00:01okay gator you had this in your your show prep sheet that you sent out
00:05warren sap did you hear this or read it somewhere i saw it on twitter yesterday okay and i bookmarked
00:14it um it was from nfl rumors uh but it's a story says pro football hall of fame warren sap
00:22says
00:22parents should consider keeping their children out of tackle football until high school because
00:28of concerns about repeated head impacts during brain development he said quote high school we're
00:33going to do baseball basketball tennis critical thinking chess swimming we're going to do
00:38everything that does not hit their head sap encouraged their young athletes to participate
00:43in other sports and educational activities before beginning tackle football arguing the childhood
00:48should be used to develop their minds and explore different in interests this is via vlad tv whatever
00:55that is okay i don't know that he's wrong but i don't know that he's realistic either
01:07sports parents
01:11get rather enthusiastic about their kids sports careers
01:17really it's one way to put it okay yeah that is a way to put it
01:20if there was a rule that tackle football started in ninth grade and all kids played some form of flag
01:29football leading up to that with that and a rule that was enforceable but there's so many football
01:36programs that are not affiliated with schools right you right you don't you don't play necessarily
01:43i don't know how this could be instituted it it's like i love that there is far more concern for
01:53the
01:53health and well-being of the athletes there should be it's we're not we're not barbaric here right i
02:00mean we love our football and it is a violent sport and injuries are going to happen but when it
02:04comes to
02:05long-term life-altering injuries that can be suffered at a young age i do think it's it's important to
02:11pay
02:11attention to the science if there was a rule that everybody had the same starting line then i think
02:18this is something that that might make some sense the problem is i just don't see it enforceable that
02:23there could be the same starting line for everybody yeah i would ask the question does warren sap regret
02:29starting playing tackle football whenever he did because i'm guessing he didn't start as a ninth grader
02:33i'm guessing he was playing tackle football much earlier yep in my when i was growing up tackle
02:39football wasn't available until i was in i think sixth grade sixth or seventh grade um so that was
02:47different the arguments i would make uh against what he is saying is because if you start in high
02:54school you're starting too late in my opinion i think there are ways that you can make it safer for
02:59sure for younger kids where you treat it like kind of like they do in the nfl now in training
03:04camp you
03:05don't have many padded practices but what needs to be emphasized is the right way of doing things
03:11and i remember vividly uh when i first started playing football when one player did not tackle
03:18the right way with very poor technique put his head down and the coach went nuts and instilled the fear
03:24of god and everybody not to do what that player just did yeah and nobody ever did after that and
03:31that was
03:32great instruction but that's the kind of thing that you have to start way early so that what by the
03:38time kids get to you know ninth grade they they know how to tackle they know the right head placement
03:43so
03:43you're not putting yourself in danger and but you know if you're going to wait until ninth grade
03:49how do you develop blocking techniques without padding up and you know when if it's i don't you know flag
03:58football it just doesn't seem to make any sense for to develop that part of the game and but i
04:03get
04:03where you're i mean you're saying if everybody if everybody started at the same time i think it's
04:07i don't know how they can possibly do it like i i you know parents have concern and many parents
04:12don't
04:12even let their kids play football and i guess to each their own decide our kids expressed an interest
04:17but then never really went very far with their interest and they had so many other things going on
04:22we're like we're not you know it could have been football it could have been lacrosse whatever they were
04:26playing soccer basketball baseball and it was kind of taking up all the seasons and so you know there
04:31was no room for football um i think the reason the biggest reason is they got into other sports before
04:38they started football like before you could play football certainly was the case with me and with my
04:43brother when we were coming up um i'm curious now you know this more than i do do they allow
04:50heading
04:51the ball in soccer at a young age they yes to say you can't do that until you get to
04:56a certain
04:56because that does a ton of damage yeah if there's science to back that up there's nothing wrong with
05:02with getting rid of that i don't remember seeing a whole bunch it can happen the the where i have
05:08seen more concussions happen when players are heading the ball is when they bang heads with somebody else
05:12who's trying it's not it's not the ball right it's the it's the banging of head you made that clear
05:17but
05:17yes yeah that's that's that's the collision that takes place with two players are going in for the
05:20same ball yep so with that you know with that in mind there would be nothing wrong as far as
05:26i'm
05:26concerned with having an age where that is um if there if you have science that says hey these are
05:33form these formative years these are critical for the the growth of the brain and a concussion can set
05:38you back i have no issue with them stepping in and our kids are through it now like they've
05:44survived with minimal damage i hope and and they but i i you know the point being
05:53it's it's it's it's pretty some of the cte stories are pretty sad yeah they're really sad
