What camping tips do you have for Doug and his camping trip?
Transcript
00:00I'm not going to dedicate like an hour of the show to it, but I always, I don't mind
00:04reaching out for help, asking for help Gator.
00:06Yeah.
00:07So a couple minutes here, I'll tell you what I need some help with, but, uh, and maybe
00:10you can help me.
00:12Always, always interested in what you have to say.
00:14Okay.
00:14Maybe Kang as well.
00:15Uh, first we said, we get to this.
00:17This is Brad Holmes yesterday on Sirius XM when the topic of Jameer Gibbs contract came
00:22up.
00:46Okay.
00:47So today, if people missed it, he was in uniform out there running, uh, walking.
00:50It was going through walkthrough high step and dark.
00:53He did high step, but that was over to the side.
00:55He, he, he stopped with the full team practice and just went and worked on the
01:01side like injured guys do, but he did participate in uniform and walk through.
01:06So does something happen today?
01:08Yeah.
01:09Very well could happen, uh, today.
01:11It seems like things have changed, perhaps, uh, getting close on a deal with Jameer
01:16Gibbs.
01:16We'll see.
01:17Uh, all right.
01:19So Gator, um, next week we are going to speak.
01:25Spend my wife and I two days camping in the upper peninsula glamping.
01:34No, it's not glamping.
01:35It's, it's, it's, it's straight up camp.
01:37Straight up camping.
01:38Yep.
01:39I bought a tent.
01:41There you go.
01:43We bought a little stove.
01:46Oh, a little, little stove.
01:48Yeah.
01:48We got the, the little butane thing that I know exactly.
01:52A little tailgate stove.
01:53Yeah.
01:53Uh, we've got a, we've got air mattresses for inside the tent.
01:59You just need one.
02:01Yeah.
02:01Yeah.
02:02We, we might have two.
02:04Well, we'll see.
02:05Um, Oh, depends if you're in doghouse or not.
02:07No, no, no, no, no.
02:08It's the size of the air mattresses.
02:10The one like queen bed size.
02:13I may not be big enough.
02:14So we brought the single as well, just in case it's too cramped.
02:19Um, and we think we got all the stuff.
02:23Okay.
02:24You know, we got the bug spray.
02:26Yeah.
02:26I knew that.
02:26We've got, we've got bear spray.
02:29Cause we're going hiking.
02:30Yeah.
02:31And I, you know, want to be prepared for that.
02:33We got like camping lights.
02:35We've got the freeze dried meals.
02:40So you boil the water and it, and it like is, you know, you know, chicken, mac and cheese
02:46in a, in a bag that you pour like a cup of water and stir up and it allegedly makes
02:52a
02:52meal.
02:52We're like, okay, we got to try this.
02:56Um, we got coolers.
02:58We're bringing, you know, paper plates and like, we're, we're, we're, we're going camping
03:06and everyone I talked to, I don't think I personally know any, any campers per se.
03:14Do you, when's the, you, you've gone camping quite a bit as part of your golf trip.
03:19Yeah.
03:19We used to do it.
03:20Didn't it be four days out on Lake Michigan, right on the beach of Lake Michigan.
03:25We'd, we'd pitch our tents out there.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Um, and outside of that, I've, I've camped a couple other times outside of that.
03:32And when's the last time you did it?
03:34Uh, pre COVID.
03:36So probably 2019, 2018, somewhere in there.
03:40Mm hmm.
03:41Okay.
03:41So, and were you good at it?
03:43I mean, I got good at it.
03:45I had, um, all of it, but the last time was done with, with one tent last, the last time
03:51I did it, I had gotten a different tent cause I got tired of the tent that I had was
03:56only
03:56like five feet tall.
03:58I got tired of having to stoop, you know, cause I'm six feet, six one.
04:02Um, and I, I got tired of stooping all the time once I was in there.
04:07Um, and it, it started to show some signs of where I probably need to get some seam seal
04:12to, to, uh, seal that up.
04:15So if the rains came, it wasn't going to leak inside the tent and you know, the rain fly
04:19was on its last legs and all this.
04:22Uh, but the newest tent that I got that I've only used once was absolutely brilliant.
04:28I think it was a Coleman, but it was like over six feet tall and it was, was large and
04:35it
04:35was definitely large.
04:36You could like walk in and now you're, you got a little bit of a palace in there, which
04:39is great.
04:39And it only took minutes to set up.
04:42It was one of these things where you just extend, keep extending the legs.
04:46The next thing you know, you've got this structure.
