00:00Do you want to be in a relationship right now?
00:01Nope. I'd probably get married to a dog.
00:07I'm a skeptic when it comes to relationships.
00:10Not to overshare, but I always thought my parents were happily married
00:13until they, out of the blue, got a divorce.
00:16Now I'm living in New York City with an incredible guy.
00:18And in my quest to not screw it up,
00:20I'm asking couples how they make it work.
00:23First up, single life.
00:25This is how to love.
00:27What were you like when you were single?
00:30I was definitely really independent.
00:31Just did my own thing.
00:33I didn't have to answer to anybody.
00:34She was crazy.
00:36Swinging from chandeliers in LA.
00:38I didn't like go out and party or anything like that.
00:41I was just like...
00:42I did.
00:43Go to church and go home.
00:44We were very opposite.
00:45I'm a free spirit, but also I came from a different country
00:49with different cultures.
00:51So I came here and I was complete, like in a jungle.
00:53And I was like, okay, now I'm gonna conquer the world
00:56and all the women in New York.
00:58What was the hardest thing to give up about single life?
01:01Being able to spread out on your own bed by yourself.
01:05Smoking in my bathroom.
01:07Being selfish, I'll say, was kind of tough to let go.
01:10Because when you're single, you're able to, you know, do what you want,
01:13hang out with the boys.
01:15I guess with Brooks, I didn't have to give up that much
01:17because he was just like my partner in crime.
01:20So I think in a lot of relationships, you feel like you give up freedom,
01:23but I don't think I really felt like that.
01:25I don't know.
01:26Bed space.
01:27You guys started dating when you were how old?
01:2916 and 17.
01:31So you didn't really have a single life?
01:34No, not really.
01:35She got me out of my shell and I got her a little more, uh,
01:40calmed down, as they say.
01:42He gave me his pomester ring, which I had to wear around my neck
01:46to make sure that everyone at the high school knew that I was Danny's girl.
01:51Being in a relationship right now, like, sure, I want to be,
01:54because it will help me more, like, when I grow up.
01:57So you could use it as, like, a learning experience.
01:59Just break a girl's heart so that you could learn something from it.
02:02Huh?
02:03When you were single, what were your, like, single people strategies?
02:06I don't know if I had any.
02:07I was pretty bad at being single or dating, so.
02:10True.
02:12I would just get drunk and make out with someone.
02:14I have a couple of girlfriends.
02:15We'd just go out.
02:16We would go on a Time Out New York and look up best single bars.
02:20Hers is just, like, looking like this.
02:22Be Italian.
02:24Be Italian.
02:25With the cigarette?
02:26I never had a single person game.
02:28Like, I always have this bitch face and I can be rude and have an attitude.
02:33You go up to the young lady and you smile and, you know, give her a compliment,
02:37introduce yourself, and let nature take its course.
02:42We had Grindr.
02:43There was Grindr, but that was, like, so tacky.
02:45And then straight people wanted their own version of Grindr, which is why you guys got Tinder.
02:49Wait, Grindr was first?
02:50Grindr was first, yeah.
02:52Do you ever miss being single now?
02:55Let's let him answer first.
02:58Probably.
02:58I'm really annoying.
03:00No.
03:01I don't know.
03:02I don't think I do.
03:04He doesn't think he does.
03:06Sometimes my friend's like, I went out to this place to eat.
03:09I said, that must be so nice.
03:11The grass is always greener because it's fertilized with .
03:13Did you hear that, Simone?
03:15Being married, we have four great children and eight grandchildren.
03:20So how could I, I would have not had this.
03:23So, no.
03:24What about each other makes giving up single life worth it?
03:27Everything.
03:29How many hours we have.
03:32I love being with someone.
03:34I love a companion.
03:35And I love somebody I could talk with.
03:37And I had that in Danny.
03:39And I didn't have it in the other guys because they were always out.
03:41You know, for one thing, in college, it didn't change back in the 50s.
03:46It's the same as today.
03:48She's the most intelligent woman I've ever met.
03:51She is funny when we go to sleep at night, when we wake up in the morning.
03:55I love like waking up and seeing her face.
03:58She's so gorgeous.
03:59You get to be around this person every day that's like so beautiful and so kind and so driven.
04:07She's my teacher in life too.
04:09My teacher in life and my teacher in law.
04:11I have like this little sidekick to dress up with and like pick out clothes together to go shopping with.
04:17It's like awesome.
04:18It's like having a best friend.
04:19It's like double income.
04:21Yeah.
04:22I really want to get a dog so it's easier to do that in a couple.
04:25Yeah.
04:26That looks better on the adoption papers.
04:32Being single isn't bad.
04:34In fact, it's a crucial stepping stone to eventually finding a relationship if that's something you eventually want.
04:41Taking the time to get to know yourself, what you like and what you need is so important.
04:46And that can be hard to do when you're so intertwined with another person.
04:49To find somebody that celebrates you and your individuality.
04:52That's the key to having a healthy relationship.
04:55I think I'm going to stay single.
04:58Let's say amen and do the single ladies.
05:02Amen.
05:02Amen.
05:05Kenneth.
05:06Amen.
05:06Kenneth.
