Woman and child dead after 'horrific' house fire at Heckenberg in Sydney's west

A woman and child have died and two others are in a critical condition after a house fire in Sydney's west. Eight other people were able to escape the blaze which engulfed a Heckenberg home just after midnight.

00:00Devastating scenes here this morning in Heckenburg after the fatal house fire.

00:08Emergency services were called to the road on St John's just before 1am following reports

00:13of a fire.

00:15Crews took about an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze with the property extensively damaged

00:20according to Fire and Rescue.

00:22When the firefighters arrived it was a well advanced fire with flames and smoke evident

00:26from a number of the windows, a very difficult internal attack and as firefighters made their

00:31way through the property they were confronted with collapsing roof tiles and very heavy

00:40fire and smoke conditions.

00:42On entering the property crews found a 46 year old mother and her 6 year old daughter.

00:47They were deceased inside.

00:49They are yet to be formally identified.

00:52A further 8 people were inside the home at the time of the blaze including 4 children.

00:57Thankfully they all managed to escape and were treated by paramedics.

01:01Three people have been taken to hospital including a man and a child who are in critical condition

01:07after suffering serious injuries including burns to their airwaves.

01:13Neighbours have described the scene this morning as incredibly chaotic and distressing

01:17hearing large amounts of screaming coming from the property in the early hours of this

01:21morning.

01:22We heard like screaming from like everyone started bolting out of the house apparently

01:29into the backyard and then as soon as I seen flames like my neighbours yard in full flames

01:37so like it wasn't full bore yet but it just started like in around the palm tree so like

01:42spread to the palm tree came up and it was like a small grass fire.

01:47Investigation has now been launched into the cause of the fire however officials say

01:52it's still too early to say what caused this fatal house fire here in Sydney South West.
