00:07the badass of the day thankfully this guy did the right thing 22 year old dude
00:15it's either gonna be his pregnant fiance that's attacked by the shark or him who and he luckily
00:24didn't run away okay he decided i was gonna use the touch screen yeah that is weird yeah that's not
00:32how it works anyway here's the story of what this guy did from fox five it was pretty scary um
00:42it was like a kind of a shock towards me decory high says he and his pregnant fiance were in
00:48shallow water in daytona beach when he felt something sharp on his left leg yeah i realized
00:54why the way it wasn't sharp because the way it bit down on my foot in that moment of adrenaline
00:58high says his main focus was getting his pregnant fiance to safety when the waves came that's when
01:05they got to waist deep and then that's when it yanked my leg and i had to push my pregnant
01:12fiance
01:12towards the shore to get her out of the way high says it was in a fight between him and
01:19the shark
01:20and that's when it got me and then it came up and tried to get my arm so i had
01:24to push it away from
01:25me and then i ran and i tried to get my other leg it was like gray on top but
01:29i put when i pushed it
01:31off of me it's about this uh same size as my leg into my waist to my foot somehow he
01:38managed to get
01:39away that's when he noticed the damage the animal had done like a whole bunch of blood coming out of
01:44my foot it was just pouring blood medics rushed him to an area hospital where he's had to get
01:50surgery following the bite doctors told him the shark caused a lot of damage and recovery
01:56could take about three months hoping that it didn't really mess up anything important in my foot
02:02so i can go back to work what's your problem what's everybody's problem here
02:08you see you see that on my neck what is that i cut myself with a razor yesterday oh my
02:16god how did
02:16you almost meet i mean i got electrodes on my chest and everything i'm i'm hospitalized
02:21badass of the day i was close the injury was not hospital no honestly when dave is setting it up
02:30pregnant fiancee man realizing shark is coming at the pregnant fiancee dives in the water or something
02:38sacrifices an arm or a leg or beats the shark this guy got one two three four five little tiny
02:49little
02:50tiny shark like i bet your cats would like injure you more than tommy has for sure injured stella worse
02:56than that and she just takes it so there was a lot of blood on that when they did that
03:02first shot
03:03of him you're gonna bleed they showed it's gonna bleed a lot of blood there where right there
03:08i i think it's ketchup i think that's food that he was eating see those on my wrist no little
03:16pinhole
03:17scratches yeah about the same huh look out out from that look out i mean they had to zoom in
03:23so much
03:24on that foot to even see the little tiny mark i'm also calling complete total bs on the rest of
03:30his
03:31story like that he was in hand-to-hand combat with a shark that tried to get his arm and
03:37then tried to
03:37get his leg and then pulled me i'm like it pulled you how many times did it pull you because
03:42they don't
03:43have arms it can only pull you with its teeth and you're only bit on your little toesies yeah pushing
03:50a pregnant woman's a great idea too he pushed her out of the way to safety to safety hey but
03:57if you
03:58do read longer in the story he actually needs a liver transplant he's gonna die he's gonna die
04:05he's gonna relax ryan keep it down he's dying he's fine i don't know it's a little much for the
04:13badass of the day to be yeah i don't think he deserves it i think he should take it back
04:17maybe
04:17we'll make this guy all right let's see we'll see because he is hiking impaled himself on a hiking pole
04:27and climbed down a mountain after that i guess that's pretty badass let's see the story
04:36we'll determine all right is he more badass let's find out from kcen breathtaking view many don't
04:43get the chance to experience towering more than 12 700 feet above the beartooth mountains granite
04:49peak is known for its rugged terrain unpredictable conditions and demanding climb for david safaldi and
04:56his friends the goal was to summit granite peak and make it back in a single day a challenge they
05:01carefully planned for but nearly 10 miles in everything changed i just slipped on some rocks
05:06it was just kind of a freak thing something you'd more expect to like roll your ankle versus um
05:14like have a catastrophic injury as i rolled over i noticed one of my trekking poles laying on the ground
05:23and as i kind of set up i that's in them pretty good huh i realized that the other one
05:30was stuck
05:30in my side the trekking pole had gone completely through david's side
05:50oh my god i haven't speared like this since high school oh my goodness
05:56he's the badass not the other guy okay come on look at that thing yep he still hurt himself with
06:02his own equipment 100 that ain't a badass it's i mean but he was able okay let's get finish it
06:09up
06:09yeah yeah he kept very calm and he set the tone for how we handled it coming back once he
06:17established
06:17that he felt like he was okay he was still talking he was still breathing um there was not a
06:23pool of
06:24blood so at that point he made the decision that he goes okay let's we gotta get off the mountain
06:31david's other friend jesse used a garmin satellite communicator to contact search and rescue
06:36at the same time david relied on the training he uses every day as a wound care nurse at intermountain
06:42health i i think my nurse brain clicked on and so as soon as i was able to kind of
06:47self-assess
06:48and really kind of establish that like hey this is not life-threatening right now um i was pretty
06:58convinced at that point that i was i was gonna get off that mountain and i was gonna do it
07:03under my
07:04own power that meant turning around retracing every step they'd already climbed more than 10 miles
07:10with the trekking poles still lodged is he making jokes that was in him six and a half hours he
07:16wins
07:17six and a half hours to safety he had to climb down with a pole through him it's a hard
07:23enough hike as
07:24it is and you know it's so rugged again the boulder fields the snow fields just the endless switchbacks
07:31and having to do that with so much precision so you know there isn't another fall the condition
07:37doesn't change um he was just so focused and locked in um it was yeah i it was just incredible
07:44that he was able to do it for that long on the way back down brad and jesse closely monitored
07:49david
07:50and together the three friends slowly worked their way off the mountain i i don't think it's something
07:55you could do alone um you know very grateful for um both brad and jesse jesse walked ahead of us
08:03and
08:03kind of set the path for our way back down brad walked behind me and just kind of monitored the
08:09the wound the whole time after six and a half hours they reached the trailhead david was taken to a
08:15hospital in columbus before being transferred to intermountain health and billings where doctors
08:19safely removed the trekking pole he's now recovering at home grateful for the people who helped him through
08:25every step of the journey i feel very lucky i feel very uh i feel like somebody was somebody was
08:31definitely watching out for me um because like i said a couple inches the other way and this would
08:38be a different story so his rib cage protected him it didn't go through his ribs it went around his
08:45ribs
08:46and just skewered him that's tough to see right there it is yeah they don't make that little ski pole
08:55edge
08:56you know like that little ski pole little round thing on the end you need something that's gonna
09:03stop it yeah i didn't know those things were just built like a giant spear that you're carrying i didn't
09:08either i've never used hiking poles so no i hike like a man but he's more badass he hiked six
09:17hours
09:17impaled by a pole yeah i think he was taking photos on the way back and stuff he didn't have
09:22a little
09:22nibble on his foot no he didn't that's our yeah this is
09:27you
