00:00You are full of drama today.
00:02You found something in one of your kids' rooms.
00:06We'll get to that at 835.
00:08Yeah, something has been exposed.
00:11Exposed. That's 835. Uh-oh.
00:12And you're also hearing about some potential drama with Lions training camp.
00:16Yeah. A little bit of the inside scuttle is that there is a chance
00:21that Jameer Gibbs is looking at running back deals,
00:26the contracts that the Lions have handed out,
00:28when they've handed him out and says,
00:30I'm next in line, and if I don't get my contract before camp,
00:35I may be a hold in or hold out, however you want to talk about,
00:40not practicing until he gets a new deal.
00:44And, I mean, I understand where he's coming from.
00:47I also understand where the Lions are coming from
00:49in regards to possibly waiting it out,
00:53see what he looks like after a year of being the bell cow,
00:56but they've made that comment.
00:57They got rid of David Montgomery.
00:59They need him now more than ever for the success of this season,
01:04especially with a revamped offensive line, new play caller.
01:09They need Jameer Gibbs more now than they ever have before,
01:14and he does have increased leverage in regards to demanding a new contract.
01:21You're our very own Adam Schefter here.
01:23Potential holdout.
01:25Sources tell John Jansen.
01:27Because I haven't seen this anywhere.
01:28This isn't surprising, though.
01:30No, it's not.
01:31And so I texted you guys that yesterday,
01:32and you're like, are you willing to say that?
01:34I'm like, well, I don't think it's necessarily groundbreaking news,
01:38other than I have heard it from sources close to the team,
01:47where I don't think anybody would be surprised if he missed a couple of days.
01:51And I know you are of the mindset that, hey, it's okay.
01:55Put him in bubble wrap.
01:56Just don't let him play until the first game.
01:58So I don't bat an eye at this.
02:00In fact, I thought they were going to already have the deal done
02:02because that's who they are.
02:03I'm pleasantly surprised that they may be drawing a line in the sand going,
02:07well, hold on.
02:08You're about to be a bell cow.
02:09You might have a 400-touch season.
02:11We want to make sure that the engine still runs.
02:14We want to make sure that the tires still have air in them.
02:17We want to see how you hold up.
02:19We got two years left, this year and the fifth-year option,
02:22that we are already owed to you.
02:27If they drew the line in the sand of, hey, we're not paying him this year,
02:31I think that would be wise.
02:32See how he holds up.
02:34And if Jameer's response is, well, I'm not going to take unnecessary risks
02:38in the preseason, to that I say, cool, I'm on the same side as you are.
02:42I don't want you taking unnecessary bumps and bruises in the preseason.
02:46Bubble wrap him and have him ready to go for the Saints.
02:48Right, but what are the dynamics involved in having a guy hold out
02:52where you do have a new play caller?
02:55You've got Cade Mays up front, who's going to go to dinner with me,
02:58with Penny Sewell and Blake Miller, and Blake Miller himself.
03:03You've got new components up front, and blocking four different running backs,
03:08there's a different way that you do it.
03:10You get a feel for, hey, when a play is called to go, it's 24, right?
03:15It's an easy one, the tailback into the four-hole.
03:19Well, what does that mean for Jameer Gibbs?
03:21Because it would have been different for David Montgomery.
03:23Now he's no longer here, which, again, makes it that much more important
03:27to figure out what that means.
03:29How does he approach that?
03:30How does Jameer Gibbs see it?
03:32And then how does that affect what I'm doing up front?
03:35How does the defense react when it's him in the backfield?
03:37Can you give me an example?
03:38Like, when you played, like, I got to block this differently
03:41for this back versus this back.
03:43What does that actually look like?
03:44Sure.
03:44Like, when I was blocking for Steven Davis,
03:47he was a guy that loved to keep all his runs frontside.
03:50Now, he would cut it back.
03:51It was all determined by what the defense did,
03:53but he had a propensity to keep things more frontside,
03:56which meant I had to make sure that I got better movement
03:59if it was coming right behind me.
04:01If it was Clinton Portis, he liked to cut things back.
04:05That's, you know, he was more, like, when he was with, you know,
04:08the Broncos.
04:09It was more stretched to the frontside and then cut back.
04:12So then, instead of getting more movement up front,
04:15I would bait my defender into, hey, I want to get him to overplay
04:20to the frontside.
04:21I'd wheel him, and then all of a sudden, hey,
04:23Clinton Portis cuts in behind me or my guard
04:26or even back behind the center and left guard.
04:29So your technique is dependent on which back is in the game.
04:32It can be.
04:33That's one factor.
04:34It's not the determining factor.
04:36Most of what the factor is is where the defense is lined up.
04:39I'm not going to try and stretch a guy that's a four-eye,
04:40which means he's inside.
04:41So, you know, and your running backs are going to see that as well.
04:45But, again, it's how am I going to handle that four-eye?
