Multiple fires burning across Sydney's West kept firefighters busy

Another scorcher has kept firefighters busy across the state today. In Sydney’s north-west homes came under threat from a fire in a park at Bella Vista. Two young boys have been arrested on suspicion of arson. Further south-west, black smoke billowed as flames destroyed a petrol station at Fairfield.

00:00A terrifying sight too close to homes and to children who sat in classrooms just hundreds

00:09It was like a volcano and I was like holy.

00:13Some of the people in my classroom said there was a fire and I looked out the window and

00:19I just saw smoke blowing up.

00:23In Bella Vista, a suspicious grass fire tore through two hectares of this nature reserve

00:29including rings of fire which appear to be large tyres ablaze.

00:34The flames, they were leaping probably about three, three and a half metres.

00:39It could have taken off a fair bit more.

00:40If the wind gets behind it, it can travel at quite a pace.

00:43Two boys aged 12 and 13 have been arrested.

01:06The guy outside was putting gas in the small tanks and the fire started so quick and we

01:15didn't even have time to get the cars.

01:19It forced dozens of neighbours to evacuate, leaving them outside in the sweltering heat

01:24for hours.

01:26Everything happened under a minute so we didn't have time to think.

01:28We were just doing everything in panic and we just ran out of that.

01:31This is the second petrol station to catch fire on the same road in as many years.

01:37Local residents are now calling for better safety regulations to ensure it doesn't happen

01:41again.
