Hurricane Erin is staying offshore, but rough surf and potentially life-threatening rip currents are making Florida beaches dangerous this week.

00:00Here in Brevard County at the Cocoa Beach Pier conditions continue to deteriorate and the Brevard County Ocean Rescue says conditions will only get worse as we head into the next 24 to 48 hours. Now over my shoulder is that Cocoa Beach Pier. It's been here since the mid 1960s. The surf is definitely up. We have seen it anywhere from five to six feet today. Expected to get as high as eight feet as we head into the next 12 to 24 hours. Beach erosion is
00:29also possible especially a little further north you go here along the Florida coastline and of course the Coast Guard or the lifeguard officials here are warning that these rip currents could be life threatening. Now we talked to some surfers and here's what they had to say about the conditions as Aaron makes its parallel approach to Florida. We're watching the swell coming watching you know the hurricane track and we thought today was probably a good day to come out and do it while it's still manageable before it starts walling up you know before it gets
00:59maybe too big. We also talked to a few moms and they have been concerned about the deteriorating beach conditions. We've never bought boogie boards for our kids yet here because typically it's not really too many waves. It's usually just lapping in real calm. They're loving it. Me as a mom and him as a dad were kind of worried because we're like wow we're not used to the rough waves. Now as we get into Wednesday and Thursday that will be the culmination of the impacts here along eastern central Florida. As Aaron continues
01:29to push north that very large swell will be a concern all the way through Friday. In fact officials say you should stay out of the water here in eastern central Florida through the end of the week reporting in Brevard County at the Cocoa Beach Pier. I'm Leslie Hudson for AccuWeather.
