00:14Rob, how was your Watchers and Wonders, mate?
00:16You know what?
00:18So this is my third year.
00:20And I actually had a good time this year.
00:22I actually quite enjoyed it.
00:24The last two years I've come back and gone, never again.
00:27But this year, yeah.
00:29It was cool.
00:30What made it different?
00:32I don't know if spring had sprung a little earlier or something,
00:38but just the vibe around Geneva was cool but sunny.
00:42It's a pretty boring place, isn't it?
00:45Look, it's definitely an industry town.
00:49Last year on my way to my hotel,
00:51I asked my cabbie what I should do on my final day there
00:55because I had to check out of my hotel and everything was done.
00:58And he said, if you can, get on a train and go somewhere else,
01:01which is not like a ringing endorsement for a place.
01:04But no, I actually quite enjoyed Geneva this year.
01:07And when you fill it with Watch Nerds, does it get better or worse?
01:10Oh, I can imagine it gets more insufferable for sure.
01:13Yeah, I think so.
01:14But I mean, it's Geneva.
01:15It's full of Watch Nerds anyway.
01:16It just has more of an international flavor during that week.
01:19Yeah.
01:20So, break it down for us.
01:21How does it all work?
01:22You fly over there.
01:23You go like 30 hours.
01:25We're in Australia.
01:26We live bloody far away.
01:27So, you get over there.
01:28And then what's the first thing you do besides sleep?
01:31Well, you try to sleep.
01:32But odds are that it's going to be a pretty rough first night.
01:36Just stop over in Dubai and then, you know, on to Geneva.
01:40And then you kind of just get up and go.
01:42They've got shuttles running all over the city,
01:44taking you to kind of the convention hall.
01:46In previous years, it's been a case of kind of you get up
01:49and it's still not like fully light.
01:52And you get to Watches and Wonders and then you're inside all day.
01:56And then you come out and it's dark again.
01:59But this year, like I said, it feels like, you know,
02:03a little bit more spring.
02:04You know, it was lighter.
02:06And so, I think just from a mental health point of view,
02:08it was probably better.
02:10Yeah, yeah.
02:10I actually saw the sun during the week.
02:12So, that was nice.
02:13So, it's held in a massive exhibition hall.
02:15Oh, it's huge.
02:1560 plus brands exhibiting.
02:18Yeah, 60 brands and just like thousands of people walking around.
02:21And you've got a schedule that you organize before you go.
02:25And it's just one meeting after another, after another, after another.
02:28And you might have, there might be keynotes.
02:30There might be like sessions where you kind of go behind the scenes
02:33and get hands on with the Watches.
02:35And then you've got, you might snatch, you know, like an hour here
02:40or 45 minutes there where you're actually trying to write stuff.
02:44But it's pretty, it's pretty tricky to...
02:47Because your schedule's filled pretty much every day.
02:49Yeah.
02:50And how long does it run?
02:52So, it runs for four days.
02:55Yeah.
02:56Four days with the media.
02:58So, Tuesday to Friday.
02:59Yeah.
03:00And then over the weekend, they open it up to the public.
03:02Right.
03:02And you have to buy, do you have to buy tickets?
03:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:04So, you've got to buy tickets to it.
03:05I mean, I don't.

03:06Because I'm special.

03:07Yeah, yeah.
03:08There are some perks.
03:09I'm pretty sure the general public have to.
03:11I've never looked into it.

03:14So, you don't have to mess around too much with the general public when you're there.
03:16But it's still busy.

03:21There's media from all over the world.
03:23It's full on.

03:25So, you're in the exhibition hall.
03:27How's it set up?
03:28Like, is it alphabetical order?

03:30Like, who gets the priority position?
03:32So, every year, it's laid out in exactly the same way.
03:35Everyone's got their booth in the same spot.
03:36So, after you've been there a few times, you start to figure out the lay of the land.
03:40But they've got maps everywhere with like...
03:43When you walk in, what's the first brand you see?
03:45Do you know?
03:46Is it Rolex?
03:47Like, are they just...
03:47No, no, no.
03:48Rolex and Tudor and those guys are way down the other end.
03:52Right.
03:53Yeah, I think one of the first brands was Bremont.

03:56When you walk in, you kind of...

04:00Yeah, and their booth was quite cool this year.
04:03Because they've got a lot of that kind of military connection.
04:06And so, at the front of the booth, there was like the front end of a 1950s-style looking

04:13It was pretty cool.

04:15So, it's not as a table with watches on it.

04:18These are like premium, like almost like a boutique, you know, but bigger and more ambitious.

04:26It's pretty wild.
04:27So, they had a fighter jet.
04:29Was there a booth...
04:29Yeah, and so did Bell & Ross.
04:30Bell & Ross had a fighter jet in there.
04:32So, that was a theme.

