Cincinnati Bengals Fight After Joe Burrow Hit in Practice
Transcript
00:00But the story is what happened mid-practice during 11-on-11.
00:04Shamar Stewart, the Bengals' first-round pick, was a bit off balance,
00:08beat Lucas Patrick on what appeared to be a stunt where he cuts from the outside to the inside.
00:16He might have just straight-up beat him.
00:18But regardless, wins inside, is going up the middle, going at Joe,
00:25and is stumbling into and ultimately hit Joe Burrow as Joe Burrow completed a pass to Jamar Chase.
00:31I obviously followed the ball, which is something that you do.
00:35You don't think in that moment that Joe's going to get hit.
00:39Demetrius Knight, if you watch the video, Demetrius Knight kind of puts his hands on his helmet
00:42because you can't believe that he saw Joe get hit.
00:45And look, Shamar's clearly off balance.
00:48Shamar clearly, from what I see, it was completely unintentional.
00:53And yet, at the same time, this led to Lucas Patrick really taking it out on Shamar Stewart,
01:01which I'm fine with.
01:03I'm totally fine with this.
01:04And it's twofold.
01:06One, and Ted Karras said it best, all of our hopes and dreams hinge with that guy.
01:12He's the franchise.
01:14Two, I saw that way too much last year.
01:16Questionable hits, late hits, stuff that wasn't called,
01:19and I was critical of the Bengals' offensive front because they need to be tougher.
01:23They need to be madder.
01:24They need to be angrier.
01:25And when they do see that on film, they've got to realize, all right, we're defending our quarterback.
01:29And that was in games.
01:31I damn sure I'm not going to let a rookie, and I like Shamar, and I'm going to talk about Shamar a lot here,
01:37hit the franchise.
01:39Like sometimes you've just got to say it out loud, and it's very, very simple.
01:41And so for Lucas Patrick, who had a bad day today, he got his butt kicked.
01:46I'll use Ted Karras' words for the offensive line.
01:49They got their asses kicked.
01:51And so that is something that can't happen.
01:56And if it does happen, you darn sure can't let it slide.
02:00You cannot let your quarterback get hit in practice.
02:04And not only did he get hit, but he went to the ground.
02:07And as you see it, like Shamar's off balance, but man, that doesn't feel good.
02:13Like when you see the angle of it, it's just I cut.
02:18I followed the ball, so we don't see the exact hit.
02:20We don't see exactly what happened, but I get the reaction.
02:22I get the response.
02:23And that led to multiple practice fights.
02:25That led to a bunch of chippiness.
02:27I get it.
02:28I do.
02:29And honestly, that is exactly what should happen.
02:35It's exactly what should happen.
02:37There should always be a veteran.
02:38And Orlando probably would have been in the mix too.
02:40He did that some last year towards the end of the year when he came back from injury, defending Joe.
02:46But everyone's got to know what Joe is, what he means.
02:50And that includes Shamar Stewart.
02:51That includes this defensive front that really had itself a day, and I'm going to get to in just a second with other practice observations.
02:58But number nine?
03:01Honestly, if I get too close to number nine, the offensive line should be looking at me weird.
03:04Hey, what are you doing?
03:05What are you doing?
03:06No, no, no.
03:07Like that's part of it.
03:10And that's it.
03:11And so I know Shamar, I talked to Caleb Noe of WCP09 here in town, and he said, oh, yeah, Shamar went up to Joe.
03:20They were talking at his locker.
03:21So, look, I'm not saying there's any ill intent.
03:24I'm not saying Shamar is not aware or anything like that.
03:28I think this was very unintentional.
03:29I think he lost his balance.
03:33You could kind of tell, like, Lucas is beaten and trying to get back, trying to prevent Shamar from getting close.
03:39Like, I get it.
03:40It's completely unintentional.
03:42It also can't happen.
03:43And if it does happen, the offensive line, that is their job.
03:47So 100% on board with what happened today.
03:50And practice fights happen.
03:51Training camp fights happen.
03:52They didn't go crazy.
03:53They didn't have to call practice.
03:54They got good work in, and that work was led by this defensive front.
03:58TJ Slayton would have had a sack on Joe Burrow.
04:00He beat Lucas Patrick really easily.
04:04I think Lucas Patrick, and that could be part of it, too, is just frustration mounting because he's not practicing at that level.
04:10But Lucas talked afterwards and said, got to protect nine.
04:14And so I get that.
04:16You also got to protect him during the play.
04:18And today, the offensive line, well, they lost.
04:21They were the losers of the day.
04:22Obviously, I mentioned it.
04:23No Orlando Brown, Jr.
04:25So Cody Ford was at left tackle.
04:26You had Amarius Mims at right tackle.
04:28Lucas Patrick at right guard.
04:30Dylan Fairchild at left guard.
04:31Ted Karras at center.
04:32No shock there.
04:33Miles Murphy, also not at practice today.
04:36He got nicked up towards the end of yesterday's session.
04:38So maybe this is just monitoring him.
04:42We'll see.
04:43But neither of those guys were present.
04:44Jermaine Burton was on the rehab field.
04:46Cam Sample was on the rehab field.
04:47There were a lot of guys on the rehab field making their way back.
04:50So that's good to see as well that those guys are making their way back.
04:55But, man, the defensive front, they made plays.
04:58There's no doubt about it.
04:59T.J. Slayton nearly had an interception on a ball that he said he would have caught.
05:06And make sure you check out that interview if it wasn't for something he was wearing on his thumb to protect it.
05:10So there were some big plays, I would say, by this offense on the sack for T.J. Slayton.
05:18Joe Burrow found T. Higgins for a touchdown.
05:21And maybe Joe gets that off.
05:22T.J. was confident that it would have been a sack.
05:24But maybe he gets that off.
05:25We'll see.
05:25But when games count, hopefully we don't see because hopefully Joe Burrow is never under pressure, right?
05:30But that's unrealistic.
05:33A couple of things.
05:34First, the second straight day, the offense going to Noah Fant in some different ways.
05:37Chase Brown, big part of the offense.
05:39Jermar Chase had a couple of nice catches.
05:40I mentioned T. Higgins' touchdown.
05:43A lot of team drills, a lot of team periods here.
05:46Demetrius Knight had a really nice play on a screen to Chase Brown.
05:49That would have been certainly a blown-up play, huge play by No. 44.
05:54Marco Wilson had a really nice rep in one-on-one coverage, knocking the ball away from Jamar Chase.
06:00So there were some nice plays by this defense.
06:02But really, the story of the day is in the trenches where the Bengals, they didn't deliver.
06:08Ted Karras said it.
06:09In fact, let's roll a clip of what Ted Karras had to say and then get T.J. Slayton's reaction as well.
06:16Hell yeah. Just be smarter.
06:19It's a great rush. I'll have to see it.
06:21I was on the other side of the line of scrimmage, but great player.
06:25But come on, man. That's all our hopes and dreams right there.
06:28We got to be better, too. That's on us.
06:30But today, the D kicked our ass, and we had to respond a little bit.
06:34We had some fire. It was in a way that we were still executing plays, but there were some scuffles at the end.
06:39You know we can't talk about them like that out there.
06:42I don't know what happened. I was blind to it.
06:44I couldn't see.
06:46You know, it's just, you know, teammates.
06:48That's why I say it was just a lot of love out there.
06:50It was a lot of love out there, man.
06:52You know, everybody just wanted extra hugs and stuff, you know.
06:55That's all it was.
06:56It's just football, man.
06:57That's why I say everybody for some reason today, everybody just needed an extra hug today.
07:01So, you know, they all got up in one little huddle, and we just started hugging each other.
