00:11Heights with my husband and our psycho cat and we pay $2,600 in rent. I think

00:27I do think we pay a lot, but I really do love the space. I think there's
00:31actually enough space. Come on into the bedroom. It's my favorite room because it
00:35houses my desk where I do a lot of my writing. I got this desk from Ikea, super
00:40exclusive. I think it's still there, not exclusive at all JKL. I love sitting here
00:44and hanging out, either doing that or lying in bed with my husband, Bill.
00:50Hello. Bill and I met on OkCupid and then we got married last November, so that's cool.
00:57I love books. I collect them wherever I go, whenever I can, much to the chagrin of
01:02Bill because he always says that we don't have enough room, but I mean, if you got
01:06room, you got room. This is taken from a photograph of my mom from the 1980s when
01:11she first came to America from Haiti. She came alone, so my grandpa sent her
01:14here hoping that she'd be able to get a great job and send some money back home.
01:18She's done a lot. She's really hard-working, and I like looking up at
01:22here and getting inspiration from her whenever I need it, and I'm like, if Marie
01:25could do it, you could definitely do it. So come on over. I'll show you another room in the apartment.
01:31When we were moving in, they asked us if we wanted them to color the walls. I chose coral
01:35because I feel like it's more calming but vibrant. This bathroom is spacious for New York City.
01:40I love it most because it can hide all of my haircare and my, you know, skincare routine,
01:48so that's pretty sweet.
01:51This is our living room. One of the biggest perks of this apartment is, as you can see,
01:56there was a lot of room for sitting because we're very big on movie nights and TV nights.
02:00The thing I like the least about the apartment is probably the light. We do have a lot of pants.
02:06We have a lot of pants, but also we have a lot of plants, but most of them are like
02:09low-light plants
02:10because we're on the first floor. And the other thing about being on the first floor is getting
02:15naked is kind of tricky. If I'm like running from the bathroom to the living room because I don't
02:19know, I left the tea kettle on or something, I have to like do a mad dash or throw on
02:24a rope.
02:24You know, I'm not trying to have anybody look at my lady.
02:26It's my favorite home find of just like street finding, which is a thing I really love. My mom
02:31used to do it when I was little. Bill texted me one day and he said, hey, I found some
02:36bookcases
02:36on the street and he managed to carry both of them under his arms all the way home. It was
02:41like three
02:41blocks. It was 15 blocks and I love him dearly, but they were free and it was awesome. So the
02:48most
02:48expensive thing in our apartment is Bill's standing desk. It's very useful and I think he's going to
02:53have it forever. Babe, where's the standing desk from? Uh, Virgo Depot? As in Virgo? Ergo, Ergo
03:02Depot, the Fargo model? Fargus. Jarvis. The communication is really good in this relationship.
03:09This is our dining room. New room. Exciting. We basically just have the two of us sit here and
03:16eat breakfast sometimes. We'll eat lunch. Not really dinner. We like to sit in front of the TV
03:19for that. This is a little friend that I picked up at Urban Outfitters. When Bill and I moved in
03:25here,
03:26it kind of became his thing because it is filled with his Legos. Bill loves Legos. It was my fault.
03:33I got him a DeLorean our first Christmas together. He put it together and said, wait,
03:37I can build Legos all the time. And I said, no, don't do that. One of my favorite things in
03:42the
03:42entire apartment is this little Lego set that Bill made for us. He could not find a black woman
03:51Lego head that was not Storm America. So he had it shipped from the UK and specially made,
03:57which I thought was super, super sweet. And we house it right here so people can come over and go,
04:02what the hell is that? And I go, it's me. This is our kitchen. Hey, hi.
04:10It looks really fancy, but that was not us. The owners of the apartment, one of them is actually
04:16an architect. So everything is very useful. All the space is useful. We try to do a lot of cooking.
04:21The last few weeks we've been ordering a lot of Thai food, but that is supposed to change today and
04:26not
04:27because the cameras are here. I mean it. We have our cookbooks up here. I don't use the cookbooks as
04:31much
04:32as I would like. It's a great space. I love the counter. I mean, look at it. My favorite thing
04:36to make in this kitchen. I want to say like, oh my God, delicious baked goods. But no, it's eggs
04:42and
04:42toast. Even though I'm born in America, there are a lot of words that I don't really know in English
04:46and only know in French or Creole like Pilon. The first time I heard someone say mortar and pestle,
04:51I was like, I don't know what the hell that is. And then I saw this and I was like,
04:53totally know what that is.
04:54These sugar flour and coffee tea holders that Bill's grandma had from the 1960s. We found the apartment
05:01on StreetEasy. We loved it. It was great. But a bunch of other people were also in here because
05:06it's New York City and five million people come to an open house. And we were like, okay, this place
05:11is cool, but we're going to look at other spots because we're going to be able to find something
05:14else. So we like walked around. We went to like maybe four or five open houses. And then we ended
05:19up just coming back here and betting that we could maybe get it. And we did. Our apartment is very
05:25comfortable. It's one of my favorite things. I think the world can sometimes be really brutal,
05:29especially for me as a black woman, just trying to make my way and feeling unwelcome.
05:33So home is very much a space where I feel like I can just be myself.
