03:26In Bakipur in Bihar, a seat held by the BJP since 1995 and was held by the current BJP National
03:35President
03:35Nitin Nabeen. Well, there you have a new phase. Jan Suraj Party's election strategist turned politician
03:43Prashant Kishore of the Jan Suraj has pulled off a remarkable upset win. Winning by over almost 20,000 votes
03:52over the BJP's Neeraj Kumar. So that big result coming in from Bakipur. Let's turn to Dathya in
04:01Madhya Pradesh where the Congress candidate Ghan┼Яam Singh has defeated the BJP's Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,025 votes.
04:10The contest becoming interesting as the BJP dropped its former minister Narottam Mishra from the seat he had
04:16represented for three state terms before losing in 2023. The only solace for the BJP today came with
04:23a cakewalk win in Manjalpur in Gujarat. The BJP candidate Satendra Bhai Patel trounced the Congress
04:29candidate Bhikabai Rabari by more than 30,000 votes. But even here, the BJP had won previously by over a
04:37lack of votes. But the big story and the one which many believe could mark a big change in one
04:42of India's
04:43battleground states. The man who spent years scripting election victories for others has
04:49finally scripted one for himself. Prashant Kishore won the Bakipur Assembly by poll, handing Jan Suraj its
04:56first ever electoral victory, ending the BJP's 30-year-old stronghold in one of its bastions of
05:03Bihar. Is PK now a factor in Indian politics, particularly in Bihar? And what does this result
05:11mean for the BJP's dominance over the Hindi heartland? Tonight's top story is on
05:18the BK factor.
05:36A tectonic shift in Bihar politics.
05:45Prashant Kishore has pulled off a major political upset, winning the Bankipur Assembly by poll and
05:51ending the BJP's 30-year-old grip on one of its strongest urban bastions.
05:58The poll strategist turned politician has won his maiden election, defeating both the BJP and
06:04the RJD in a high-stakes triangular contest. The victory also gives Jan Suraj its first ever
06:10poll victory.
06:34The win marks a dramatic turn-around for a party that drew a blank just-month-old
06:40election.
06:45In the 2025 Assembly elections, Jan Suraj contested 238 seats, failed to win even one and lost deposits
06:55in 236 constituencies.
06:58Prashant Kishore is not the usual politician. In Bihar, where caste is a major factor, if not
07:05the biggest one, Kishore spoke about growth, education, jobs and accountability. He pulled
07:12massive crowds in 2025, but failed to convert them into votes.
07:18Clean bowled on a pitch that favoured the alliance, led by Nitish Kumar, who was fighting his last
07:24election. PK did not retire hurt. He returned to the battlefield, took the crease again, this
07:31time on a BJP wicket.

