In 1999, Joan Murray survived an almost unimaginable skydiving accident.
She jumped from approximately 14,500 feet, but her main parachute failed. Her reserve parachute also became ineffective near the ground, leaving her falling at tremendous speed.
Joan crashed into a mound of fire ants and suffered hundreds of stings along with devastating injuries. She spent weeks recovering and eventually survived the accident.
Some accounts have suggested that the ant stings and resulting adrenaline response may have helped her survive, but this explanation is not medically proven.
Her story remains one of the most extraordinary survival stories in skydiving history.
