01:10Well, I'm also pleased with Buster Posey because he's made so many deals that you and I don't need to

01:18Because it's a bunch of names that people don't know anyway.
01:21And we're going to see, we're going to see, we're going to see.
01:23But all of them are between 17 and 24 years old.
01:27And there's a lot of them.
01:28Just a lot of them.
01:29Just a lot of people got acquired by the San Francisco Giants today.

01:34Or should I say six different players?
01:37Yeah, five deals.

01:38Because Killian and Arise went in the same deal.

01:41But just a huge haul.
01:44And the only thing I can say, like, again, no different than when we do a draft.
01:49And I'm like, I'm not going to tell you you did great or did poorly.
01:53I know baseball people think that the Giants are having a really good day.
01:57That's great.
01:58Like, in other words, if you're grading well in terms of your assessment of players and your ability to leverage
02:05other teams,
02:06if you're doing that well, then great.
02:09That's wonderful.
02:11I guess my main assessment, though, is Buster understood the assignment.

02:18If he didn't understand the assignment, we'd have to have a conversation with him.
02:21No, but he could have just done Ray.
02:23This was an obvious one, right?
02:24But he could have just done Ray and Arise and a reliever.
02:27Yeah, I would have been upset at that.

02:29But, I mean, like, five different deals, six different players.

02:36He understood the assignment.

02:38And he did it.
02:40Well, we don't need to give you the names of all of the prospects because you're right.
02:44Some of them are probably going to make the major league roster ever.
02:47And the guys that do probably won't be here for a couple of years.
02:50One that will and will play this season, Marcelo Meyer from Boston.
02:53I like this deal.
02:55I like the general concept.
02:57Even if maybe you don't know a ton about Marcelo Meyer, he was a highly, highly, highly ranked prospect.
03:02In 2022, the 14th-ranked prospect in baseball.
03:06Yep.
03:06In 2023, 9th-ranked prospect in baseball.
03:09He's been a can't-miss guy for a while.
03:12Made his debut last season.
03:14Struggled.
03:15Didn't play a ton.
03:16Played this year.
03:17Has struggled through some injuries as well.
03:19He's currently hurt with a stress reaction in his forearm.
03:23Last played, like, 10 days ago.
03:2610-day injured list.
03:27So we'll get an update on him when that becomes official, I would imagine, from the Giants.
03:31But I like just taking a swing, and you're only giving up Eric Miller.
03:34I like taking a swing on a really, really talented guy who's still 22 years old,
03:38and it hasn't panned out at the major league level yet.
03:40Maybe you find something like the Brewers did with Kyle Harrison that you didn't.
03:44No doubt.
03:44And it turns out to be a really good player, and that would be a boon of a trade.

03:48For Eric Miller?
03:49I mean, look, he's only about 300-plus at-bats into his entire major league career.
03:54So could something still blossom?
03:56Absolutely.
03:57But it's like you're saying.
03:59I mean, the majority of what the Giants have done today is also incredibly, incredibly,
04:05and I cannot stress this enough, low risk.

04:08The biggest risk one is probably Elliott Ramos, right?
04:12If Elliott Ramos somehow continues to become an all-star,
04:16I don't even see how that's possible.
04:18He's going to a Yankees team where I don't think he's going to play every single day
04:22once they get healthy.
04:24Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, these people are coming back.
04:28So, I don't know.
04:29You know, Elliott Ramos is a nice player, and I'm glad he finally broke that stupid record
04:34about starting left fielders on all day.
04:36Oh, yeah.
04:37Thank you, Elliott.
04:37If for nothing else, thank you for that.
04:40But, you know, Elliott Ramos did some good things.
04:42Came up.
04:43He was a – by the way, Elliott Ramos is a great example maybe of even what you're talking
04:48about with Marcelo Meyer.
04:50Elliott Ramos was a guy the Giants almost – first-round pick almost gave up on him
04:55because it's like, dude, are you ever going to come around?
04:57And then all of a sudden, right at a time of need, it was like, ooh, I think he kind
05:02of turned a corner, and he came up, and he made an all-star team.
05:05And he hit over 20 homers.
05:07He wasn't ever as high of a prospect as Meyer was.
05:10And Meyer was that high when he, like, got promoted and officially became a Red Sox.
05:14But to your point, when you drafted Ramos, where you drafted him, and early in his career
05:18as a minor leaguer, this was – all right, this is one of the future franchise cornerstones.
05:22And then he never quite turned into that.
05:24And then right before the end, he was like, okay, I'm figuring myself out a little bit.
05:28Made that all-star appearance.
05:29A lot of issues in the outfield.
05:31A lot of issues on the field.
05:32And the bases, I mean.
05:33But, I mean, so many.
05:36Can't even count, really.
05:37I forgot about that for a sec.
05:39Now I've got to remember all those base running mistakes.
05:41Specifically last year.
05:42At pesky infield fly rule.
05:44He's been better at that this year, if memory serves.
05:46But last year was really bad.
05:49Really bad.
05:50But, yeah.
05:51I mean, I know Alex Pavlovich.
05:53You're talking about baseball people.
05:55Alex Pavlovich, our friend from NBC Sports Bay Area, says the Giants are having a really,
05:59really good deadline.
06:00It's impossible to know how good, to your point.
06:03But, yes, I don't look at any of these deals and say, ooh, they shouldn't have done that.
06:08Like, TBD on who the prospects turn out to be.
06:10But if I'm just looking at it as, oh, this is a 22-year-old, 6'7", left-handed pitcher
06:16that, you know, they need to stockpile arms.
06:19Like, yeah, that was the right general thing to do.
06:21The only question comes is, how good is your scouting department?
06:24And did you choose the right prospects from those teams?
06:27Well, no.
06:27And you build it up because what you want is depth.
06:30Because they're not all going to work out.
06:31Well, that's the secret to the Dodgers, is you have depth so that when a guy like
06:36Scooble comes available on the market, one, you have to have the willingness from your
06:40front office to give the contract that's going to come after the deal.
06:43But you have the firepower to make the deal, give the Tigers prospects that they find
06:48interesting enough to give up on Scooble.
06:51And so that you're still not empty in your farm system after you make that deal.
06:54That's why the Dodgers have been as good as they've been, because they have the best
06:57farm in baseball.
06:58We'll get to them.

