00:00This Falcons training camp does kick off tomorrow.
00:02First full team practice squad for the season.
00:05And we're going to be out there.
00:06The entire station will be out there getting a look at this roster.
00:09And just to put it bluntly, there are a few Falcons that got to prove themselves this year.
00:13They have one last chance.
00:15Low-hanging fruit here on the defensive side.
00:17Guys coming off the injury.
00:18Troy Anderson, Braylon, Trice.
00:20Who else is on your list when it comes to defense that has one last chance in your eyes?
00:25Well, Clark Phillips is one.
00:27Comes to mind.
00:28It's a guy that has had moments.
00:32He's flashed.
00:34And then he's had moments.
00:36The injuries have kind of hurt him at times.
00:38But also just moments where he just doesn't look like he is a guy that you can always depend on.
00:46And I like Clark.
00:46I love the way he plays.
00:48He plays with, you know, he's 5'10", 5'11".
00:52And at times he plays 6'3".
00:55You know, but I'm not sure, you know, the writing is on the wall.
01:01You've brought in other pieces in the secondary.
01:03You know, like the Sidney Browns to play in that, to help that nickel.
01:07You drive to Billy Bowman.
01:09Avion Terrell.
01:11I don't think that Clark Phillips has shown that he's starter.
01:17And now it looks like that they're still trying to go out and find other depth pieces, or they have.
01:22So, to me, it looks like he needs to have a great camp.
01:24I would agree.
01:26And it's going to be interesting to see if we get the matchup out there between Clark Phillips and Zachary
01:30Branch.
01:31Because that would be, that's a matchup that Clark Phillips needs to go win, right?
01:35And that's something that he has to be able to step up to the plate and actually do.
01:38But I'm glad you brought up Sidney Brown because he's on my list.
01:42Sidney Brown is a guy that Falcons fans are not familiar with, but got traded here from the Philadelphia Eagles
01:46in the offseason as part of, you know, basically a maneuvering of draft picks.
01:50And he's a guy in his fourth year of a four-year contract.
01:54And it's one thing to say Clark Phillips is on his kind of last opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons because
02:01he was drafted by a different regime.
02:02And now you find yourself in kind of limbo.
02:05Sidney Brown, talk about being drafted by a different regime.
02:08He got drafted by a different team, right?
02:10So, now he comes here with this fresh opportunity to kind of turn a couple of heads and do some
02:13different things and possibly kind of alter the position he plays.
02:17He's a guy that needs to show up as well.
02:19You know, he, along with another couple of guys in the secondary, you want to talk about on your, you
02:24know, your last opportunity to really make a splash.
02:26That's Clark Phillips and Sidney Brown, both two guys kind of at the end of that rookie deal where it's
02:30like, all right, man, like you need to show us something here.
02:32Yeah, I also, I mean, I didn't list as many new guys.
02:37I got a couple of new guys, one on offense.
02:41You know, you could, you could obviously kind of talk about some of the more guys in the secondary,
02:47like a Darren Hall who came in here, who was with the team before and now came in from Arizona
02:52as an unrestricted.
02:53But if you want to go to, for me, and I hate saying this name because I've had some interactions
03:00with him.
03:01I enjoy him.
03:02He's a hometown kid.
03:04But I, I, I don't know what role J.D. Bertrand is going to be able to play on this
03:10team.
03:11I mean, I would tell you that special teams, but why, you know, I've got Kendall Daniels and Harold Perkins
03:19Jr.
03:20and they're going to be special teams players this year.
03:23And I don't foresee either one of them being cut as, you know, being draft picks this year.
03:29And you, and, and their athletic ability honestly surpasses that of J.D. Bertrand.
03:35And you didn't, you've got Troy, Troy Anderson, who's an obvious, but like, he's also a guy that I think,
03:41athletically speaking, can fit special teams better if he's not playing a role in defense.
03:46So to me, J.D. Bertrand is, I don't know what he needs to do to make the squad.
03:54Yeah.
03:55But he has got to have a phenomenal camp and he has got to absolutely ball out during preseason games
04:05and he will get preseason time.
04:08Yeah.
04:08And for me, that's an interesting conversation because I'm not so quick to say Harold Perkins is a guy that
04:14they're going to be slow to cut.
04:16I mean, J.D. Bertrand, what was he, a fifth rounder?
04:18A fifth rounder a couple of years ago here at Perkins.
04:21That's a fifth rounder from a couple of years ago who now has, you know, NFL service time,
04:24as opposed to Harold Perkins, who's still figuring out what his position is and doesn't have the, you know,
04:31the investment that J.D. Bertrand once did.
04:33But I'm, I'm a hundred percent spot on with you.
04:35Like he needs to have a good year.
04:36You talk about being able to do things on special teams.
04:38He was not good, like to the point where he got benched last year off special teams.
04:43Remember those, those couple of returns you had that were backbreakers and he was on the field for some of
04:47those.
04:47And it was like, all right, man, we need to start doing things a little bit differently.
04:50And you take him off those units.
04:51So yeah, he needs to have phenomenal camp.
04:53I don't think there's any doubt about that.
04:55And you're right.
04:55He's a good dude, but you almost wonder if you almost wonder if you've hit the ceiling for J.D.
05:02Bertrand in some ways, you know what I mean?
05:04I mean, bigger, faster, stronger is one thing to say for a guy still kind of developing, but J.D.
05:08Bertrand is, he's, he's kind of at the, the end of that situation where you wonder what the ceiling actually
05:14is.
05:15And that's why I, I, I don't believe that they would cut a Perkins for a J.D. Bertrand is
05:21because I think you maybe have seen the ceiling.
05:24The thing that can really, and look, clearly a smart kid.
05:28He went to Notre Dame.
05:29You know, it's, it's, it's, it's one of those deals where he, um,
05:34you know, he's got that.
05:35He's going to have to have the game completely figured out.
05:38That's to me, the thing that could save him is if his first, what, couple of years, it is clicked
05:44that he kind of understands what teams are doing and he can make himself faster by playing off instincts.
05:51You know what I'm saying?
05:51Like, like sometimes you can make up for athletic, where you're lacking an athletic ability for your football IQ.
05:59And has his football IQ gotten to that point yet?
