49against bowser armed with an axe on a bridge again going back to the classics
12:02ruined dragon bowser jr made his debut in super mario sunshine armed with a magic paintbrush that
12:08allows him to change his appearance leave my mom alone you bad man he can also use the brush to
12:15conjure inky enemies for mario to battle although this backfires on jr during the climax of the
12:20mario galaxy movie bowser jr summons the ruined dragon from super mario odyssey
12:27this intimidating purple beast caught many players off guard with its detailed design
12:32standing out from the cartoonier aesthetic we're used to in the mario games
12:35the ruined dragon's presence is equally jarring here showing bowser and his son what a real giant
12:41reptilian monster looks like playing with rob at gateway galaxy the characters seek directions
12:47from the definitive 80s robot rob or robotic operating buddy was an accessory for the nintendo
12:53entertainment system what's it like to play the nintendo entertainment system
13:00while playing with a robotic companion sounds fun rob was only compatible with two games
13:05gyromite and stack up both were virtually unplayable due in part to rob's slow maneuvering
13:11assuming you got him to move at all
13:16rob is just as aggravating in this film taking his time to point our heroes in the right direction
13:21despite his notorious origins rob would find a second life through the super smash bros series
13:27now he's a movie star voiced by the film's head of story ed scudder
13:31versus mr game and watch looking to fight fire with fire luigi tries to paint a character that
13:37can combat the bowser family the best he can do is a 2d stick figure like man whose design is
13:43as
13:43limited as his animation mr game and watch packs some more powerful punch than you would think
13:47especially when he breaks out the hammer
13:56a new generation was introduced to mr game and watch when he was made a playable character in super
14:01smash bros melee he's been a fan favorite fighter ever since mr game and watch's history traces back even
14:07further than mario's though first appearing in the 1980 game ball he's as retro as they come
14:12but there's no school like old school in our book
14:20princess daisy luigi asks mario to ask peach if she has a friend for him
14:25they'll be able to go on a double date soon enough in a post-credits scene yukiki tries to
14:30pull another theft at gateway galaxy he once again messes with the wrong princess but it isn't peach
14:36this time daisy traces back to 1989 super mario land on the game boy
14:51she's also technically made it to the big screen before being played by samantha mathis in the 93
14:56mario movie as much as some like to pretend that film doesn't exist it was among the earlier instances
15:02of daisy and luigi being depicted as an item come on daisy you know how i feel about you right
15:09i want to be with you the pairing became more common when daisy made an overdue return in 2000's mario
15:16tennis
15:23fox throws shade at slippy glenn powell goes from piloting a plane in top gun maverick to flying an
15:29r-wing as fox mcleod in mario galaxy hey hangman you look good i am good rooster i'm very good
15:36running into peach and toad at the flight deck fox recounts how he ended up there
15:40in a slick 2d sequence reminiscent of an anime fox recounts flying alongside his crew slippy toad peppy
15:47hare and falco lombardi
15:57although nobody can do a barrel roll like fox he finds himself stranded fox suspects he wouldn't be
16:03in this predicament if only a certain toad weren't his mechanic if you grew up playing star fox 64
16:08you know that slippy exists simply to burden you from his high-pitched voice to constantly needing to
16:14be rescued we're glad the filmmakers share our frustration with slippy how's the arwing doing fox
16:21let's take it to him peach and rosalina's connection when princess rosalina made her 2007
16:28debut in the mario galaxy game players couldn't help but notice her resemblance to princess peach
16:39this isn't a mere coincidence as the developers considered having peach and rosalina be related to
16:44one another the idea didn't make it into the finished game however while rosalina has continued
16:50to appear in various mario titles her connection to peach has never been officially canonized
16:55until now in the super mario galaxy movie peach at last learns her origins rosalina is her older
17:03sister princess rosalina you're coming with me when danger came to their world rosalina sent peach
17:12to the mushroom kingdom where she became toad's princess it's taken almost 20 years but this
17:17long-standing fan theory is finally confirmed as true okay were there any other details we missed
17:24let us know in the comments
