Atlanta is loading up on solid players instead of superstars. Is raising the floor enough to compete in the NFC? The Morning Shift reacts.

00:00I was listening to this.
00:02You know, when the sound came out over the weekend,
00:04I'm trying to decide what characteristics I think differentiate the two.
00:09You know, if you're doing like a pros and cons list of both quarterbacks
00:12and you set up like columns, I think that,
00:15I think two is probably more accurate.
00:17I think Penix probably has greater arm strength.
00:20I don't think either one of them are more mobile.
00:23I think Penix is more mobile if he's healthy.
00:27If he's healthy.
00:28Based on what?
00:31The guy wouldn't run last year.
00:32Well, the one time he did run, which was week one,
00:37whatever happened to that version of him, I thought was pretty.
00:40Stretch Armstrong play?
00:41Well, I mean, look at the sideline play.
00:43Yeah, that one too.
00:44I mean, there's mobility there.
00:47He just chooses.
00:48Like Michael, and the Indiana Michael Penix was a guy that was very willing to run.
00:54Now, he's not.
00:55I get it.
00:56Injuries, everything.
00:56I'm just saying if healthy, I don't believe that guy's dead.
01:01Okay, so then follow me.
01:03Give me the characteristics you think were Michael Penix, our head and shoulder,
01:06or it's easy to prove that Michael Penix is better than Tua, or vice versa.
01:10Well, I believe you're onto something.
01:12Arm strength is an easy check in Penix.
01:15Yes, I agree.
01:17There's not a – I go back to the throw of the pits against Washington,
01:24and that was –
01:26Two years ago.
01:28Yeah.
01:28I just said against Washington.
01:29I didn't just do that.
01:31That was his thread of needle.
01:33That was as good of a throw as you can make in the NFL.
01:36Sure.
01:37I mean, because that was nothing but arm strength.
01:40Yeah, he read the play, but, I mean, he put it in there.
01:43I don't know if Tua can make that throw.
01:45I can tell you I don't – and I'm not trying to knock him.
01:48Who am I to knock arm strength?
01:49This is not a knock session at all.
01:51To me, it's lining up 1v1, and you're doing the boxers side-by-side.
01:56Who has the reach?
01:57Who has the height?
01:57Who has the weight?
01:58You know, on down.
01:59When it comes to accuracy, I do believe Tua is better.
02:02But the thing is, he doesn't have deep ball accuracy over Pennix,
02:06but he has the intermediate accuracy.
02:07Tua can throw in the middle of the field.
02:09Pennix hasn't shown over and over and over again that he is, A, willing to,
02:15and, B, is capable of making those decisions in the NFL.
02:19I think that Tua is probably going to be –
02:22I think his checkmark is probably going to be making reads,
02:26getting through progression.
02:27And I don't know what category you want to put that in.
02:30Is that cerebral?
02:31Is that – I think just getting through progressions,
02:33he's going to be a lot better than Michael Pennix.
02:35I think that's a checkmark in his column.
02:37But I think he's more reckless when he does that.
02:39Don't you feel they're different offenses, though?
02:41Oh, not even close.
02:43They're not even close.
02:45That's where I come back to is if you're with Pennix,
02:48you're going to stretch the field more.
02:50There's going to be more of those long out patterns, right,
02:56where you're just, you know, did longer throws.
02:58Yeah, little bench routes.
02:59Tua, you don't want to do that.
03:00Tua, you want to hit, like, little cross and shallow drags.
03:05Yeah, he's going to want to layer the ball through the middle.
03:08Maybe, like, a 10-yard curl and then have something that's crossing.
03:13Like, it just feels like they're very different.
03:18So how do you mesh that where you can have a real competition
03:23that you can get because you're going to run your offense?
03:28Yeah, and that's the thing is I think it's going to be interesting
03:31to see a number one, all right, when we come out
03:35and the morning shift makes its first appearance at Falcons training camp
03:39when we go out on the field, like, what's the first thing
03:40we're going to be looking for?
03:41I'm going to be looking to see what the offensive setup is.
03:46Like, who's the first guy to take a snap under center?
03:49And what is the ratio of under center to shotgun?
03:51That's the first thing I'm going to look at.
03:52How good does Tua and Michael Penix look taking a snap under center
03:57and getting back to the handoff point to Bajon?
03:59Well, I'm not even that far.
04:02I just want to see if Penix can bend his knees to take that snap.
04:06Exactly.
04:06But that'll be breaking news.
04:08We'll have to tweet that out with a sounder and everything.
04:10No, look, I'm with you.
04:12I think you have to.
04:13And Stefanski told Carl and Mike when he was on,
04:15he's like, I'm not going to sit here and say we're going to do this
04:17this amount of times and that amount of times.
