00:00where the giants sit currently where you get to the deadline even before the deadline it's
00:05you're going to sell and i set the over under on two and a half major leaguers and immediately got
00:09bet to three and a half and then you went in and bet the alternate at four and a half
00:13and
00:13i don't think it ever got to five and a half but it very well could have because six guys
00:17got dealt
00:18and so when you look at that and i love the zach benazian comments with you and grandy yesterday
00:22where to paraphrase it's yeah this sucks and forget what we got back and whether or not we
00:27like that it sucks to have to be that team like you're that guy where you got to sell as
00:33much as
00:34you can because you're that bad yeah conversation was actually kind of over but then on his way out
00:38the door i'm like you you feel good about what y'all did yesterday and that's what he said
00:41yeah look being a seller this isn't the most professional thing to say it sucks so you know
00:49it's not where we want to be it really isn't and and we're going to continue to challenge ourselves
00:53to make sure we're not in that spot again but when you are in that spot you need to do
00:58really
00:58well um we were fortunate i think to add the talent that we added we're excited about where our system
01:04is continuing to challenge our guys at the major league level and and just get better because we
01:09we absolutely need to get better uh fly away dude what'd you think what'd you think i thought what
01:14they did was fantastic you can always get more you can get better prospects and ultimately we don't
01:20know if any of these guys is going to be any good but when you look at each individual trade
01:25or all the trades in totality you took expiring contracts you took guys who you probably didn't
01:32quote need whether it's you know killian and you know the other reliever uh eric miller thank you
01:37that you got rid of the elliot ramos one is the most curious to me because he still is under
01:43team
01:43control he's been an all-star he's a younger player but if you don't believe that he can be good
01:48enough defensively and that's the one thing i kept hearing from all the people with the giants
01:53who talked about these moves you got to get back to pitching and defense and so you added a bunch
01:58of
01:58arms are they all going to be major league studs probably not you added a variety of ages and
02:04experience levels you got a bunch of pitchers and you got rid of some contracts that were just
02:09going to expire so i look at that not knowing what you got back you were able to move off
02:13of six
02:14people on your major league team replace them with six younger people you already have and start to
02:19take a look at what next year is going to look like i thought it was a great deadline for
02:23them i think
02:24what you said there in the middle is sort of how um i process the whole elliot ramos part of
02:30it eric
02:31miller's different that's another young ish player with a lot of years of control ahead um but i think
02:38manassian even admitted this the giants were just addicted to the idea of being able to turn eric
02:44miller into getting their hands on a guy who was a year and a half ago one of the top
02:4910 prospects in
02:50all of baseball marcelo meyer out of uh out of boston um it hasn't gone well for him since he
02:57came up
02:57to the bigs but that's only in about 350 at-bats and he's still only 23 years old so the
03:03idea that they
03:03could get their hands on him um and he's apparently excited about a fresh start that's what sort of
03:10enticed them to get rid of eric miller the ramos one is very interesting but i i'm with what you
03:16said
03:16there in the middle when to me i process that deal says to me the giants admit that they got
03:25away from
03:25themselves they got away from their core pitching and defense oracle park 2010 2012 2014 they got
03:36completely away from it and they found themselves trotting out a pitching staff that's logan webb
03:41robbie ray and whatever whatever including the bullpen whatever completely including the bullpen
03:48and then you back that pitching staff up with people running around in the outfield who either
03:55are not plus defenders or quite frankly might even be completely out of position um and and you can't do
04:03that that's just not the what this ballpark is is about so um i think they looked at this and
04:10they
04:10went you know what we we have some positional overlap um i think zach admitted even yesterday they've got
04:18so much coming through the farm system in the middle infield that they sort of they sort of need
04:26to keep left field open if casey needs it like casey schmidt needs a spot he's not a perfect left
04:33fielder he's a better he's going to be a better left fielder than elliot ramos is yep um but and
04:38he
04:38still needs to learn the position more but they need to have that open for him in case he needs
04:44that spot
04:44because either they don't have another left fielder ready or the infield positions are all locked up
04:51and so you move on from elliot ramos and it does two things it allows you to focus more on
04:57defense
