Al Golden on How Bengals Defense Has Been a Dominant Force in Training Camp
Transcript
00:00What did you like about Brian Cook's prep there at the game?
00:02Yeah, it was nice.
00:03Again, he was toning for a drop earlier in the red zone.
00:06He knew it.
00:08He had a good break on the ball.
00:09We had some pressure.
00:10He made Joe move in the pocket.
00:12And obviously, that combination is going to be powerful.
00:15We can make a guy move and get that kind of break.
00:17It's going to be great.
00:17Why wasn't Dax out there?
00:20Again, anytime we're watching somebody, I'll just leave that question for the head coach.
00:24But we were just watching him from a health standpoint.
00:26He's fine, though.
00:27So, Jalen Davis, we're rotating in with the ones in Jasir.
00:30Is that just y'all want to get a look at Jasir, protecting the channel?
00:32Yeah, we're going to get a look at a lot of guys.
00:34Luck's got a lot with the ones today as well.
00:37And we're doing the same on the perimeter with Bobo.
00:39So, we're going to keep rotating guys in.
00:42I think Figa stepped up both inside and outside, which is great to see.
00:46He's having a really good camp.
00:47And DJ Ivy is as consistent as ever.
00:50How would you describe the pass rush so far at camp now?
00:53Yeah, good.
00:53But I think the middle push is making the tight turn a little bit easier on the edge.
00:59And that's really helped us move the quarterback back.
01:03And he can't step into throws as much.
01:05So, got to keep working it.
01:06We'll get BJ back pretty soon.
01:10TJ Slayton came back in great shape.
01:12And he's been a really, really big improvement for us inside as well.
01:15What have you seen from Boye on the edge specifically, Alvin?
01:20Gives you a different type.
01:21Yeah, I just saw one there, right?
01:22He's dynamic in terms of that.
01:23He's versatile.
01:24He can play defensive end.
01:26He can play in the apex.
01:27He can give you a couple of drops.
01:29And he can win with speed.
01:31And he has enough power to go speed to power if he has to.
01:34How's battle looked so far?
01:36Battle.
01:37Jordan's having a great camp.
01:38Yep.
01:38I just love where he's at mentally.
01:40He's prepared.
01:41He's in great condition.
01:43And, again, I think we're, you know, starting to eliminate the things that are representative of bad defenses, right?
01:49I mean, we're communicating.
01:51We're not miscommunicating.
01:53We're playing our fundamentals.
01:54Everybody's doing their job.
01:56And we're improving.
01:57And we have consistency.
01:59And Jordan's a big part of that.
02:01How important was it?
02:02I mean, if you have a bad first week of camp, it doesn't mean it's all downhill from there.
02:05But to come out, it seems like you guys have had a really good first week of you.
02:09Yeah, I think so.
02:10Obviously, we're getting challenged at the highest level.
02:12Every day.
02:14Saw a great run attack today by our offense.
02:16The play action was impactful today.
02:19And, obviously, the perimeter is what it is when Joe wants to go deep to those guys.
02:24So, it's a good challenge but a good start for us.
02:26And, again, we're just trying to get good at practice six.
02:29And we did that.
02:30Now we have to hit this install and be good tonight in our walkthrough.
02:33Now, in the offseason, you talked a lot about having wave after wave.
02:37And that's something you would really like to shoot for.
02:39What have you seen in the first week or so that indicates you'll be able to do that and how
02:45important is that?
02:46Yeah, just, you know, Miles, he continues to grow.
02:51Cedric continues to grow.
02:53You know, I mentioned TJ earlier, Chris Jenkins.
02:55So, you know, we've got some young guys that are getting a look.
02:59So, there's a lot of opportunity there.
03:02We're going to keep mixing the formulas, keep changing guys up, keep guys fresh.
03:06And everybody's going to get a good look.
03:08We're six days into this thing.
03:09So, we've got a long way to go.
03:10What's it been like seeing Dexter Lawrence and Pats as last couple days?
03:13Just the end of it.
03:14This is like working at Temple with this noise in the background right here.
03:17What's it like seeing Dexter Lawrence and Pats these last couple days?
03:19Yeah, good.
03:20I mean, Dex is everything you would imagine that he is.
03:25He came back in great shape, you know, and I think that's a testament to him and his work ethic
03:31and his energy, renewed energy, and his focus.
03:34So, he's powerful.
03:37We're going to continue to work, get him to beat blocks.
03:40His middle push is significant.
03:42So, he's doing a great job of buying in and being a leader for us.
03:46Is this kind of what you were hoping for when y'all looked at this defensive line on paper in
03:49the offseason?
03:50Yeah, we're excited.
03:52Again, Upstairs did a tremendous job giving us depth and versatility.
03:56And I think I said after the first day or before the first day, we're trying to find out what
04:02we do best, too.
04:03And, you know, our guys are putting it on film every day what we do best.
