Did the Lions make the right move extending Jahmyr Gibbs and making him the highest paid RB?
Transcript
00:00get to the phones good deal bad deal gibbs got paid nfl record three-year extension just north
00:05of 75 million with incentives ken and howell you're on 97.1 hey good morning gentlemen and
00:12go blue go blue i um this is more of an observation and this is more of a um just
00:20an overview of the
00:21position that we're in detroit has the best fans in the world there's no question we're very
00:27supportive of our teams but we don't have the market that the coasts have the florida with the
00:33income tax uh deal where there's no income tax um california new york so we're going to have to
00:41get used to and hopefully our general managers start understanding that we're going to have to
00:45pay more to players to make it an incentive for them to play in detroit i mean the red wings
00:51of
00:52the 90s were an anomaly where people were taking a pay cut just to play on a stanley cup contender
00:59and we're not there yet so um until then we're definitely going to um have to get used to paying
01:07more to keep uh players uh interested in staying in detroit can i get what you're saying because we
01:13talk about drawing free agents in all sports but i don't think detroit had to pay a detroit tax here
01:18they just paid him what the next running back would get paid you know i'm not saying the detroit
01:24tax i'm just saying the overall market right so i mean florida does have that plus they have a good
01:31market but i'm also talking about the east and west coast yeah no i get what you're saying about
01:36desirable places to play from a lifestyle standpoint i get his point but i don't think that factored into
01:43this at all i don't think you if you're like put yourself in gibbs shoes it's like well if the
01:48lions
01:48don't overpay me i'm eventually going to end up playing in california or or i guess that's a bad
01:54example with the taxes i'm going to end up playing for the dolphins or the jaguars i don't really think
01:57that was part of this at all i think detroit did what you do your guys up you pay him
02:02more than the
02:02last guy yeah it's it they let bijon set the market and then jonathan taylor followed and now it's
02:11jameer gibbs and i don't even think that's someone might hear that and go well they let atlanta go
02:17first and it raised the price we're not talking about some astronomical gap between the two guys here
02:24you know waiting an extra week didn't cost this team significant money they had to pay him a little
02:30more yeah doesn't matter i i agree i i don't we're talking pennies on the dollar when you're
02:38talking about the total number of dollars compared to the other two guys that just signed this week
02:44pennies on the dollar two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven a running back can win
02:49the mvp c 2005 2006 2012 a wide receiver cannot why are running backs paid less than receivers they're
02:57arguably more important i think that you feel better about the the the survival yeah the career
03:05he's going to play out more of that contract on average but that's not a gimme like i gave you
03:12running backs into their 30s that were you know top 10 rushers a year right but those are the outliers
03:16because the extreme outliers when you're talking derrick henry even saquon at this point like they're
03:21outliers christian mccaffrey an outlier for every one of those guys there's 10 other running backs
03:2720 other running backs that only play three four years or maybe they have productive five six years
03:33but i'm saying that's why receivers make more than running backs but i wonder if it's swung too far
03:39to where like jsn just got paid this last offseason he's north of 40 right is he worth twice what
03:46jameer
03:47gibbs is worth to a football team even factoring in injury risk and shorter career no that seems
03:53it seems disproportionate bizarre but it all depends on what it means for your offense
03:59what it means for to have for sam darnold if he's going to be there continue to be their quarterback
04:06moving forward how important is it for him his success the success of the team to have jsn out
04:13there at receiver oh it's critical i mean he's by far their number one target oh there's yeah
04:16let's get to chuck in farmington chuck good morning hey guys it's kind of just the market i mean
04:22it's always i mean when we did brown's contract it seems huge and now i look where that contract is
04:29i think the salary cap first is messed up they should keep the quarterback position out of the salary cap
04:34because it's such a wild take from being on a rookie deal to the to the big deal but i
04:40mean he set the
04:41market they decided they're going to spend on their players and running back was a discounted
04:46position until we took gibbs now you look at the first round picks that are being put on there and
04:52this is in line with taylor and there and i'm just glad it's not six years for a hundred and
04:56105 million
04:57i mean you just gotta you gotta keep the running back extensions shorter so yeah john do you have
05:03do you have his guaranteed money i don't know if that had been gibbs yeah yeah gibbs's guaranteed money
05:08is includes 51 and a half million guaranteed okay and the deal is 75 well up to 75 plus the
05:18five this
05:19year and 14 next year so call it 95 total and 51 is guaranteed yes and how they move that
05:25is up to
05:26them that doesn't sound that bad like by the time you get to his fourth and fifth year of this
05:32deal
05:32if the guarantees have already been exhausted you can get out from under it you know what i'm saying
05:37you can get out from under it or you can go the route that indianapolis did which out of the
05:41taylor
05:41and add two more years sure and then it's a matter of okay what's the price tag at that point
05:46and what
05:46does it do to the cap and are you able to push some of that money down the road even
05:50further uh and and
05:53we talked about voidable years when we were talking about some of the defensive backs that they had
05:57signed over the last couple of years you have those voidable years eventually the cost always ends up
06:01coming due but you can now manipulate it much easier to be able to fit under the cap to be
06:07able
06:07to sign other guys because you have the freedom of manipulation edward in detroit you're on 97 one
06:14good morning guys you know i've been you know just my you know sitting in my little bubble thinking
06:21about conspiracy theories and how important i believe gives it to this organization and i've thought for
06:27days that it was vital to them to keep him has been not only sign him but also make him
06:33the highest
06:33paid running back in the league it seems like reflecting back on my sports watching teams took
06:41pride in signing their guys first setting the mark this is what we want to do we're going to make
06:49you
06:49our guy and then we move on unless i'm missing something unless i'm just being entirely unfair
06:55it seems that the lions actively waited to see what others were going to do and then comes along and
07:03gives gives us a deal that's 75 000 more than the highest paid guy and i'm just wondering does that
07:10mean
07:10anything to you should teams be reactive to what other teams are doing or should you be proactive
07:17set your mark and move forward in general if it's a player that you are sold on you want to
07:22be
07:22proactive and the lions largely have i just don't know who was responsible for the gap you know i'm
07:29saying john like if gibbs camp wanted 80 million and brad was holding firm and now got the market
07:35comparables he actually saved money by waiting i just don't know yeah and the flip side could also
07:39be true the lions could have been saying we're going to pay you 65 and gibbs camp was refusing to
07:44sign
07:44until they saw beach i just don't know who was who had their feet dug in more because that matters
07:50it's irrelevant yeah well at this point it is yeah it is absolutely irrelevant as to whether hey it was
07:56gibbs holding things up it was brad holmes holding things up the market was set that they went market