07:05But that is the key, depth.

07:09Why do the Giants have 37 shortstop prospects between the ages of 17 and 20?
07:15Because they're not going to keep them all.

07:18Of course, I don't love it when general managers do this.
07:22A.J. Preller used to do this famously in San Diego, and it always made me cringe a little
07:26bit.

07:27Where he refers to people as the asset.
07:30And it's like, oh, that doesn't make me feel very good.
07:35HR or PR standpoint.
07:37But he's not wrong.

07:39Like, some of these players will make the bigs.
07:41Some of them never will.
07:43And some of them will be traded.
07:44Yeah.
07:45Some of them will be traded to other teams, preferably at a time when the Giants, at the
07:51end of July, are ready to make a run for something.

07:55I remember when they used to do that.
07:57Used to go to the World Series and everything.
07:58Oh, yeah.

07:59And we would have a parade and all that.

08:01Now we get, like, one fun day a year.
08:03At the end of July and the early August when we start to get excited about another year.

08:09The thing that's going to make Giants fans more excited than anything else is when the
08:13dust settles on the trade deadline and you get all the new prospects and all the new
08:19teams and you have all the players changing organizations.
08:23You get the updated farm system rankings.
08:26I don't know if you saw, like, the post-MLB draft rankings.
08:30The Giants moved all the way up, depending on what, you know, outlet you're looking at.
08:33The Giants moved all the way up to sixth, the sixth best farm in all of baseball.
08:37That was before today.
08:38Before today.
08:39That was post-draft.
08:40So, Jack, you plug Jackson Floor in there and a couple of other guys.
08:43They jumped all the way up to sixth.
08:45After today, as one of the few real true sellers in baseball and some of the teams behind them
08:52with a better farm system entering the trade deadline, like the Brewers and a couple of
08:58others, the Tampa Bay Rays, those teams are not selling.
09:02They're buying.
09:03Yep.
09:03So, their farm system theoretically should be getting worse.
09:06Yours should be getting better.
09:07You could be looking at the Giants having a top three farm system when it's all said and
09:10done after the trade deadline.
09:12In 19 minutes.
09:14I mean, it's already true, but nobody's working on that.

09:17One, you see those new updated rankings come out.
09:19They could be on some publications, the top three farm system.
09:22Which, again, is the assignment right now.
09:25It doesn't mean anything to anybody until it actually works out because people and things
09:29get ranked and then they're wrong.
09:31But that kind of depth is obviously, obviously very, very necessary for them right now.

10:14going to, next year, you're going to pull out the same thing, you know, with those guys

10:20And, you know, yeah, it'd be great to have, we need more pitching, right?

10:30They couldn't hit.

10:34And, and finally, when they started hitting, you know, yeah, the pitching didn't come through.
10:40But last year, this year, they couldn't hit.
10:44So who do they get rid of?
10:46They get rid of a ride.