08:05So, what worked for Prashant Kishore in Bankipur?
08:12Anti-incumbency against BJP.
08:15Jobs and education pitch.
08:17Youth anger over paper leaks.
08:20Strong urban connect.
08:22Third option appeal and triangular contest.
08:26Unlike the BJP's conventional campaign, Kishore went hyper-local.
08:31Mahalla meetings, chai baitaks, padhyatras and jansamwaad programs became his political campaign trail.
08:39His pitch remained simple.
08:42Vote for your children's future, not the politics of the past.
08:48Kishore's win has also put the Jasvi Yadav on notice.
08:52The RJD's tried and tested Muslim Yadav Vote Bank has a new option.
09:01Bankipur may have been just won by poll.
09:03But its message is far bigger than one seat.
09:07For years, Prashant Kishore scripted victories for others.
09:10Today, he has scripted his own.
09:13And in the process, redrawn Bihar's political map.
09:19With Rohit Singh and Shashi Bhushan, Bureau Report, India Today.
09:26Okay, my first guest tonight is someone who knows Prashant Kishore very well.
09:31He was still recently a part of the Jan Suraj Party.
09:34Author and diplomat, Pavan Verma joins us.
09:37Mr. Verma, decode the PK factor for us.
09:40Someone who was wiped out in the Bihar Assembly elections last November,
09:43got zero seats, now wins a major by-election in a BJP citadel.
09:48Explain the PK factor because you know him very well, very intimately.
09:57Thank you, Rajdeep.
09:59I'd like to congratulate Prashant.
10:02Actually, not only are we good friends, but he's like a younger brother,
10:05almost a member of my family.
10:07And although I'm not with Jan Suraj or any other political party,
10:11I would like to say that this victory is definitely due to his tenacity,
10:19his hard work, and his organizational capabilities.
10:23For a person who had been decimated in 2025 to pick up the courage of conviction
10:30to fight an assembly election against what was the citadel of the BJP
10:37and the seat vacated by the president of the party was not, I'm sure, an easy decision.
10:42So I first of all like to congratulate Prashant for having decided to do so.
10:48And most analysts did not believe that he would be able to breach this citadel.
10:53Secondly, just analyzing the election apolitically as an observer and someone in public life,
11:03I find it a little inexplicable why the BJP put up such a lackluster candidate.
11:10There was something amiss in the manner in which a candidate was first selected,
11:16then midway a candidate was changed,
11:18and against a person as strong enough as Prashant Kishore to have someone who is a lackluster candidate,
11:27in my view, might have played a role.
11:31And the BJP is, of course, best able to answer that question.
11:36Can I just stop you for a moment?
11:38What, according to you, though, makes Prashant Kishore so distinctive?
11:41You're saying the lackluster candidate of the BJP made a difference.
11:45But I want to understand, decode the PK factor for us.
11:49What is his USP?
11:52The USP of Prashant, without doubt, is that he is a meticulous political strategist.
12:02So if he plans to go into an election, there is, with the aid of the best technology available,
12:10a plan, an algorithmic map, a strategy, a campaign.
12:16I mean, this I have seen Prashant doing over the last 12 years since I have known him.
12:23Not only in Bihar, where we work together, but in other states.
12:26That is his USP.
12:30And it is planned in a manner which moves towards a goal which has been predefined.
12:38Set goals which are then verified at every step.
12:41But is he a bit of a one-man show?
12:44That will he be actually able to build a team, work with others?
12:48Is he going to be able to scale up?
12:51Yes, he's won this one big victory.
12:53But can he scale up and become a challenger to the BJP, both in Bihar and possibly try
12:58and expand beyond Bihar?
13:00Is that really feasible?
13:03Well, in my view, while it is still a one electoral victory which puts him in the legislature,
13:11we have to still see to what extent he is a team leader.
13:15But certainly I can make an essay, I can essay a possibility in Bihar.
13:21You see, the RGD is further marginalized.
13:24The BJP's expectation that the RGD may cut into Prashant Kishore's vote,
13:28and especially the minority votes may not go to him, did not fructify.
13:32The minority backs the second strongest candidate against the BJP.
13:37With the RGD reduced, you also have a JDE,
13:42which is slightly, slightly wobbly.
13:45I mean, Nitish Kumar's absence and the fact that currently the JDU,
13:52which is largely an EBC and OBC dominated party,
13:55which is the legacy of Nitish Kumar, is now led by three upper caste leaders.
14:00Lal Nsingh, Sanjay Jha, Vijay Chodh.
14:02Where does the restiveness in the JDU go?
14:07We have to see what happens in the future.
14:09So, that is another angle, in my view, to it.
14:14But the elimination or the further reduction of the RGD
14:17is both a victory for Prashant and, in a sense,
14:20something as a desirable goal for the region.
14:24So, what is your sense of Prashant's own self-image?
14:28Is he a political disruptor?
14:30Does he have that overweening ambition to become a major leader,
14:34not be seen as a consultant and, therefore,
14:37is that what is driving him after that big defeat in 2025?
14:40What is driving Prashant Kishore to become this,
14:44to take on, in a way, the BJP today?
14:48Well, Rajdeep, to be honest, there is ambition in politics.
14:54There is a desire to succeed.
14:56I have worked with a lot of the top leaders
14:58and this is common to all of them.
15:00But in the case of Prashant, there is also, in my view,
15:05a genuine concern for what can be done for Bihar.
15:09Bihar is by far one of the poorest and the most backward states.
15:13And during the Jan Suraj campaign,
15:15the entire message of Jan Suraj was that Bihar needs to break from that strangle.
15:21So, there is a commitment to Bihar.
15:24The setback for the Jan Suraj party in 2025
15:28made him pause to think how he can begin the journey again.
15:32Now, it's a first step.
15:33Now, we have to see how he proceeds.
15:36Before that, there are very large conclusions.
15:38Because, you know, Mr. Verma,
15:40there are critics who say that Prashant Kishore
15:42is actually the B team of the BJP.
15:44I know Congress leaders who say he's a mole,
15:46that he still has a special relationship with Narendra Modi,
15:49for whom he worked for.
15:50How do you respond?
15:52Is Prashant Kishore someone who still enjoys a special relationship
15:55with the BJP for all what he says in public?
16:01I wouldn't say a special relationship.
16:04I would say that he has worked for the BJP in the past.
16:08But that rupture was public
16:11and has now carried on for some time.
16:13The one thing in politics, Rajdeep,
16:16you can't predict is what will happen in the future.
16:19Certainly, he has no truck with the RJD.
16:22Certainly, in Bihar, Congress doesn't exist.
16:25So, how Prashant charters his course for the future?
16:29All parties almost are accused in the opposition of being part...
16:33The point I'm making, Mr. Verma,
16:35is does Prashant Kishore have any ideology?
16:38What is his ideology?
16:39Someone who's worked with Narendra Modi,
16:40then switches to Nitesh Kumar,
16:42one day works with Mamata Panajeev,
16:44then with Amrinder Singh,
16:45then with Jagan Mohan, various leaders.
16:47What is Prashant Kishore's own ideology?
16:51Very simply put,
16:53there was no ideology necessarily in the past
16:57when he was working purely as a political strategist.
17:01But after he founded Jan Suraj
17:03and entered the political arena,
17:05he has an ideology
17:08which I can sum up in one sentence.
17:12The improvement and upliftment of Bihar and Biharis.
17:17That is his first and clearest goal.
17:20And that will be his window to national politics also.

