00:14I thought the most important thing he said was the key to the season

00:21Your thoughts on that, please.
00:23Yeah, he did say that.
00:24Now, he said that in a follow-up to me saying,
00:28man, you haven't talked a lot about Jaden Daniels.
00:31Isn't he the key to the season?
00:32And he said, well, of course.
00:34And then he said, but I think beyond that, it's the coordinators,
00:36and it all sort of goes hand in hand,
00:39especially with David Blau and Jaden on offense.
00:44But he essentially said David Blau and Durante Jones
00:48are going to determine the upcoming season.
00:51And I think a lot of it is just the fact that they're newcomers, first-timers,
00:56and we're not sure what they're going to do
01:00when the spotlight is on them in a real game.
01:04How will they game plan heading into it?
01:07How will they deal with game day?
01:09How will they deal with adjustments in game?
01:12All of that stuff, they've never done it before,
01:15and we've got one on each side.
01:17A lot of teams have a lot of new coordinators around the league.
01:20I think Washington's got two of them, and that's what Logan honed in on.
01:26By the way, I agree with you.
01:27Logan's so good.
01:29I really do like Logan Paulson as an analyst.
01:36I think he's excellent, and I think he delivers it
01:38in a very easy-to-consume way.
01:41I think he's really smart, and he's likable.
01:45You've got to have that trait if you're going to be in it for a long time.
01:49I mean, he's that, and he does some really good work
01:52on all of the Commander's YouTube channels.
01:55He does a podcast with Grant Paulson that you can listen to.

02:01And that, Cal, reminded me of something that I didn't read yesterday
02:05that I wanted to read.
02:07It was something that Dan Quinn said about Durante Jones over the weekend.
02:13Did you guys see or hear this?
02:15I'm going to read it to you.
02:17This was Saturday, the first day of fans being allowed in to watch practice,
02:23and they got a tremendous crowd.
02:25And he said this when he was asked about Durante Jones' scheme
02:31and whether or not his scheme has changed his, Dan Quinn's,
02:36perspective on defensive coaching.
02:39And Quinn said, quote,
02:41I wouldn't say it's changed perspective,
02:44but I like that he's on the front edge of some things.
02:48And so, so often at the line of scrimmage,
02:51offenses can have the pen last,
02:55meaning the last say in what's going to go on in the play.
03:00Who they want to check to,
03:02this change, and defensively,
03:04we just accept and adjust.
03:07Okay, that happened, we adjust,
03:10this happened, we adjust.
03:11What I like in the system that we have now
03:13is we are also into some of the checking
03:17to make the offense have to adjust.
03:20So I think in the years ahead,
03:22defenses are trying to be in that space more,
03:24and it's nice to see us go into that space now.
03:30That last line and the first part of it
03:34where he says the front edge of things
03:37is where Durante's defense is.
03:39And it's nice,
03:41and this is nice to see us go into that space now
03:46is really very much an admission
03:49that what they've been doing the last two years
03:52was not front edge,
03:56was not front,
03:58was not, you know, new.
04:00What they've been doing is somewhat antiquated.
04:03Now, he didn't use that word.
04:04And by the way,
04:05Dan Quinn's defensive system
04:07is still employed throughout the league.
04:09It does take personnel,
04:12A, B, some good teaching and good coaching.
04:16And I'm not sure that they had that
04:18over the last two years.
04:20But he basically told you with that answer,
04:22they're doing something that he believes
04:25is more current with today's NFL,
04:28admitting that last year and the year before was not.
04:32There was a follow-up question
04:34where he was asked on what led him to believe
04:36they needed a new defensive system.
04:39And he said,
04:40quote,
04:40I just think going through offenses and defenses
04:44over the last five, six years,
04:46when would you want to check?
04:48A lot of times a defense might have an all-out blitz
04:50and offense checks
04:51and you want to get out of that blitz
04:52because a screen or something could hurt you.
04:55And when could you take that further?
04:57And so defense is often trying to disguise man and zone,
04:59and that's been popular for a while.
05:01So now having the ability to get in and out of calls,
05:04it has to be easy to learn,
05:07and it's got to be relatable
05:09and something you can execute quickly.
05:13And having a system that you're able to do that,
05:16that's a big deal.
05:19He's telling you right then and there.
05:21Because remember,
05:22when he took over the defense from Joe Witt Jr.,
05:25you know,
05:26before the game in Madrid,
05:28right?
05:28I think that was the game.
05:29Right after Joe Witt Jr.
05:31had to face multiple great offenses in a row,
05:35Quinn took the defense over just in time
05:37for the Dolphins in Madrid.
05:40Now, with that said,
05:41one of the things he emphasized was simplifying it,
05:44making sure that players can play fast,
05:47making it more relatable.
05:48It was clearly not Joe Witt Jr.'s best strength
05:54to communicate and to make things relatable
05:58and easy to learn.
06:01He likes Durante Jones.
06:03We'll see what happens on the field.
06:05You know, it's all talk in August.
06:08We'll see what happens when they actually start to play games.
06:12But he made the change.
06:15Certainly when he made the change,
06:17and there was no doubt he was going to
06:19change things up defensively
06:21with a coordinator hire
06:23that was much different than the one he had.
06:26And he decided to do,
06:27in essence,
06:28the same thing on offense as well.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Look,
06:34it's going to help Durante Jones
06:36as a first-time coordinator,
06:38no matter what scheme he's implementing,
06:41that they've got better personnel,
06:43more likely than not,
06:44than they've had the last two years.
06:46It does make you wonder
06:48why after 2024,
06:51when the defense struggled so much,
06:53and there were issues,
06:55for sure.
06:56Now,
06:57that last,
06:57that next-to-last game,
06:59the turnovers they had in Detroit were huge.
07:01They were impactful to the outcome of that game.
07:04But then,
07:05obviously,
07:05they got run over
07:06in the NFC Championship game.
07:08But you wonder if he gave any thought
07:11to making that change after year one
07:14and what would have been
07:16the result last year.
07:18I thought that was interesting.
07:19I had it on my list to read yesterday
07:21and just forgot to do it
07:23because I think,
07:25in essence,
07:25he was admitting,
07:27yeah,
07:28we're not,
07:30we're different defensively.
07:32We have something that's less antiquated.
07:36We're new defensively,
07:39and it's going to make a big difference.
07:41We'll see.