10:49And I understand.
10:50Yeah, you got to get, you know, he's going away next year.
10:54But, hey, you better, you better talk to him before you get rid of him and say, hey, we're
11:02going to make a deal with you at the end of the season.
11:06And, you know, when you, when you get on the market, because we want you back.
11:11I hope that they did that because if they didn't, it's like same problem, same problem
11:19next year.
11:20It's like no hitting.
11:21So I don't know.
11:23To me, it's sad unless they get rid of those guys, because those guys are dragging it down.

11:30It's a super interesting point on a couple of fronts that I think we want to get into.
11:33First and foremost, the Arise thing.
11:36And, you know, I've had my dukes up about this for about two weeks because I'm getting
11:40peppered from my mom.
11:42Who loves Luis Arise.
11:43Just cannot love Luis Arise enough.
11:45And I've tried to do my best to kind of grease the wheels for all of this.
11:50I've tried multiple phone calls over the last two weeks to explain to mom how this
11:55all works, why they're going to trade Luis Arise, why it would be wrong for them to not
12:00trade Luis Arise, all with the compassion and understanding of any Giants fan that's
12:05like, but wait a minute.
12:06I like him.
12:07Yeah.
12:07I get it.
12:08I get it.
12:09It's impossible to not like him.
12:10It's impossible.
12:11And I was someone who was against the signing in the first place.
12:13He apparently, and let's not act like we work there, but it's not just the stuff you all
12:18see.
12:19There's a lot going on that we don't see.
12:21Vitello sounded like he was going to cry last week when they talked about him being
12:25traded because he said Luis Arise makes everybody's day better every day.
12:30Like, this guy was perfect.
12:33He was absolutely everything and anything plus more that you could have wanted him to
12:39be.
12:39But there's two problems there.
12:41One of them is obvious, and I think you all get it.
12:44The Giants are going nowhere this year, and he's a free agent at the end of the year.
12:48Would be flat out.
12:50I mean, they're walking away with the Phillies' number four prospect because of him.
12:54A lot of Phillies seems pissed, by the way.
12:56No doubt.
12:56And so it would be stupid, just flat out stupid, to not make that deal.
13:03The interesting one to me is the second part he said, which is, before you trade him, do
13:08you try to wink-wink and say, we want you back?
13:12And I'm torn there because as awesome as he is, like, what are you going to do?
13:19What are y'all going to do with Casey Schmidt?
13:21What are you going to do with him?
13:23Well, I said during the crossover, as Casey Schmidt, you're starting left fielder and opening
13:26day next year?
13:28It's possible, but you don't want that.
13:30Yeah, if you're going to get rid of Elliott Ramos because he's not a good defender, you're
13:33going to just throw Casey out there?
13:35That's not ideal.
13:37And I know what most of your answers are, which is, well, then get rid of one of those
13:41schmucks on the left side of the infield.
13:42And that's also what our caller pointed out.
13:44And I don't know how viable that is.
13:47I don't even know if it's possible.
13:49I thought there was a chance that Chapman could get traded.
13:51Maybe his injury complicates it.
13:53Maybe it means that the prospect return is a little less, or maybe it means the Giants
13:57have to pay a little bit more of the contract.
13:59And maybe that's why it hasn't happened.
14:01We don't know.
14:02And I'm sure he said no.
14:03Maybe you're right.
14:04He has the ability to say no.
14:05No, you're right.
14:06I would be shocked.
14:08I would have been absolutely floored if Adamus was traded.
14:11I was surprised to hear the rumors about the Padres endeavors over the weekend.
14:15I'd be surprised if that happened as well.
14:17Now, I probably would have predicted, I don't know, maybe like a 33% chance Chapman got traded.
14:24But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.
14:26You need two to tango.
14:28And with Chapman, you need three to tango because he's got the no trade clause, as you mentioned.
14:31The Giants have to agree.
14:32The team acquiring Chapman has to agree.
14:34And Chapman has to agree.
14:35It's incredibly difficult for that to happen.
14:37Adamus was never, ever, ever going to happen.
14:41But the larger point is, essentially, the team's going to look very, very similar next year
14:46because you have Adamus, Chapman, Devers.
14:49Well, you know, a lot of open spots, too.
14:51In those three spots.
14:52A lot of open spots.
14:52Pied up a ton of money with those three guys.
14:54And by the way, when I say like those schmucks on the left side of the infield,
14:58I'm sort of like throwing a voice.
15:00I know that's what a lot of fans say.
15:02I don't want it to sound.
15:03I don't think Matt Chapman is a schmuck.
15:05I don't even think, I wouldn't call Willie Adamus a schmuck.
15:08I think that's been a bust of a signing so far.
15:10Oh, absolutely.
15:10It's been a bust of a signing.
15:11And it's not even just like the numbers.
15:14There's something wrong with the relationship.
15:17Absolutely.
15:17Between Willie and this fan base.
15:19There's something wrong there.
15:20And we can dissect that a little bit.
15:22And I know the Ron Washington thing, you're firmly on the side of this was miscommunication
15:27blown out of proportion.
15:28The way that members of the Giants beat and Tony Vitello stood up for Adamus
15:34and saying, no, he's working with Ron Washington.
15:37And what was reported by Wayne Rondazzo on the Apple TV broadcast wasn't, you know,
15:41the full truth, at least.
15:43Or there's reasons for why he's working less with Ron Washington, like a nagging back injury
15:48or whatever it was.
15:49I also think there's clearly, issue is probably too strong of a word, but I don't think Willie
15:56Adamus has necessarily, we see all the outward stuff and the Gatorade and all that.
16:01I don't think it's all sunshine and rainbows in the clubhouse around Willie Adamus.
16:05I don't, I don't, I don't either.
16:06I would love to actually, we can get into that because that's, that's a very, very, I think,
16:12interesting conversation for Giants fans to have.
16:16But there's a bigger one too.
16:18And, and, and so that's what, that's what that conversation brings up.
16:23And it's this.
16:25How do you feel as the Giants kind of rework this, but they don't work though, they don't
16:32rework those three.
16:34How do you feel about the future of the Giants still including Rafi Devers, Willie Adamus
16:41and Matt Chapman?
16:42It feels like because of, and I'll say mistakes specifically about Adamus and Devers, I feel
16:50less bad about the Chapman contract, but because of those mistakes, quote unquote, you're unable
16:57to go fully jump both feet in to the rebuild, tear this thing down strategy.
17:04You're unable to fully do that.
17:06And as a result, maybe you're, you know, more of an average team next year instead of a terrible
17:13team next year, because even if those guys are overpaid, like right now you replace Matt
17:18Chapman with Casey Schmidt and you replace, you know, Bryce Eldridge would be playing,
17:24but you, you, you bring in somebody else to DH or whatever the case is for Devers, you're
17:28going to get worse.
17:29Like you, you can say those are considering the contracts they're on bad players to have
17:34in the situation, but they are producing numbers for you.
17:38Specifically Devers is he's going to hit 30 plus home runs this year.
17:41Back to the baseball card.
17:42He's going to hit 30 plus home runs again this year.
17:44So like they are adding stuff to your team, but it makes it harder to fully jump into a
17:51quote unquote reset, rebuild.
17:53And you're talking about the prospects they're acquiring in these trade deadline deals being
17:57ready in 2028.
17:59It means come 2028, you might not be as fully ready to compete again by that time because
18:05you have a 34, 35 year old Rafi Devers, who's not going to be as good.
18:08So making a bunch of money potentially.
18:10Hey, a quick aside.
18:11How does this make everybody feel?
18:13I wasn't there.
18:14I can't hear the tone, but I would think that this would sort of land as interesting to
18:22a lot of people.

