On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor came under attack.
At nearby Hickam Field, First Lieutenant Annie G. Fox was serving as chief nurse. As bombs exploded and wounded soldiers flooded the hospital, Fox organized the nurses, assisted with treatment, administered anesthesia and continued working under intense bombardment.
Her extraordinary courage earned her the Purple Heart, making her the first woman to receive the award for combat service. When the rules for the Purple Heart later changed, her award was replaced with a Bronze Star.
This is the remarkable story of Annie G. Fox—a nurse whose calm leadership became part of Pearl Harbor history.
