00:00and one of the barrier islands popular vacation destination this time of the year
00:03and uh Aaron Rigsby is there and Aaron looking a little more active than when we last checked
00:08in with you how's it going out there yeah Jeff well it's been a little interesting because we
00:13really have a whole lot of rain here a majority of the day but we do still have some lingering
00:18uh showers and storms associated with Bertha that keep pinwheeling around here and making
00:24landfall we can have some isolated water spot potential along here as well now the big story
00:29that we've been talking about though has been the storm surge that has led to a lot of problems
00:34out here on the barrier islands with erosion there is at least six to seven vehicles that were
00:39completely submerged in water and sand at the very western end of the island and another thing that
00:45we've been kind of hitting on all morning is a lot of the beach erosion that's been going on
00:48and a lot not a lot of these homes but a few of these homes that are along the immediate
00:52shoreline
00:53could be running into some issues if several more of these systems come through here I mean it's
00:58only July Jeff we could have you know multiple rounds of these kind of homegrown systems come
01:03through and if that's the case they go around these areas some of these homeowners are probably going
01:07to be running into significant issues starting here with Bertha and Aaron as you've been out and
01:11about are you running into more people over the past couple of hours as conditions are deteriorating
01:16are people's expectations changing I know this storm has been kind of largely uh downplayed by many
01:22residents there in the central gulf coast because the max sustained winds have been pretty modest
01:28yeah absolutely you know especially when we got this pause from everything a lot of the water has
01:33started to retreat outward and that has prompted a lot of the folks to start getting uh curious and
01:38kind of driving around the island sometimes almost too curious because we have personally witnessed
01:43several examples of people driving through the water that still remains in the western end of the
01:47island and they have stalled out their vehicle due to driving through that water too quickly which is why we
01:52reiterate so much that just because the conditions aren't bad in the short term you just stay hunkered
01:56indoors let the system move past and these hazards that are out and about it's just not worth the
02:02time it's a popular summertime vacation spot a lot of folks are on vacation we totally understand that
02:06but it's not worth losing your property or in some cases in these floodwaters your life it's just not
02:11worth putting it right all right certainly a good advice to play it safe there not take unnecessary

02:21now to new orleans uh as we showed you some footage from new orleans earlier here's a current view of
02:27what's actually going on there on the twin spans across interstate 10 we're on interstate 10 across lake
02:33pontchartrain and uh we are dealing with some impacts here the storm is very very lopsided if you're just
02:39tuning in you're saying what is the deal we missed the mark there with the bubble the storm looks like
02:43it's offshore well that is the deep convection but uh it's a lopsided storm there's a lot of wind shear
02:49out there and you'll notice there's a little zone here where there's less wind shear near land but the
02:53deep purple here is where we have strong wind shear which can make storms lopsided it can keep them
02:57disheveled and there's a lot of wind shear displacing on the south side of the storm a lot of wind
03:02shear
03:02displacing the deep convection kind of pulling it away from the low level center of circulation but
03:07when we really look at the visible satellite loop and that gives us a view of not just the high
03:12clouds
03:12but also the low clouds here you can see the center of circulation coming on in and it is again
03:19a setup
03:19it's uh going to clearly continue to move west through the area of new orleans in the hours to come
03:25there's some big waves out there that stiff wind on the east side of the circulation is driving some big
03:32wave action
03:32across parts of the gulf some spots wave heights 9 10 12 feet in some spots offshore and the rip
03:39current
03:40risk is present for many even far to the east where the sun may be shining uh there's a rip
03:45current danger
03:45for many many areas here along the gulf coast