04:57in the outfield and you get to acquire good young pitching by everything you're doing in the draft
05:03and at the trade deadline felt like 80 percent of their acquisitions were pitchers and that was the
05:08giant saying yeah i think we kind of screwed that up we got away from pitching big time it's what
05:13we do
05:13and one of the guys they got in the ramos trade was uh this kid lalane who's 6 7 and
05:18he's got about
05:19a strikeout and a half per inning right now and so he's somebody i think has a lot of upside
05:24and
05:24you got jeff kent's kid which is kind of fun hitting 300 down in high a hitting 302 with an
05:30ops of 792
05:31and he said that they loved him all the way back in the draft and by the way how did
05:35he he finally
05:36gave us the pronunciation is it lalon he pronounced it lalon i'm pretty sure it's lalani okay so we got
05:42three possibilities lalane lalon or lalani i read a story in the athletic and they said the
05:46pronunciation was lalani but i don't know who to trust so you trust the media over zach manassian
05:54okay it's risky and it's 2026 dude you're not supposed to trust the media i said i didn't know
05:58who to trust but i said i read the story in the athletic and they said lalani 11 days that
06:03accident
06:03was held underneath rap and this pronunciation might be held under for 11 days they stifled it
06:10stifled is what the word was 11 days grandy 11 days possibly they didn't let that out they all knew
06:18you're welcome all of them i mean how many i wonder but and i wonder how many people know the
06:24correct
06:24pronunciation similarly anyway yeah i like them i like the moves yeah i like the deadline and you know
06:32again we don't know if any of these guys is going to be great but they did create some some
06:37roster
06:38flexibility going forward and one thing that we have to keep an eye on not immediately maybe not
06:42even next year but willie adamas is going to be a second baseman for this team he cannot be your
06:47shortstop for that much longer if you want to be pitching in defense he can't play short he can play
06:53second that's fine and ideally he'd be the dh every now and again but you need a shortstop who can
06:59actually hold it down over there because right now your left side with adamas and chapman who's
07:04not playing it's not good enough defensively huh and your outfield defense and maybe it's recency
07:10bias but that jung hu lee uh the turn well that didn't go well and i'm gonna turn but he's
07:16been
07:16good out there he fell over the guy fell over yeah but i mean i know i know it fits
07:21perfectly with
07:22this giant season it just fits perfectly with the narrative like we're gonna start focusing on
07:26pitching and defense i mean there's so many i guess here's my reaction to that is that a terrible
07:30way for a baseball game to end sure terrible um but at the same time when i watch this giant
07:36season
07:37do you know how many things i got to get to before i get to jung hu lee like i
07:41just don't come on yeah
07:42like i just don't want to come at jung hu lee because he got twisted and fell down you know
07:46i mean he's
07:47been he's been good this year he's been good he's been good out there he's been good offensively
07:51you know what i mean you got like i want to actually go back to your adamus point because
07:55you kind of made my head sort of split open there for a second so you want to move him
07:59to second base
08:01and does that actually fix anything first of all i have no who's the shortstop casey
08:08probably not immediately my thing was more when one of these various shortstops is ready okay and
08:12you've got like five or six of your top prospects are shortstops they're very young though so this is
08:17going to be a minute now that's going to be a minute number one number two um you know keelan
08:23gavin keelan is probably he's not the the supposed best of the group of prospects but he's the closest
08:30he's the oldest so could he take over a middle infield spot soon sure you could do that does willie
08:37adamus moving to second fix any of your willie adamus problems i guess what are your willie adamus
08:44problems well there are primarily the defense is the number one problem see i don't feel that that's
08:48the number one problem i feel the number one problem um with with willie adamus is uh rather
08:55than shortstop defense um it's sort of uh hmm how do i phrase this it just feels like he's being
09:05paid
09:05for a lot of things that he doesn't do i guess that that's how i would phrase it and and
09:11that's more
09:12than one thing you're being paid to be a middle of the order hitter you're not a middle of the
09:17order
09:17hitter um you're being paid to clearly be a representative of this team and it seems that
09:26to willie that means being a great positive clubhouse guy and i think he is that that's where gatorade
09:35showers come from and he keeps people loose but when that translates to um you know look you can
09:44come down wherever you want on the idea of is he working hard enough with wash i don't know if
09:49you
09:50saw that whole apple tv thing last week i know the jino i know tony vitela thinks it's a bunch
