Woking interim manager Craig Ross speaks on Jermain Defoe's exit and his side's 2-0 pre-season defeat against Reading.
Transcript
00:01Craig, 2-0 defeat against League One Reading in pre-season, obviously a good test against
00:05League One outfit, what thoughts from the afternoon?
00:07Yeah, exactly that, it was a good test, I think the lads needed, they had all pre-season,
00:16so that was needed. Yeah, it was always going to be a tough test, they were a good team,
00:20something like League One side, so have a look, I'm happy with the effort, the work rate,
00:26there's moments of quality, the last few days I've been trying to work on a few things,
00:31see that come out in the game today, so yeah, obviously one of the winning games of the pre-season,
00:37so I'm disappointed in that, I'm disappointed in the man who did the second goal,
00:41but on goal is a good exercise.
00:44You were a quick free-kick, that second goal right at the end, wasn't it?
00:48Yeah, I'm disappointed with that, I know they're tired at the end,
00:51I know they've done the course really, albeit, but that's not acceptable in any sort of game,
00:58so turning back and switch off from a free-kick like that is disappointing,
01:01but it looks something to learn from.
01:04Obviously pre-season, you know, you want different tests,
01:06and obviously you know what you're getting from Reading today,
01:07and obviously just building everyone up minutes-wise really,
01:09aren't you kind of on that plan, sort of looking ahead towards Sutton in a couple of weeks,
01:12really, aren't you just sort of building through?
01:14Yeah, I think they know there's a sort of general consensus around the place,
01:20that they're not in the place where they should be at the minute,
01:22sort of fitness-wise and game-time-wise and things like that,
01:25so that's something we've had to address today,
01:28in the shortest time we'll have to address over the next couple of weeks before Sutton on the 8th.
01:32Yeah, as I was saying, you kind of alluded to that already,
01:34I mean that's something, you know, next two weeks you can obviously really have to
01:37drill that in, aren't you, and get that all sort of up to speed, I guess, aren't you?
01:40Yeah, definitely, you know, we've got a lot of work to do,
01:43we're not a million miles away by any shadow of a doubt,
01:45but, yeah, it's a feeling you definitely have to work on,
01:48I think you've got to improve on, yeah,
01:50and a good feeling that we still like to put those things right.
01:53Yeah, I'd say, we've got those two weeks.
01:54Well, it's been a very busy couple of days, Jermaine's departure on Thursday,
01:57yourself and Jake back in, presumably, once the club asks you,
02:01you're obviously very happy to sit back in and you just sort of crack on,
02:03and, you know, you've done it before, you know what you've got to do, really?
02:06Yeah, that's it, look, like I said, it's been a crazy sort of 48 hours,
02:11you know, all the attention going around it, all the outside noise,
02:15which I suppose today, look, the only thing that matters here is the group,
02:19and what we're doing, everything else, we can shut out and get on with our work.
02:25So, yeah, look, obviously, Boken is my club and I'm happy to step up again
02:30and take charge for however long that may be.
02:34As I said, outside noise, you've just got to completely ignore that,
02:36park that, it's not really relevant to you, is it? You've got to focus on you not.
02:40No, that's it, noise doesn't play for the matches, people outside don't play for the matches,
02:44you've got to play the games and, you know, we're all in this together and, yeah, look,
02:48it's not ideal, but, you know, if it's going to happen, it's good to open now,
02:54but we've still got time to reset and get ourselves in a good footing.
02:58And, obviously, you and Jay were so successful, you know, when you had your spell last season,
03:02you know, 17 points in 10 games, so you've got that to sort of draw on
03:04and, you know, use when you need it, sort of those experiences and, yeah.
03:08Yeah, that's it, you know, we had a good spell at the end of last season,
03:12we've got to look at the good place, we're looking to do that,
03:14the gameplay, you know, that's the thing I started from,
03:16we're looking for attacking, we're looking for position to defend,
03:20we're excited to watch and, yeah, look, I feel those things are to come.
03:25Just how are the groups, sort of, generally, they're, you know,
03:27footballers usually, they're pretty resilient, aren't they?
03:29They just sort of crack on when, sort of, things like this happen, presumably?
03:31Yeah, I think, look, as a footballer, you know, it used to change,
03:34and that happens a lot, so the manner in which it's happened is,
03:39it's not ideal for anyone involved, but, like I said, I think, for the greater good,
03:44and us to move forward, it's probably the right decision to be made,
03:47so, look, we're here to work and the legs will get on one bit
03:51through their jobs and ready to go.
03:53OK, so you've got those two weeks for Saturn, and then, obviously,
03:55Eastbourne next week, presumably, you know, that's a good test,
03:58different tests, sort of, you know, as you build towards Saturn, presumably.
04:01Yeah, look, one final test, we maybe have a game on,
04:04we're trying to arrange for Tuesday, so we might have two games in between now,
04:07so, yeah, look, we keep building, we put our plans in place from now, like I said,
04:14but today's game was about, sort of, getting through it, getting, like, more minutes,
04:19once everything's calmed down next week, we can breathe a little bit
04:23and put a real plan together and how we're going to move forward.
04:26Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
