00:00It's been a gross and rainy day in New York, but that brought with it some surprising and good news
00:03for the Yankees.
00:04Instead of Max Fried starting a rehab game Wednesday night in Scranton, he's going to do it at Yankee Stadium
00:10in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Pirates.
00:13Fried was initially expected to make another rehab start tomorrow night with Scranton,
00:17but the rain out allowed the Yankees to change their plans and speed up Fried's return from the injured list.
00:24He last pitched May 13th against the Orioles at Camden Yards, left that game with a left elbow bone bruise.
00:31So it's been a while since he's been on the mound, but he threw a rehab game Friday night.
00:35That was his first one. He built up to 52 pitches, and now he's going to be back for the
00:39Yankees on Wednesday.
00:40He'll still be on a pitch count, probably somewhere around 60 pitches, but I think the Yankees kind of figured
00:47why waste those in the minor leagues.
00:49They were going to have to throw a bullpen game or bring up a spot starter at some point before
00:54he got back next week.
00:56So having the doubleheader now on Wednesday allowed them to kind of pivot from that plan and bring him up
01:03sooner than expected.
01:05So it should be an exciting day at Yankee Stadium, especially because Gary Cole starts Game 1, Max Fried going
01:10Game 2.
01:11It's going to be the first time that those two guys have shared the rotation together, never mind, shared the
01:17rotation on the same day, pitching the same day.
01:20You know, it's been a long time coming after Fried signed with the Yankees.
01:24Cole missed all of last season with Tommy John surgery.
01:26Then once Cole got back to the rotation, Fried had already gone on the IL.
01:30So the rotation's really been a strength for the Yankees for most of the season.
01:34But, you know, they've always dreamed about what it could look like when they get everybody healthy.
01:39Now they're pretty close to that point.
01:41Carlos Rondon is still on the IL, but he could be back by early next month.
01:45So for now, they're going to have Fried and Cole in the same rotation, plus Slytler, along with Will Warren
01:52and Ryan Weathers,
01:53as they kind of try to get this thing back on track.
01:56Obviously, they have the trade deadline coming up in a few weeks.
01:58But getting this, you know, addition from within has the potential to be a huge boost for the Yankees.
02:05If Fried looks like, you know, what he's been for them really since the day he signed for the Yankees.
02:10He had a 3.21 ERA this season.
02:12So, you know, maybe he's only four innings tomorrow night, something like that.
02:16But it has the potential to be a huge boost for the Yankees if they try to get rolling.