20:12But Elliot Ramos growing up in a different country and being a baseball player and wanting
20:19to play in the major leagues, like, I would imagine there's a certain appeal, like, oh,
20:23I'm a Yankee now.
20:24That's exciting.
20:25Just to give everybody, if you just joined us, the deadline's got seven and a half minutes
20:29to go, but it does feel like maybe we've reached the end with the Giants.
20:34Yesterday, Tyler Malley went to the Braves in exchange for, I'm not going to do all the
20:39names because it won't mean much, but a pitcher is coming in return for Tyler Malley very early
20:44this morning, 6, 7 o'clock hour.
20:46Louisa Rize and Caleb Killian were sent to the Phillies for their fourth and ninth overall
20:52prospects, and both of them are pitchers.
20:56Ramon Marquez is the one that you're going to want to remember.
20:59He is a top 100 prospect in baseball.
21:03There's some excitement about him.
21:06Since then, Robbie Ray has gone to the San Diego Padres for a couple of their top prospects,
21:13including their fourth.
21:14Also a pitcher.
21:16Jump in here if I forget any of them.
21:19Eric Miller goes to the Boston Red Sox for a player who just a few years ago, Marcelo Meyer,
21:26just a few years ago, was one of the absolute top prospects in baseball.
21:31Elliot Ramos goes to the New York Yankees for two prospects, a pitcher, their fifth overall
21:37prospect, and then their 13th prospect, Jeff Kent's son.

21:44And the vast majority of these guys are like double A, single A, high A, anywhere around there.

21:51There are a couple guys who could be big league ready next year.

22:08Willie's complaining of nagging injuries, and now we're post-deadline.

22:14So, and he plays all three positions.
22:17So, sure, he'll be up.
22:19The lineup tonight's going to be really fun.