04:20But it has to be a balance.
04:22You have to have a mixture.
04:24You can't just do the same.
04:25The NFL, you can't do one thing over and over and over
04:27and over and over again.
04:30And expect the same result like Albert Einstein said.
04:32Like Albert Einstein says.
04:33Thank you very much.
04:34Thank you very much.
04:35We've made ground in this room.
04:36I've been compared to him before with my logic.
04:39Yes, I'm aware.
04:40In which multiverse?
04:43This one.
04:44Ian also talked about finding guys who could potentially start.
04:48Let's hear that.
04:49We really went into this free agency looking to elevate our floor, right?
04:56Adding depth pieces, but also players that have had starting experience that
04:59could that can start and that have shown that they're able to start in this
05:02league.
05:03So for one way or the other, maybe injuries may have hurt them throughout their
05:09careers or recently or other methods.
05:12But, you know, we're happy that we're able to get the players that we were able
05:15to to acquire the last few days.
05:19Raising the floor is such a interesting slash insightful comment into where I think
05:25that his headspace has been over the last week.
05:28So I don't because I don't know what the ceiling I don't I don't think we can look
05:31at this free agency period and think the ceiling somehow came off this team and
05:34that they're just going to shoot straight into the sky.
05:36I don't think that that's that's what we've been able to do.
05:38But I I do believe him when he says that he thinks they've raised the floor of the
05:43team.
05:43And we talked about earlier and I stick by a lot of what I said about the fact
05:47that you you want to go and not sign these long term deals with what you got
05:52moving coming forward where you're going to have plenty of draft picks.
05:55You got plenty of cap space you got guys you want to stand.
05:58But I think it feels like the past few years we've made a splash signing every
06:02free agency and this year it's like no we're just going to we're going to we're
06:07going to solid solid solid solid solid and I'm not saying any of these guys are
06:12world beaters or anything like that but they've made a lot of solid signings and it
06:15feels like everything they're doing is let's get solid players and if we can have
06:18more solid players we have a good core and we do that.
06:21And I also do still come back to the fact that it's not a great free agent class.
06:25It's really not.
06:26There's not a lot of guys that you want to sign to these ridiculous deals and
06:33those guys that you have you haven't had the money to do it.
06:35Yeah.
06:36Or need that position maybe.
06:38I just think you know I think we looked at it and thought okay if they're not
06:43going to pay Cade Nellis the money maybe they're thinking like I I even made the
06:46comment last week I think about a week ago and I was like Cade Nellis to me B plus
06:50player like if you want to go out and reach for an a guy like I won't blame you
06:55for doing that you know if you're saying I don't want to pay Cade Nellis the 10
06:57million a season it could take and you want to go reach out for that a player I
07:02understand that but that in hindsight was not what was going on it was like
07:07we're gonna we're gonna get rid of a B plus player and we're gonna bring
07:10somebody in we know can also probably be a B maybe or a C plus and we're just
07:15gonna hope that turns out good you know that's exactly how I went through that
07:18they went through the last week yeah I just I think you look at two where they
07:23can gain and draft and they're like well we could there's I think I don't know I
07:28go look back Christian Harris was a two-year starter in Houston in four years
07:31he's a two-year starter injuries kind of derailed him and then he lost his
07:34starting job what is he because Cade Nellis wasn't a starter in New Orleans and he
07:39came here and started what 51 games in a row and became a pretty good player
07:44but he wasn't that guy when he came here he was a role player so maybe that's
07:52what who didn't who say that Christian Harrison to come here and step right in
07:56but then again they might go in and what is a very good draft and in the front
08:01seven as a whole they might find that starter there I saw the Texas Tech kid
08:06Rodriguez mm-hmm I saw him mocked to the Falcons and I just kept looking at going
08:10there's no way that kid gets to 48 how does he get to 48 I have no idea because
08:14he can do exactly what you want him to do I think he's probably a second rounder
08:18from the things I've read I've read but man it'd be a pipe dream to me to think
08:22that kid's gonna get to 48 he is a Jesse I'd take him for sure I would sign me up
08:29and you know what
08:30you can go ahead and put it in ink because I put it I mean I would just pencil him
08:34in as a day one
08:34is he the one with the the his wife's a pilot that's him I don't know I think I'm not
08:41sure I
08:42think his wife is like a Blackhawk pilot or something I'm not gonna claim know the background of all the
08:47Texas Tech defenders they had they have they have like four guys in this draft yeah a couple of
08:51D linemen they have two linebackers I'm not mistaken that both so good so good their defense was so good
08:58yeah well you yeah you watch that game how it played out they could not move the ball at all
09:02but defensively they were they stopped Oregon like seven times on fourth down crazy