04:48Now the real part is just battening it down into the sand or the dirt.
04:52So we bought this tent at REI and I took it home and I think Monday I decided, all right,
04:59I better try to put this up before.
05:01So I laid down the footprint, the like ground pad.
05:04It took me 20 minutes.
05:05I can't believe how brilliantly engineered these things are.
05:09Absolutely brilliantly engineered.
05:11Like the smartest people in the world, they design tents is my new opinion.
05:15And if you're going to get one from REI, those are top of the line because those are for
05:18the, you know, the diehard campers and the diehard, like the people that would camp on
05:22a, on a, on a mountain ledge.
05:24And REI has this policy.
05:26If you're a member, you can return anything for any reason up to a year.
05:29And I walked in and I said, okay, if we hate it now, yeah, you can return it.
05:35That's all right, cool.
05:36All right, let's do it.
05:37Kang.
05:37When's the last time you went camping?
05:40Oh God.
05:41Pre-kids.
05:42So past beyond seven years ago.
05:44Do you have any advice?
05:45Yeah.
05:46Don't.
05:47That's my advice.
05:48No, I mean, it's just not for me.
05:49I get it.
05:50People love the outdoors and being with the elements, but I cannot stand bugs.
05:55Like it's not a fear.
05:57It's just an annoyance.
05:58Like mosquitoes, like ticks, whatever, you know what I mean?
06:01Ants, spiders, whatever it is.
06:02I just, I hate that feeling.
06:04It's always bothering me.
06:06Like, or if I get bit, then I'm itching, I'm scratching.
06:08And that is the number one reason.
06:10Number two, I just like, if you're talking like real camping where there's actual possible
06:15bears, that sounds so stupid to me.
06:18Like, I don't want to know that either.
06:20There's not, it's not like Michigan has a rash of bear attacks.
06:24No, no, but I don't even want to be in an area where there might be a bear.
06:27Like to the risk reward for me, Doug, like I said, this is, everyone's different.
06:31It's not worth it.
06:32Like, why am I even going to put myself in that situation on purpose?
06:36So that's the like extreme camping.
06:38The regular camping where a lot of people do around parks, like my buddies, I have a couple
06:42of them that go camping every year, three, four times a year.
06:44And they try to convince me to come to, and him and his wife are like, you know, eggs in
06:48the morning just taste better.
06:50It's different when you cook them outdoor in an open flame or whatever.
06:52And that's fine.
06:53I've done it before, but I like air conditioning.
06:57You know what I mean?
06:57I like, I like just going to the fridge, grabbing a beer or a pop.
07:02Like, that's what I like.
07:03Are you, are you going to a campground or are you just like, you're going to other campers
07:08around you?
07:08The other campers there, there'll be a ranger, there'll be like, okay.
07:12So there's like bathrooms you can go use.
07:14Yes.
07:14I got another one too.
07:16Actual plumbing.
07:17So you're not like, you know, well, I went and got new, made sure I had shower shoes.
07:23Yes.
07:23And so doing the lean, get that shovel and you do the lean, uh, or grab a tree.
07:30You're right.
07:30That's what I'm saying.
07:31Yeah.
07:31Yeah.
07:32Um, you don't have to worry about that, which is great.
07:34So the other thing is, so your car is going to be nearby.
07:37Yep.
07:37It's not like you're parking and then you're hiking into the woods and you're not backpacking.
07:41Your car is like right there.
07:43So this is a totally different experience.
07:44So no worries about, you don't have to worry about the bears.
07:47You're not going to worry about other critters that you might hear.
07:50I remember that one of the first times I went camping.
07:53Yeah.
07:54Uh, or I guess I don't know the first time it was about 25 years ago or so.
07:57I was at the, uh, Allegheny national reservoir and in a tent and we were, we had rented a
08:06pontoon boat.
08:07We took the pontoon boat out miles and then found this area we wanted to camp at and set
08:11up our tents.
08:12And that night was an experience for me for the first time because I'm outside and I like
08:17you've got tents all closed up, but you hear every thing, every step that's going on outside,
08:25whether it's one of your buddies in the other tents is getting up and having to go to the
08:28bathroom or it's a raccoon that is, you think it's a raccoon.
08:31Yeah.
08:32That is, that is rating the pontoon boat and somehow flipping up the seats and grabbing
08:37all the hot dog buns and everything, which happened.
08:39You hear everything.
08:41We woke up one morning, open to unzip the tent and I swear to God, and this is not a
08:47joke.
