00:00I'm Sandra McLean and I'm the coordinator of Litterfree Leeds which is a community volunteer
00:07led organisation and we now have over 50 groups over the whole of the city of Leeds and basically
00:15we're volunteers who love where we live we're passionate about living in clean tidy and litter
00:21free communities. This morning we are litter picking on Meanwood Road and this is the second
00:29time we've been here we were here last week we filled 53 purple bags of litter picked up 58
00:36nitrogen oxide canisters as well as an assortment of other items nothing surprises us anymore.
00:42The reason that we do this is because litter and rubbish makes places look run down and unloved
00:50that leads to anti-social behaviour such as vandalism and graffiti so it's a win-win for everyone to live
00:58in safer and cleaner communities. Litterfree Leeds, some of the groups meet on a regular basis
01:06others individuals just go out as and when they it's convenient for them to do so but this weekend
01:12we have our annual flagship event called Leeds Goes Purple it's the fifth time we've held it
01:19it coincides with the end of the Keep Britain Tidy Spring Clean
01:23but it's when our volunteers go out en masse across Leeds many of us wearing our very distinctive
01:31purple high-vis jackets and we're and we're filling as many purple bags as we can and we're leaving them
01:39by council litter bins for collection. It's very very concerning at the moment the number of the very
01:45large nitrogen oxide canisters that we're finding you know around last week just in this small open
01:53green space we found 58 discarded nitrogen oxide canisters it's very very worrying because they
02:01are illegal for recreational use and they're obviously very harmful to health it's really
02:07important that if you come across those you need to leave them by council litter bins for collection
02:13don't put them in your black wheelie bins or green wheelie bins and definitely don't put them in
02:19litter bins because they all a lot of that stuff that rubbish goes to the incinerator and it they explode
02:27basically so it's really really important that nitrogen oxide canisters vapes anything electrical
02:36you can take them to your local tip but if that's inconvenient then just leave them by a council
02:42litter bin we do have a very aspirational ambition we want Leeds to be the cleanest city in the UK
02:50we believe we can achieve it it's fun friendly and it's great to be out with like-minded people
02:56everyone is very very welcome
02:58you