04:49And it may just be more, it's Jameer Gibbs trying to get a comfort level
04:55for how is Blake Miller going to block this play?
04:58Right, because there is some reshuffling.
05:00Sewell is playing left.
05:02Miller is new at right.
05:03Mays is new at center.
05:04Yeah.
05:05And what type of calls am I getting from Cade Mays?
05:09How is that communication?
05:10All of those things.
05:11And it goes to pass protection.
05:13Like, what are the strengths and weaknesses?
05:15Where are guys coming free?
05:17What are the odds that I'm going to have to help out?
05:19You know, my responsibility may be to help out Blake Miller,
05:22but, hey, he's got this guy locked up,
05:23so I'm going to go inside to Tate Rattledge.
05:25You know, and just if you can anticipate those things quicker,
05:29it helps the entire offense run a little bit more productive.
05:34I guess what I'm saying, though, is if we start, quote,
05:36a little rusty in the run game, it's still a team I think should win a dozen games.
05:40They'll be hitting their stride come playoff time.
05:43I don't need Gibbs rolling an ankle in the preseason anyway.
05:46If he wants to hold out a practice, training camp even,
05:49it doesn't bother me at all.
05:50It doesn't concern me at all.
05:52Right, but how far does it go?
05:53How far is he willing to stretch this holdout?
05:57And then what does that do to the relationship between Jameer Gibbs and Brad Holmes?
06:05And the thought of wanting to be able to get something done,
06:07whether it's in the season, it's after the season, going into his fifth year,
06:11is Jameer Gibbs now thinking, well, they're just going to use me and tag me?
06:17Right, because they could really have him for three more years
06:20without making a long-term commitment if they want.
06:22I mean, they could play out the final year of his rookie deal.
06:25His fifth-year option has already been picked up.
06:27And if they still haven't come to terms, they could tag him,
06:30which is a one-year risk.
06:31It's not signing a guy to a four- or five-year deal.
06:34How much of this, too, is the B. John Gibbs staring contest?
06:38I want to make more than him, so I'm going to wait it out.
06:41I know there's been a little bit of that going on.
06:44I don't believe that's a factor at all.
06:48It's running backs want to get guaranteed money.
06:52And for Gibbs to think, well, I'm going to wait for B. John.
06:56I've got this great deal in front of me, but I'm going to wait for B. John
06:59because I want to add another million to it,
07:01or I want to add another half a million to it.
07:03You're talking about big numbers, but in the context of the contract,
07:07it's more about how many years are guaranteed,
07:10how much money am I going to get before I turn age 30.
07:15How do you guys feel about a potential holdout from Jameer Gibbs?
07:182-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
07:21The Lions typically take care of their guys early,
07:24and their philosophy has been we actually save money in the long run doing it
07:28because these guys are really good, and if they stack more seasons
07:31and the cap goes up, we pay more.
07:34They are typically proactive.
07:37It's worth pointing out they haven't done it with Branch or Laporta,
07:40some injury questions there.
07:42They did it with Jack Campbell.
07:44Gibbs is the one that is healthy that we thought would be next
07:47and as of today has not been extended.
07:49Right, so they did it with Jack Campbell.
07:50He was just the latest.
07:51They've done it with Amon Ross St. Brown,
07:53Lee McNeil, Aiden Hutchinson, Penny Sewell.
07:56You go down the list of guys, and they've gotten all of them done early,
08:02and the fact that they have this reserve that Jared Goff redid his contract
08:09and they still have space under the cap to make it possible.
08:13One other distinction, I guess, as I'm thinking through it,
08:15Jack Campbell technically only had one year left on his deal
08:18because they did not pick up the fifth.
08:20The fact that they picked up the fifth and it's just good cap math
08:24gives them the flexibility to wait if they choose to.
08:27Right, and it was the same with Amon Ross, A. Brown, right,
08:29going into the last year of his contract, but with Penny Sewell,
08:32it was a year, or they had two years left on the deal.
08:36And they rolled it in.
08:36Same with Hutch.
08:36Now it was in the season, but...
08:38And I think the running back position is just different.
08:40I mean, that's just the difference in all of this.
08:42You feel like, hey, a tackle could play a dozen years, right?
08:46I mean, an edge player, even with a busted up leg,
08:49we think is going to end up playing a decade plus.
08:51Running backs?
08:53You just don't know.
08:54When you start making five-year commitments
08:55or four or five-year commitments
08:56or you start guaranteeing $75, $80 million to guys,
08:59you get concerned.
09:01Not that I think...
09:02Well, that concern is on both sides.
09:03Well, if I'm not going to have the 10 years, 12 years,
09:07then I want to get paid now.
09:09Which is what leads to potential holdouts.
09:13Hold-ins.
09:13Or hold-ins.
09:14And a small version of this with Anzalone.
09:17There's a lot more money at stake with Gibbs.
09:19Tom, when you hear this, what's your read?
