Three people including a teenage boy have died in a ferocious fire that ripped through a granny flat in Sydney’s southwest. Smoke was seen billowing from the property as 20 firefighters tackled what they describe as intense and challenging conditions.

00:02The hollow remains of a granny flat. Fire investigators search for answers in the ashes.
00:08Losing three people in one fire like this is absolutely devastating.
00:13It's a scale of loss that we don't like to see.
00:15Police confirming the victims were two adults and a teenage boy.
00:19So we know that a family resides within the granny flat,
00:22and that consists of a 52-year-old male, a 43-year-old female and a 16-year-old male.
00:27Emergency services were called to the Wylie Park home just before 10pm last night.
00:33Flames were pouring out of the windows and any other opening from the granny flat.
00:38I came out and they saw there was smoke first and then the big flames coming out.
00:43The crews fighting a significant blaze to enter the property.
00:47The fire had become fully developed and a very intense, intense fire before they'd even had a chance to gain
00:53access.
00:53Formal identification of the bodies is yet to take place,
00:57and detectives are working alongside the state crime arson squad to determine what caused the blaze.
01:03Neighbours say the family often kept to themselves.
01:06It's very friendly, very quiet mostly. They don't speak to any other people, only the neighbours they speak to.
01:12Firefighters say it's a tragic reminder for homeowners to test their smoke alarms.