09:55of
09:55bullschmidt and uh and and and maybe the injury gets in the way there but there are there's a little
10:02bit of smoke there there's a little bit of buzz there um i don't hear him speak for the team
10:08very
10:09often you know what i mean like that's still does speak for the team outside of logan webb this is
10:14the problem right well matt i think chap does too but when he's healthy he can't really now one of
10:19those things that i get bugged by and i'm gonna not do this as direct accusation but i do think
10:26sometimes athletes don't fully understand what you're being paid for like for example um let's
10:34talk about football for a second why does a quarterback make 50 to 60 million dollars if he's
10:40really good face of the franchise that's exactly right it's not just because it's such an important
10:47position that's a big part of it but it also means that you're part spokesman you are the most
10:55famous guy and that takes a there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that the giants
11:02have five guys i think do i have that right who have a contract that totals out at 90 million
11:10or
11:10more yeah jung-ho and jung-ho lee jung-ho lee who doesn't adamus chapman endeavors jung-ho lee
11:15doesn't speak the language so there's that logan webb who completely handles that responsibility
11:24and has for the for a while i think matt chapman for the most part does too although i know
11:30some
11:30people question his leadership from the incident that happened earlier this year yelling at casey
11:35schmidt but i think chapman um i don't think he ducks a lot in the clubhouse rafi devers openly ducks
11:42it he will literally tell you that he's ducking it in fact he speaks to the media mainly to tell
11:48the
11:48media why he won't speak to the media um and then willie adamus you'll notice in fact i don't want
11:56to make this self-serving at all willie has come on this show twice and if memory serves both times
12:03before the year starts huh why is it before the year starts because he's uh oh for oh no errors
12:13where
12:14are you in you know what i mean where are you in june when the batting average is lower than
12:21you want
12:21it or whatever and i just i i think there's i think there's more to chew on there for willie
12:29adamus and
12:29i don't think he loves it and i understand that but 182 million dollars says that you probably should
12:38be a little more clutch at the plate you need to be more sure-handed in the field and you
12:43need to be a
12:43little bit more out front with with the organization he does all of those things a little i'd love to
12:49see him do all of those things a lot and actually only one of those can you completely control
12:55because he's trying at the plate and he's trying in the field but the like get your face out there
13:02and be one of the the spokespeople for the organization thing you can do that every night if
13:08you want you can it's difficult to do when you're losing all the time and you're having a little bit
13:13of a struggle year he's below 700 now with his ops and i'm not saying he'll get moved off a
13:18short stop
13:18soon but the long-term future of willie adamus for me is as a second baseman that way you could
13:24have a
13:25better defensive player at short and maybe it is one of these younger guys who eventually comes up but
13:30just looking at where they are right now going into their next series and the rest of this year
13:36it's going to be a lot of the youngsters who are all still getting to know uh as including eddie's
13:42leonard oh man who was out there today getting his first hit and basabe who's been absolutely on fire
13:48but he's been interested the rest of this year and it's a full august it's a full september you've got
13:53two months of you know kind of name tag giants games figuring out who actually they have out there
13:58um eldridge lee adamus devers and then it gets crazy everybody's got those right this is the
14:06lineup today eldridge lee adamus devers basabe kennedy mccray leonard cavanaugh and then spelled
14:18by firman and gilbert firman yeah firman he got in there i'm gonna have to look that one up i
14:27know
14:28that firman is a college in the southern conference socon shout out firman it's also a guy named nate
14:34who can play second base for the san francisco johns no firman oh i did that same joke while you
14:39were up that's a shame yeah give me a zero i know i actually thought that that's what someone said
14:45wasn't it when uh uh evan webeck was on evan was on the lineup he's in texas we were talking
14:52deadline with him and then we're like hey they just traded six people who's in the lineup tonight
14:57and he goes the dh and he's on the phone so because the dh is nate firman and i go
15:02nate firman
15:03the warrior grade like what are you yeah what are you i'd never heard of him nate firman
15:09he's on the giants yeah now that would be a comeback story if it was nate firman
15:14he's been gone for 10 years yes yes it would we could play a fun game show giant or not
15:21oh god make up names right you tell me if they're currently on the roster or not i probably would
