00:00Welcome back to From the South.
00:01The protection of historical heritage
00:03is becoming an increasingly important part
00:05of China's development policies.
00:08In Shanxi Province, the unseen city of Taiyuan
00:11shows how reserving cultural memory
00:13can also boost the local economy.
00:15From there, our correspondent Bruno Falci
00:17brings us this report.
00:20In China, Taiwan is the capital of Shanxi Province.
00:24Founded more than 2,500 years ago,
00:28the city was an important political, economic and military center
00:32during different periods of Chinese history.
00:35Its ancient architecture and historical sites
00:38preserve a valuable part of China's cultural heritage.
00:43This is the ancient county town of Taiyuan,
00:46the oldest in the region.
00:47In the past, it was a small town called Jinyuan.
00:50With the development of tourism,
00:52it was restored and transformed into the ancient city of Taiyuan.
00:56This place is closely linked to the origins of the Tang Dynasty.
00:59It was from here that the rebellion against the Sui Dynasty began,
01:03a process that would lead to the establishment of the Tang Dynasty.
01:07That is why this place is considered the cradle of that historical period.
01:11After the reform and opening up policy,
01:13the city was revitalized and began to focus on tourism.
01:16Since 2013, the ancient city of Taiyuan has undergone a process of restoration
01:23and cultural heritage protection.
01:26The historical complex was opening to public in 2021
01:30as part of urban preservation and revitalization policies
01:35promoted by the Chinese government,
01:37aiming at protecting cultural heritage
01:40and promoting local tourism and economic development.
01:47We are photographers and came here with Professor Gao,
01:50who is from this place,
01:51to learn about, observe and document this city.
01:54Taiyuan is a very beautiful place,
01:56with good cuisine, beautiful landscapes and a long history.
01:58It is also an ancient city.
02:00We came here to learn more about Taiyuan,
02:02taste its food and enjoy this place.
02:07Revitalization policies have also created new employment opportunities
02:11for local residents, boosting local commerce,
02:15increasing incomes and contributing to the well-being of the people.
02:25These historical places have been preserved
02:28since the time of our grandparents and even our great-grandparents.
02:31They have been protected and maintained following that tradition.
02:33I really enjoy my work here.
02:36This job has helped me meet my needs in life
02:39and has also provided me with a pleasant working environment.
02:41That is why I am very happy.
02:49China has more than 140
02:51nationally protected historical and cultural cities.
02:55Taiyuan is one of them
02:57and reflects China's efforts to preserve and promote its historical heritage
03:02as part of economic and social development.
