00:04Welcome back. The northeastern Indian state of Assam continues to suffer from
00:09floods that so far have killed nearly 100 people. According to officials the
00:13disaster has affected nearly 170,000 residents who have seen their villages
00:19submerged on the floodwaters. Thus far thousands of people have moved to
00:26temporary shelters after rivers overflowed and around 14,000 hectares of
00:31farmland are submerged across affected areas. Villagers have also reported damaged
00:37homes, uprooted trees and vehicles buried under mud. India's Health Minister JP
00:43Nada visited the affected region and described the destruction as extensive
00:48also stating that restoring normal conditions will require significant time
00:53and effort. From the month of June up to September flooding is common in Assam
00:59because of monsoon season. Later experts have linked increasing flood severity to
01:04climate change and unplanned development.