08:48Do not make any lewd references, but there is a beaver staring at us.
08:54Not 10 feet away.
08:56I just started laughing and I, yeah, yeah.
08:59Use line.
08:59Nice beaver.
09:00But what, look at what is this thing doing here?
09:04And the whole time I'm thinking, is that a bear?
09:06Is that a bear?
09:07Is that a bear?
09:08Is that a bear?
09:09Did you hear that?
09:10What was that?
09:10That was a bear, right?
09:11You guys heard a bear last night, right?
09:13Did you hear that?
09:14I mean, it's incredible what you do, like your, your senses are all in tune.
09:18This is different though, because you're out in a campground area.
09:21There's going to be people that don't have tents because they got campers.
09:24Oh yeah.
09:24You're going to be fine.
09:25I hear generators.
09:26Yeah, exactly.
09:27You're going to be fine.
09:28Let's go to Eric in Brighton.
09:30You're on 97.
09:30One.
09:31Hello, Eric.
09:32Hey, how's it going guys?
09:33What's up?
09:34No, just about the, um, the camp.
09:36And I used to do that when I was a younger man until I bought a motor home.
09:40But if you have the air mattress, I recommend getting, uh, like army cots or cots from like
09:45wherever and you get your air mattress off the ground.
09:48It's so much easier.
09:49It's easier for what?
09:51To get, well, it's like you're on a bed, you know, you turn your legs and your feet are
09:55on the ground.
09:56Oh, like to get, to get in and out.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Yeah.
09:59Yeah.
09:59Yeah.
09:59Yeah.
09:59Just, yeah.
10:00In and out of bed.
10:00That's all.
10:01It's not, it's not a bad idea.
10:02But then you're not sharing the cot, you share the air mattress, if you know what I'm saying,
10:07Eric.
10:07Well, my wife and I had two cots and then one big queen air mattress and put it on top
10:12of both of them.
10:12Oh.
10:13Like a bed.
10:13And it worked out well.
10:15Yes, sir.
10:16That's actually, that's a saucy call right there.
10:19I like that.
10:19You know, and again, um, we could, we could buy the cot, see if we need them.
10:24If we don't, return them.
10:27But go on camping.
10:29I'm just looking for some advice.
10:30I would, I would also advise.
10:31It's not bad advice.
10:32It's not bad advice.
10:34Extra steaks, like tent steaks.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Make sure you have extra tents.
10:38Oh, porterhouses, I was thinking.
10:40Tomahawks.
10:42Filets.
10:42What?
10:43Yes.
10:43Filets.
10:44I absolutely agree.
10:45No fuss.
10:45No fuss.
10:46When I did the dry run with putting the tent up, either A, I missed some steaks that were
10:52supposed to go in, or B, it comes with extras.
10:55So.
10:55Okay, good.
10:56Well, you want to make sure you have plenty of steaks because there's nothing worse than
10:59like, oh, and then, hey, how about this?
11:01Make sure you have something to pound the steaks into the ground.
11:04It could be as simple as a shoe.
11:06I got a mallet.
11:06I got a, I brought a, I've got a mallet pack.
11:08You're ready to go.
11:09I think so.
11:11I don't think I deal with this freeze-dried meal crap.
11:14Oh, dude, I want to try it just because I think it sounds like what you should do.
11:17We got this freeze-dried, two freeze-dried meals.
11:20One, I think it's chicken pot pie, and the other's like buffalo chicken mac and cheese.
11:25Yeah, or, or, or you pack food and put it in the cooler with the ice.
11:31Well, we got the stove.
11:32We're going to cook.
11:33We're going to do some cooking, too, but we're going to try this thing.
11:38Freeze-dried food, Kang.
11:39Does that sound good?
11:39Don't you realize?
11:40Yeah, when he doesn't have to.
11:41When he doesn't have to?
11:42That's what I thought.
11:42That doesn't make sense.
11:43You're not out there for three weeks.
11:45No, Gator, what are you, like, training for the Marine Corps?
11:48You don't, like, no, just get some real food.
11:50Your wife's on board with the freeze-dried stuff, huh?
11:52We got to live off the land.
11:54She's not.
11:55Won't eat berries, then we'll find.
11:57You know what she's saying?
11:58Don't forget the wine.
12:00Right?
12:00Seriously.
12:01Lots of it.
12:02Right.
12:03And a corkscrew.
12:05Red, please.
12:06We'll get to more of your suggestions coming up.
12:08Also, an NFL player, former NFL player said what?
12:11We'll get to that at 1130.
