The Power of Intention | Sahih al-Bukhari 54

Actions are judged by intentions (Al-A'malu bin-Niyyat).

Can two people do the exact same thing but receive completely different rewards? In Sahih al-Bukhari 54, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivers a message that serves as the "filter" for every action we take. Whether it is praying, working, or even migrating to a new country, the value of the act is determined by what is hidden in the heart.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended."

The Example of Hijrah (Migration):
To illustrate this, the Prophet (ﷺ) gave the example of someone migrating from Makkah to Medina:

If they migrated for Allah and His Apostle, their reward is with Allah.

If they migrated for worldly gain or to marry someone, their "reward" is limited to that worldly thing, and they have no spiritual credit for it.

Key Lessons & Insights:

The Silent Requirement of Faith: By placing this in the Book of Belief, Imam al-Bukhari shows that Iman requires Ikhlas (Sincerity). A physical act without a sincere intention is like a body without a soul.

Transforming the Mundane: This Hadith is a "life hack" for believers. If you eat to gain strength for worship, or sleep to rest for Fajr, those ordinary acts become acts of worship because of your intention.

A Warning Against Riya (Showing Off): If the intention is to impress people, the deed is rejected by Allah. We must constantly "check our hearts" before, during, and after a good deed.

The Mercy of Intention: Scholars note that if you intend to do a good deed but are physically unable to finish it, Allah still rewards you based on your sincere intention.