06:00very sad you know it's because it's a whole life history of doing it if you get your first concussion
06:05when i'm look i i think that they're way more aware of it now with younger kids if some kid
06:10gets
06:11this bell rung that hey you're out for a while you know we're going to take care of your young
06:15kid you're developing and you just got really crushed there you're going to sit out for a while
06:20we're more aware of it now but you know years ago you start playing tackle football and you're 10 years
06:26old and by the time you get through high school that's you know eight years of of contact if you're
06:32a lineman in particular you know that's eight years of lots of contact and if you're have any designs
06:37i'm playing into college and then now you're going bigger faster stronger and that's a lot
06:42i can't imagine that there's too many people that will take up football their freshman year
06:46now and catch up real quick i mean they might if you're a great athlete in high school yeah but
06:53if
06:53there are kids starting when they're 10 and you're not starting till you're 14 15 whatever a lot of
06:57kids are starting that late yeah oh they are but it's i'm saying catch up real quick that's
07:01you're yeah you're because you don't know what it's like playing from behind until you've actually
07:06put the pads on and you get hit for the first time or you hit somebody for the first time
07:10in pads
07:11there's a sound that comes with it that's either exhilarating or it's scary it there's like no in
07:18between with it and those that find it exhilarating will excel those that are scared by it you're always
07:23going to play scared and you're never going to reach that potential you probably shouldn't play the
07:28sport 248-539-9797 warren sap wants kids to avoid tackle football until high school to avoid
07:34hit injuries during their formative years agree disagree i i mean it it might be sort of a just
07:42straight up moot point because how how would this ever happen i don't i can't foresee the entirety of
07:49the united states agreeing that no kid plays till they're a freshman in high school but this is a hall
07:53of fame nfl player that's true that is saying this so it's i think it comes with a little bit
07:57more
07:57gravity there and it's interesting that he's the one that's saying it i'd love to you know get more
08:02in depth with that and yeah and hear from him or others that you know played professionally um
08:07interesting here with with jan although i imagine chances like put the pads on as soon as you can walk
08:11you know oh he's got little teddy running drills yeah he sent me videos uh let's go let's go to
08:20alan flint you're on 971 hello al look at a pad level good morning guys hey what's up program thank
08:25you i'm a seasoned camper of camp in the mountains and all over the michigan up one thing i would
08:32recommend doug is take some kindling for a campfire that's a very key ingredient in the camping experience
08:39and these parks like you're going to stay in there won't be a piece of kindling within five miles
08:44because the campers will scour the grounds for so take some kindling for a good campfire and
08:50i always use a fire starter as opposed to a liquid that ignites i i take you can buy at
08:58home depot or
09:00in one of the stores a a fire starter that that's a little you get that's a great idea sticks
09:06that
09:06work and not only that but also i would also recommend grabbing one of those duraflame logs
09:10as well because those light up right away and then you actually if you have extra wood if you're
09:16planning lighting a fire then yes this is a great idea we do have fire starters but we'll be at
09:21our
09:21place up north before we go camping we have an ample supply of wood and kindling and all that we'll
09:26make sure that we we bring it all thank you 248-539-9797 i'm going camp for people just flip
09:31their
09:31radios on i'm going camping next week and we're getting we're getting suggestions uh nick in a car
09:37young 971 hello nick hey guys how are you what's up hey so um what warren saps said about not
09:44letting
09:44kids start tackle football till ninth grade my uncle um his name his name ed o'neill he was 1971
09:50eighth overall draft pick to lions oh cool um he has the same mindset he um has two sons um
09:57keith o'neill
09:58played at northern arizona university was undrafted free agent to the dallas cowboys their son-in-law
10:04all their his kids so he was a pro on his name drew hadad uh pro football player as well
10:09for the
10:10colts and uh buffalo bills they don't let their kids play football until eighth grade two of drew's
10:15kids now are one's at university of iowa cody hadad and then trey hadad is uh texas a&m commit
10:22for next
10:22year but all these kids did not start playing football until eighth grade and at least two of
10:30one went pro and another two are on their way that's cool i'm glad that they can as i said
10:34catch
10:34up they came from good stock obviously but you know the idea that that you can't do it um yeah
10:43and
10:43i don't think you can regulate it i think parents discretion they let their kids play lacrosse and
10:48every other sport until then track and field was a big one but um football like they didn't play
10:53tackle until eighth grade that wasn't the earliest they let them start nick thank you for sharing i i think
10:58more than likely more than seeing warren sap getting the way he wants it or the way these
11:04guys did it you're gonna have guardian caps on kids when they're 10 and probably maybe all throughout
11:10i wouldn't be surprised if it's yeah if they're not even voluntary at some point those are those
11:14padded helmets that go on the top of the helmet i wouldn't be surprised if they were mandatory through
11:18high school eventually 248-539-9797 it's karshen anderson you're on 97.1
11:25anderson you're on 98.1
11:25anderson you're on 98.1
11:25anderson you're on 98.1