15:27have a lower batting average than willie adamas because it's been hard to keep track and you know
15:32that 40 man's been really fluid of late it sure has yeah like current giants eddie's leonard
15:40buddy kennedy nate firman oslevis basabe drew cavanaugh um blade tidwell reaver san martin that's
15:52right uh anybody else that's kind of out of left field some of you probably don't know that jason
15:59foley has been up for a while jason foley's on the team yeah those are giants he's supposed to be
16:04closer i'm told well if you ever get a lead i mean you need a late lead to close yeah
16:09who is the
16:10closer now that uh caleb killian is a philly not that caleb is a great question yeah caleb killian
16:16actually does not deserve the label that we just gave him the giants have gone sans closer all year
16:24um i mean you know what that is a great point thank you greg wait a minute who finished they
16:33won a game
16:34on monday logan webb through six shutout innings i think they tried with tristan beck and then he got
16:42one out and he gave up a homer and san martin came in is that right pasta i can't remember
16:51yeah san martin got the last two outs after tristan beck started it was not a safe situation
16:56they were up by four yeah reaver san martin it's been a long year kid dude you're not even kidding
17:03and it's still got a long ways to go we got a whole two months of baseball two it's a
17:11long way to go
17:12yeah this has been a hell of a cruise dude hell of a cruise but yeah yeah until otherwise noted
17:20yesterday or monday was a uh apparently i'm told it was a good day all right the baseball people
17:28yeah they love them and they love the prospects they have to look the farm system is top five now
17:34when you had six players in the majors and i guess you traded a minor leaguer as well and you
17:39got back
17:39about 10 players i think it was eight total okay so eight players back none of them are expiring
17:45none of them are going to be people who are going to walk for nothing so you just kind of
17:48start this whole thing not completely over but you still have three good vets you've got logan webb
17:54hopefully casey's raring to go for the start of next year and you give it another crack next year
17:59um it was very clear from zach manassian that of all the acquisitions um marcello meyer might have been
18:05their actual lead acquisition even though it didn't feel that way i know the first deal with
18:11louisa rise it was the first one on actual deadline day i know malley went first um but uh ramon
18:18marquez
18:18from the phillies was a top 100 prospect in baseball and so people were kind of like that's the
18:24the headliner but marcello meyer came much later in the day and was clearly a surprise and he's probably
18:33the one of all of those eight names that you will see in a giants uniform this year especially with
18:39the holes in the infield second and third base are now open he can play either as of a year
18:44and a half
18:45ago he was one of the top 10 prospects in baseball but he's now had 350 at bats with the
18:51red sox he has
18:52not gotten a hit in most of them um but zach kind of talked at length about meyer uh yesterday
19:00when he
19:01was with us on 95 7 the game to get this type of talent 23 years old a lot of
19:07time left a lot more
19:08growth that's going to happen there just felt like an opportunity we couldn't pass up someone that we
19:13think can be impactful on both sides of the game as mark was talking you know we talked about defense
19:18um we think he's going to be a plus defender he can run the bases there's power there's hit ability
19:23so we think there's a really strong well-rounded game and that's the type of game we want to play
19:28where we can beat teams in a lot of different ways and we feel like marcello is going to bring
19:34that
19:34to the table a lot of people here that are excited to get to work with them ron washington
19:39hunter mentz you know we're all excited to to see him and and as we look to try and try
19:44and build a
19:45core group we're hoping he's the type of player that can be right there with bryce eldridge for years
19:50to come so grandy followed up with great when yeah we're gonna we do pretty good medical review
19:56obviously prior to a trade so i have a sense that he's feeling great and um and that he's ready
20:02to get out and and start a rehab assignment here soon we don't have a specific date he's actually
20:07going to come to san francisco our doctors medical staff can see him in person get a little bit better
20:11feel for that um but we're really hoping it's sooner rather than later and and uh as the team gets
20:16back
20:17in town we're able to review those things hopefully that can be um that can be ironed out where we
20:22can
20:22talk about a specific date to expect him here at oracle park yeah so dive in jot the name down
20:27marcello meyer uh because i don't like even when a season has been ruined like this one has i don't
20:35like it when the game is turned on and i'm like i don't know who that is or i didn't
20:40even know that
20:41that person was on the team that's the naked feeling for your boy yep so marcello meyer he's on the
20:47way