09:22I let him hold out.
09:24It really doesn't bother me at all.
09:26I get him taking his stance and he wants to get paid now.
09:29The question is, does he pull a Chris Jones
09:31and take this into week one?
09:33Into season, right.
09:34You know, that's where it changes a little bit
09:36because all of a sudden you got Pacheco and...
09:38That's your lead back.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Is he willing to do that with two years remaining on his contract?
09:43Usually you see it with one year remaining.
09:46I'm not extending him.
09:48I think it is such poor business to extend a running back
09:52two years in advance.
09:53Yep.
09:54At that kind of money.
09:55You know, somebody texted in and they compared it to Kirby Joseph.
09:57Oh, you're going to pay him but not Gibbs.
10:00You're not looking at all the facts.
10:02Joseph's contract is very friendly to the Lions.
10:05He's also not paying him that kind of money either.
10:08Right.
10:09I just think...
10:10And Joseph didn't have a fifth-year option
10:11that you could use as an additional, you know, you could wait.
10:15And right after John broke this news...
10:18Insider.
10:18You used the term bell cow.
10:20Yeah, that's what Campbell said.
10:22I want to see what he looks like without David Montgomery.
10:25If he touches it 400 times this season,
10:28which I think is on the table.
10:29I mean, he plays two-thirds of the snaps
10:31when Montgomery was here last year.
10:33If he's playing 70% of the snaps
10:36and he carries it and catches it
10:38to the tune of almost 400 touches,
10:40I want to see how he holds up
10:42before I hand him $80 million
10:43and guarantees.
10:45In the world of just equal fairness
10:47and not reading into anything other than that,
10:49there's no reason why he shouldn't be treated
10:51just like St. Brown was.
10:53But it's the position.
10:55That's the difference.
10:56That's what you've got to realize.
10:57No, and let's draw the distinction here.
10:58He's as dynamic a player.
11:00I think he's going to have a huge season.
11:02And that might be the trade-off.
11:03He goes out and puts together
11:05a 2,000 all-purpose season
11:07and says, back up the Brinks truck.
11:09Because now I am in the last year of my deal.
11:12I just, you know,
11:15this thing should be taken to the tag.
11:18It's the right way to do things.
11:20It's not nice.
11:21It's mean.
11:22It's cutthroat.
11:23It's not doing to Jameer Gibbs
11:25what you've done to all the other guys.
11:27But it's a smart thing to do.
11:29Yeah.
11:29Are the Lions willing to use the tag?
11:33If you're not,
11:34you're not functioning like every other NFL team.
11:36When's the last time they used the franchise tag?
11:37I couldn't tell you.
11:40But do you want to get to
11:42the franchise tag?
11:45And let's just,
11:46let's play it out.
11:47I understand the risk on both sides.
11:50Where, hey,
11:51we take it through this year.
11:52You've got the fifth year option.
11:53You've got the year of the franchise tag.
11:56And now all of a sudden,
11:58if he is still all world,
12:01now you're not looking at
12:02just extending him for another year
12:04because you're not going to put the tag on him
12:05for a second time.
12:06You can,
12:07but you're not going to.
12:09Are you then extending him for three years?
12:12What Tom's saying is
12:14you could give him 1,200 touches
12:16and then let his body
12:17do what it's going to do.
12:20I mean,
12:20didn't the Vikings run it all the way
12:23to the end with Delvin Cook?
12:24Yeah.
12:25I think it's a similar situation.
12:26Like a similar type of running back.
12:29My opinion is that
12:30running backs like him
12:31don't age as well.
12:32The quick twitch?
12:34Yeah.
12:34Because,
12:35boy,
12:35he can be a blur in the open field.
12:37Right, yeah, sure.
12:38The 0 to 60.
12:39What happens if he's,
12:40you know,
12:400 to 50?
12:41You start getting some mechanical issues.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Last time the Lions used
12:45a franchise tag was
12:47Ziggy Ansah.
12:492018.
12:50I mean,
12:51Tom,
12:51I...
12:52Great,
12:52I picked the Bob Quinn's decision
12:54as a circle.
12:55but I think you...
12:56That's your standard!
12:57But I think you were going somewhere.
12:59You're going to wear
12:59the villain hoodie.
13:00Yeah.
13:01A villainous way
13:02to conduct business
13:02would be,
13:03hey man,
13:04you got two years
13:04under contract right now.
13:06We'll see you in camp.
13:08We'll see you on Sundays.
13:11The villainous way
13:12to run this
13:13is,
13:15buddy,
13:15we're not extending you right now.
13:16Not this offseason.
13:18We'll revisit it later.
13:20And I guess to this point
13:21they haven't done it,
13:22so we'll see.
13:22248-539-9797.
13:25Call's coming in.
13:25Text to read.
13:26And then, yeah,
13:27what did John find
13:28in one of his kids' rooms?
13:30835-97-1.
