In 1920, six-year-old Nancy Bentley was bitten by a snake in Tasmania and needed urgent medical treatment.
Her father took her to HMAS Sydney, but Navy regulations prevented civilians from being treated aboard the warship. The commanding officer solved the problem by formally enlisting Nancy as a Navy mascot.
She served for just eight days—but made Australian naval history as the first female enlisted member of the Royal Australian Navy.