04:07And we're making little adaptations daily to make sure that we, you know, we are, you know, using them the
04:14way they should be.
04:15So, specifically, how do you use your linebackers so far early on?
04:18Just their command.
04:19Command is night and day, controlling the line of scrimmage, getting us in the right checks, getting us in the
04:26right fronts.
04:27You know, we call it empowerment.
04:29You know, just, you know, having the freedom to, if you see it, you know, get us a line the
04:34way you want or get us in a stunt the way you want.
04:36So, I think that's been significant.
04:37I think they're playing downhill.
04:39I think they're playing a lot faster.
04:41And both of them are in great shape and came back ready to go.
04:44I think they got something to prove.
04:46I think they got an edge.
04:48What allows a linebacker to play down, go out?
04:51Again, just from my experience, just experience, comfort level with the scheme, the ability to play fast because your mind
05:02is quiet from a technique, assignment, alignment standpoint.
05:06And right now, they are demonstrating every day that that is the case for them.
05:11So, we've got to keep it that way.
05:13It doesn't look like it's too big for Takario Davis.
05:15What have you thought of him?
05:16No, I mean, he's up for the challenge.
05:17You know, he's long.
05:19Sometimes you can pigeonhole guys, you know, because they're long or they're a long strider.
05:25But he's got lateral quickness.
05:27He's got tremendous reach.
05:28So, he can play big at the line of scrimmage.
05:30He's got catch-up speed vertically, and he's got ball skills.
05:35So, excited about him.
05:37We're going to continue to give him opportunities, especially to go against T and Jamar here before too long and
05:43keep it rolling.
05:44But I'm very excited about him, and he's a smart kid.
05:47It looks like the offense has had a lot of different wrinkles.
05:50How encouraging has it been seeing the communication and kind of picking up all that stuff on the fly?
05:54It's tough.
05:55It's Star Wars before the snap.
05:56I mean, when you have a veteran quarterback, veteran O-line, I mean, the running backs are veteran, the tight
06:03ends, the wide receivers are veteran.
06:05You can do a lot of things pre-snap.
06:06So, that has probably been the biggest challenge is just pre-snap, you know, alignment, communication, getting your assignment right,
06:14and then ultimately playing with technique.
06:15And so, that's our challenge every day.
06:17They do it as good as anybody.
06:20And, you know, we're just going to work every day.
06:22Whatever mistakes we made today, we want to get them cleaned up tonight, get the install, come back tomorrow, and
06:27continue to grow.
06:29So, what do you think the biggest difference is?
06:30What do you think the biggest difference is between Camp Day 5 this year and Camp Day 5?
06:36Oh, I mean, we've got a lot of veterans.
06:38I mean, we're significantly older.
06:40We've got a lot of veterans.
06:41We have a lot of guys that are going into year two in the system.
06:43The guys that came in were able to learn quickly.
06:48They're pros.
06:48I mentioned all their names.
06:49I don't have to go over it again.
06:52You know, so I think, and I said this to the team yesterday, their preparation, their work ethic, their attention
07:02to the details is allowing us to move forward every day as planned.
07:07So, there is no pullback, there is no step back because we put too many bricks on there or we
07:14couldn't get today right.
07:16There'll be some things to clean up today, but it won't be, you know, assignments and, you know, coverage responsibilities
07:22and things like that.
07:23So, we're going to be able to move forward with tomorrow's install.
07:26We'll get tested on tackling out here Thursday.
07:29We'll have a little space.
07:30You'll see it Friday night.
07:31We'll get tested again and then Sunday.
07:33And then we'll get ready for Detroit.
07:34Having, as you mentioned, like you just said, the mistakes not be stuff that puts you back, how much of
07:42that is maybe a relief for you as a coach being able to bring new things on with each and
07:47every practice and not have to keep repping the same things over and over?
07:49Yeah, I think that's a great point because I see Jerry and Mike Hodges, Jerry Montgomery and Mike Hodges just
07:53talking about their personnel, not necessarily this is how we do it.
07:59You know what I mean?
08:00And I think that's really good.
08:01We're saying, hey, why don't we put Dex here?
08:03Why don't we see if Boye can do this?
08:06Let's use this front instead because that's what we do best.
08:09So, that has been born out of this unit's preparation, their attention to detail, and their work ethic.
08:18Al, you said the backers have a little bit of an edge.
08:20Do you feel that across the entire defense?
08:22Yeah, it starts with me.
08:23It starts with the staff.
08:24And, again, I think you guys know how I feel about the backers.
08:27I love them.
08:28I stood on the table for them.
08:30They consistently got better last year.
08:33We are going to be the beneficiaries of what they went through last year.
08:39And I think as a defense, we have an edge, and we've got to continue to have that edge.
08:44We haven't done anything.
08:45You know, we've got to fix some things here in day six, put in whatever we're putting in tonight.
08:50I can't tell you guys, but get it right tomorrow.
08:53And that's really what our goal is.
