00:00We're singing about the Otley Run and what we're trying to do is bring attention to the fact that this
00:04is a problem for people who live here all year round and have small independent businesses.
00:09The Otley Run has grown when it was in the 1960s, a small one-year event run for charity.
00:16It's now become an all-year round, every Saturday and every bank holiday.
00:21And this has happened very rapidly post-COVID.
00:24And it's had a real impact on the way people live in Headingley.
00:30There's a lot of antisocial behaviour results from it because people get extremely drunk.
00:35And there's also some serious concerns around public health.
00:38A boozy, Luigi and two of the Pigees are trying to find their friends.
00:45Mario, Barry and Toad while stumbling in the road.
00:51I worry, I worry, I worry for the safety.
00:55One is dressed as a lollipop lady.
00:58We've spent a couple of months collecting views, interviewing people, going to events, speaking to people, all about the Otley
01:07Run, positive and negative views.
01:09So people, you know, local residents and businesses, visitors to Headingley, people on the Otley Run.
01:14And we were stood here a few weeks ago in different costumes, interviewing people about their experiences of the Otley
01:20Run.
01:20So, yeah, I had the great task of taking all this material and weaving it into a song about the
01:26Otley Run, which, you know, looked at the issues, also celebrated the wonderful things that people get out of participating.
01:32And also looked at, you know, how can we find common ground?
01:36So this is the thing that's happening. It's happening in Headingley.
01:39How can we kind of manage it? How can we make it safer and more pleasurable to people?
01:43Well, not just doing the Run, but the people who live here.
01:46At Trescia can bring us together. Break down walls and social levels.
01:53Stop organisations, spark imaginations. Let's hear it from daily frustrations.
02:00It isn't an anti-Otley run. It's a, let's think about it. Let's think about it differently.
02:06We've got people in the choir that will have, like, negative experience of the run or positive experience of the
02:11run, but they're singing from both perspectives and they're coming together and it's just been joyous.
02:15On a community issue like this, you can get very stuck into them and us.
02:19What we were trying to do through the whole song project was break out of that dynamic, because that dynamic
02:25isn't going to help us innovate with solutions around the future of the Otley Run.
02:29Some cities like Amsterdam and Prague have actually banned British pub crawls, but we don't want to ban it.
02:36We just want to actually try and find a way of managing it in a way that both brings pleasure
02:42to people doing it, but actually also brings something to the community that live here.
02:47Brewers and pubs are making a lot of money. It's a very extractive situation.
02:52And what we now really want to call for is for everybody to work together to try and find a
02:57way that benefits headingly.