17:44the Chief Minister, Samrat Chaudhary.
17:46Can PK really emerge as BJP's challenger?
17:49Is the youth anger a factor?
17:52And did that make a difference?
17:54And is that the BJP's biggest concern now going ahead?

18:18You heard from Pawan Verma saying
18:20BJP put up a very weak candidate
18:23against Prashant Kishore.
18:25Now, did you all take the voter for granted?
18:27You won a seat for 30 years.
18:29It's your national president's seat.
18:31Did the BJP become a victim
18:33of its own complacency or hubris or arrogance?
18:36Something went wrong.
18:37What went wrong for you?
18:40Well, good evening, Rajdeep.
18:41Good evening, everybody.
18:42First of all, my congratulations to Prashant Kishore
18:45after the debacle he faced last year.
18:47He has made a terrific comeback.
18:49So good luck to him.
18:51Well, yes, sir.
18:52We take every election very seriously,
18:55whether it is the corporation election,
18:58local body election, or the assembly election.
19:00So the choice of the candidate
19:01was not a factor.
19:05Obviously, we wanted the candidate to win
19:08and the candidate had worked hard.
19:10But, you know, there was a fatigue.
19:12There was a certain fatigue
19:13because that seat had been with us
19:15for the last 31 years.
19:18And moreover, if you look at the by-elections,
19:21several by-elections in the last 10 years or so,
19:24whether it was Phoolpur in Uttar Pradesh
19:27or Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh,
19:29Gorakhpur, which was vacated by Yogi Adityanath.
19:31We lost that in 2018,
19:32but we made a terrific comeback,
19:34winning 62 looks of our seats
19:35in 2019 looks of our elections.
19:38Between 2021 and 2026,
19:40we lost many by-elections in West Bengal.
19:43And look at the comeback.
19:44So, yes, I mean,
19:45from 51,000 votes...
19:48Sir, this is not any ordinary by-election.
19:51Sir, this is not any ordinary by-election.
19:53It's the seat held by your party president.
19:56No, no, that's all the more reason.
19:57We are going to fight back very hard.
19:59From 51,000-seat vote victory in November 2025
20:03to a 19,000-vote loss,
20:06yes, I mean, it's something which
20:08we will be taking very seriously
20:10and we will be fighting back equally hard.
20:12But like I said,
20:13this would not be a factor going ahead,
20:16if at all.
20:17There is one party which is worst affected.
20:19It is the RJD.
20:21You know, it is the entire vote bank of RJD,
20:23which overnight got transferred to,
20:26you know, Prashant Kishore.
20:27So, how is RJD going to survive now?
20:30Okay.
20:31Prashant Kishore is basically going to
20:33occupy the space of RJD.
20:34But having, you know,
20:35I was listening to...
20:36I was listening to Pawan Verma Ji also.
20:39My one concern,
20:40having seen...
20:41Having seen, you know,
20:43Prashant Kishore for the last one decade
20:45is that, you know,
20:46I see him as a one-man army
20:48like Arvind Keshewal
20:49and one-man army
20:51don't go too far in politics.
20:53Okay.

24:09what explains
24:11this defeat
24:11for the BJP
24:13and a victory
24:14for Prashant Kishore
24:15who actually didn't
24:16win a single seat
24:17for his party
24:17in 2025.
24:20Yes,
24:21so essentially
24:21as you rightly mentioned
24:22around 70 to 80%
24:24of the time
24:24the incumbent government
24:25wins the five polls.
24:27So what happened here
24:28is that
24:29two things happened.
24:30If we see
24:31there is a bigger dent
24:32in BJP vote share
24:34than in the RJD vote share.
24:36So the BJP vote share
24:37has actually declined
24:38from 62%
24:39to around 35%.
24:41So that's a 27% loss
24:43whereas the RJD vote share
24:45has declined
24:45from around 30%
24:46to 11%
24:47so a 19% loss.
24:49So the core vote block
24:50of the RJD
24:51which is
24:52the MY
24:53the Muslim
24:54a large section
24:56of it seems
24:57to have moved
24:57towards the JSP
24:59or Prashant Kishore
25:00as he was better suited
25:02or placed
25:03to defeat the BJP.
25:05Even amongst the BJP
25:06the fatigue factor
25:08the discontent
25:11amongst youth
25:11because the youth
25:12is almost
25:131,10,000
25:14out of the
25:153,90,000 votes
25:16of the constituency
25:19and Prashant had
25:20in fact
25:20in the past
25:21when the Vidhan Sabha
25:23elections were happening
25:24held protests
25:25or with the youth.

26:21leader
26:22who can become
26:23a CM
26:23because there was
26:24no Brahmin CM
26:25in the state
26:26in the past

26:30the fact
26:31that there is
26:32a leadership
26:32vacuum in the state
26:34in the post
