Giving one-fifth of the war booty (Al-Khumus) as an act of Faith.

Description:
What does war booty have to do with internal faith? In Sahih al-Bukhari 53, we see the final part of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) instructions to the people of 'Abdul-Qais. After listing the four pillars (Salah, Zakat, Fasting, and Tawheed), he adds a fifth requirement: paying the Khumus.

At that time, the 'Abdul-Qais tribe lived in a state of constant conflict with surrounding pagan tribes. By commanding them to give one-fifth of what they gained in battle to the Islamic treasury, the Prophet (ﷺ) was testing their loyalty to Allah over their love for worldly gains.

The "Do" List for 'Abdul-Qais:

Tawheed: Testifying that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah.

Salah: Establishing the five daily prayers.

Zakat: Paying the obligatory charity.

Sawm: Fasting the month of Ramadan.

Khumus: Giving one-fifth of the war booty (Ghanimah).

Key Lessons & Insights:

Faith is Comprehensive: By including Khumus in a list of spiritual duties like Prayer and Fasting, the Prophet (ﷺ) showed that Iman covers all aspects of life—social, financial, and even military.

Detachment from Wealth: True belief requires a person to be willing to part with their hard-earned gains for the sake of the Ummah and the cause of Allah.

Context of the Command: The 'Abdul-Qais could only travel during the sacred months. This instruction gave them a "portable" version of Islam they could implement in their distant land to stay connected to the center of Islam (Medina).

Why it's in the "Book of Belief": Imam al-Bukhari uses this to emphasize that the definition of "Faith" includes whatever Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) make obligatory.

00:00Narrated Abu Jamra, I used to sit with Ibn Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place.
00:05He requested me to stay with him in order that he might give me a share from his property.
00:10So I stayed with him for two months.
00:13Once he told me that when the delegation of the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the Prophet,
00:18the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked them,
00:21Who are the people, i.e. you, or who are the delegate?
00:25They replied, We are from the tribe of Rabia.
00:27Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to them,
00:31Welcome, O people, or O delegation of Abdul Qais, neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret.
00:38They said, O Allah's Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
00:42we cannot come to you except in the sacred month and there is the infidel tribe of Mudar intervening between
00:47you and us.
00:47So please order us to do something good, religious deeds,
00:51so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind at home,
00:54and that we may enter paradise by acting on them.
00:57Then they asked about drinks, what is legal and what is illegal.
01:01The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered them to do four things and forbade them from four things.
01:06He ordered them to believe in Allah alone and asked them,
01:10Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah alone?
01:13They replied, Allah and his Apostle know better.
01:16Thereupon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said,
01:19It means, one, to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger,
01:25sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
01:26Two, to offer prayers perfectly.
01:29Three, to pay the zakat, obligatory charity.
01:31Four, to observe fast during the month of Ramadan.
01:34Five, and to pay al-humus, one-fifth of the budi to be given in Allah's cause.
01:40Then he forbade them four things, namely, hantam, dubba, nakir, an-muzafat, or muqayr.
01:46These were the names of pots in which alcoholic drinks were prepared.
01:50The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned the container of wine, and he meant the wine itself.
01:55The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam further said to them,
01:58Memorize them these instructions and convey them to the people whom you have left behind.
