Bengals DE Boye Mafe on First Padded Practice of Training Camp
Transcript
00:00I feel like we're starting that process of how it really starts from
00:04to get to the game day, to get to the season, to get into things flowing.
00:07So this is just an ex progression.
00:08So it's all good, though, honestly, to have the guys out there
00:10be able to talk to each other, communication and all the things.
00:14Boy, I feel like I saw you in the backfield a few times today
00:17and just making some plays, doing some good things.
00:19Do you feel like – well, let me ask you this.
00:21Are you surprised at how quickly you seem to have gotten your footing
00:26in this defense and are making an impact?
00:30I feel like it's a learning process.
00:32It always will be.
00:33And one thing about me is you cannot mistake activity as achievement,
00:38and I'll never do that.
00:40For me, this is just the start of learning how to be in this defense.
00:45What you guys may see as good plays, all these things, there is still more to go.
00:49As many good plays there are, there are plays that I can always get better on.
00:52So with this, obviously starting out in this manner, there's more.
00:56You've got to keep climbing.
00:57You've got to have that standard.
00:58You've got to have that growth mentality too.
01:02You all were able to make a couple plays back in, take a couple separate plays defensively.
01:07How does that feel, being able to do that on the first day of the Pets?
01:10It feels good.
01:11You know, it's just part of the process.
01:13And it's – I feel like I help – it helps bring that confidence amongst each other.
01:17I feel like this is a thing that we talk about in the offseason of all the reps,
01:20all the things we did, all the ending reps, all the practicing we did in the offseason.
01:23And it comes to days like this that show you that, okay, this is what the growth looks like.
01:28This is what those things look like.
01:30So I feel as if right now we're starting on that phase of this is – we're setting our floor.
01:34We're setting our standard as a defense.
01:35And hopefully we can keep going from that and keep growing from that and grow that into something even better
01:40in the future.
01:40How much change is when the Pets come on?
01:43Huh?
01:43How much change is when the Pets come on?
01:45Football is football at the end of the day.
01:47You know, that's how we play it.
01:48The game continues to be itself.
01:50You know, pads on, pads off.
01:51The game at the end of the day is still 11-on-11.
01:53We're still playing football.
01:55It looks like you guys are getting pretty constant pressure.
01:58Is that how it feels after that?
01:59I mean, yeah.
02:01We're working on things.
02:02We're understanding.
02:03I feel like right now we're just understanding how each other play.
02:05It's the beginning stage.
02:06It's the early days.
02:07So right now we're trying to figure out how I can make myself play better with Dexter,
02:11how I can play myself better with Jonathan, how they play, how they like to play.
02:14You know what I'm saying?
02:15Me and Miles understanding how we go high and low, whatever those type of things may
02:18look like.
02:19You know what I'm saying?
02:19Miles like to do a high rush.
02:20Maybe I'll go underneath.
02:22You know, so just understanding what that looks like and creating that relationship amongst
02:25each other.
02:26You know what I'm saying?
02:27And I love that even the young guys are doing it too.
02:28I'm seeing the young guys out there going out there and pass rushing together.
02:31So seeing it all come together and seeing that vision grow.
02:34Coach, I'm going to say your IQ, your football IQ really is showing how you read things,
02:40allowing you to make plays.
02:41Do you consider that one of your skills?
02:44I try to start the game.
02:45I feel like for me, the biggest thing is as my career has grown as a young guy, I just
02:50went out there and reacted to everything.
02:52And I had a coach come up to me.
02:53Oh, wow.
02:54Why am I blanking on the name right now?
02:57It'll come to me one day.
02:58Oh, I'm sorry.
02:59It'll come to me one day.
02:59But he just told me the game moves slower the more you see beforehand.
03:03So I try to keep that in my mentality of learning the game and learning things to look for.
03:07So how do you go about taking a good day-to-day and stacking them?
03:11I feel like you got to keep even keel.
03:13You know, the game, there is, to me, there is no, it's never as good as you want.
03:17It's never as bad as it was.
03:18And you always want to make sure that you take the things that you can learn from, the things
03:22you can get better at, and it's continued to grow in those aspects.
03:25As you played today, I wonder how many times this happened to you in a game where you beat
03:29the guy off the edge.
03:30I believe it was a tight end on this one, and the quarterback naked's right into your face.
03:33How often does that happen in a game situation?
03:36You know, that's one of the things, it's like you said, it's one of the things that you look
03:39for in IQ and just understanding the game and understanding small things.
03:42But, I mean, if you play like that, they're a blessing.
03:44You know, so when that happens, you love to see that happening.
03:46You know, one of those things you can chase and make it an easy layup for you.
03:50Frustrating in practice, you can't do what you want to do?
03:51Yeah.
