00:02Emergency services were called to the Smithfield bypass in northern Cairns after 1.25 this afternoon.
00:09A ute, which had allegedly been stolen from Palm Cove, had crashed into several other cars.
00:15Four people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries,
00:18but a 25-year-old Kawarra Beach woman died at the scene.
00:22We should be looking forward to a long and healthy life,
00:25and unfortunately that opportunity has been taken away from this young lady
00:30and it's devastating for her and the family and everybody that's attended to see that scene.
00:36Soon after the crash, the 36-year-old man who allegedly stole the ute
00:41went to another vehicle and demanded they drive him away.
00:45The alleged offender was caught by police around 2.15, closer to Cairns.
00:50He's here in hospital under police guard.
00:53On a personal level, as a parent of two children, they're about the same age as this young woman.
01:00I share the community's outrage that this type of offending is occurring.
01:04It's far from good enough and our community deserves better.
01:07It's clear the incident has affected all involved.
01:10Police say there'll be a thorough investigation.