04:34Was there a booth that stood out as being the best?
04:37Like, what was the most enjoyable one to visit?
04:39Oh.
04:41The Cartier one's always pretty amazing.
04:43They're all spectacular in their own way.
04:45Like, no one wants to be the brand that, like, lets the side down.
04:48All right.
04:49So, they're all pretty, pretty full-on.
04:51Are some, like, substantially, like, busier than others?
04:54Oh, for sure.
04:55For sure.
04:55I mean, one, I forget which morning it was.
04:59Might have even been the first morning.
05:00But, like, I got there and I just kind of was just walking around, having a look, because
05:05I tend to get there a bit early.
05:07But, clearly, a bunch of other people had gotten there early and they had done, like,
05:10a beeline from the entrance all the way up to the other end.
05:13And they're all just crowding around the Rolex booth, just looking in the window, just
05:17super keen.
05:18Is it...
05:18And so, they're looking through the window.
05:20Well, yeah, they've got...
05:21It's like a boutique.
05:22They've got an entrance and then around the side, they've got windows and, like,
05:25little display windows with all the watches in them and stuff.
05:28Yeah, that sounds cool.
05:29And there was a Formula One car at one of the places?
05:32There was a Formula One car at multiple places.
05:33There was...
05:35There were Formula One cars out the front of the tag booth.
05:38There were Formula One cars in the IWC booth from the new Brad Pitt F1 movie.
05:43So, there was one that was, like, pristine and one that looks like...
05:47I think in the course of the movie, there's probably an accident or something.
05:49So, there's one that was a bit beat up.
05:51And then, at that same Tudor event, there was one in the middle of the, kind of,
05:56the hall where they held the event.
05:58And it was almost like a competition where people were timing themselves
06:02and doing pit stops and taking tires off and putting them back on.
06:06You've got all these guys in their 60s in, like, suits, getting on a sweat,
06:10trying to...
06:11Trying to win.
06:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.

06:13That's pretty good.
06:14Yeah, they got it all out.

06:16I could tell you enjoyed yourself a bit more this year because you were sending

06:20In the past, it was just like, I don't have time to do anything bad.

06:27But let's be honest, that's, like, my default setting most of the time.
06:31I'm pretty cynical and grumpy most of the time.

06:43We've saved the conversation a little bit because when everyone gets back to the office
06:46after a big trip, we're, like, having a chat and we've kind of saved a lot of this.
06:49So, I'm finding out a lot of things for myself as well.
06:54I want to know what the vibe was like on the ground with everyone else.
06:58Were there releases that people were talking about a lot or was it just...
07:01Did people keep to themselves?
07:03Oh, no.
07:03No, there's a lot of socialising going on and stuff.
07:08People were really talking a lot about the Vacheron piece and the Bvlgari piece, which
07:16I know we're going to touch on.
07:18And then, you know, the Land Dweller was the talk of the town as well.
07:21I mean, any time that Rolex releases something that major, people are going to be talking about
07:28it.
07:28Yeah, okay.
07:29Any trends?
07:30Like, what do people wear?
07:30Like, how do you stand out at Watches and Wonders on the rooster?
07:32I don't know if you saw that video that John posted of the guy with his whole outfit
07:36was coming to Watches.
07:37You need a hundred Watches.
07:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:40I don't know.
07:40You get all kinds of people over there.
07:41You get people who are, like, in streetwear.
07:44You get people who are done up to the nines in, like...
07:47Do you feel like you have to be?
07:48Like, do you have to wear a suit?
07:50No.
07:50No, okay.
07:50But people do.
07:52I mean, I suppose a lot of the people who are actually there representing the brands,
07:56they're all in suits and that kind of thing.
07:58Yeah.
07:58I think a lot of the writers and media have a slightly more casual approach.

08:05And then Watches, besides that guy with all the suits on, is there anything crazy?
08:09Was anyone just walking around with cool stuff?
08:11I mean, loads of people.
08:14Everyone's kind of trying to flex in their own way, I suppose.
08:17Yeah, how do you even stand out?
08:18But I don't go in for all that kind of thing.
08:22So I just, like, kind of religiously ignore what people are wearing.
08:25I don't give them the satisfaction.
08:26I kind of wear a G-Shock.
08:28Yeah, yeah.

08:32So I was wearing a Boma Mercier Clifton, which I love.
08:36But just from a practicality point of view, in some ways you're better off just not wearing
08:41a watch because you go, you're going around and you're trying watches on constantly.
08:45And so to have it be taking it on and off or wearing it on the other wrist or whatever,
08:50I think last year Nick didn't wear a watch.
08:54I noticed people will, because in some of the videos, people had like a watch on the
08:58right wrist and I'm like, okay, sure, a trendsetter.
09:00No, it's more just because you take it on and off constantly.
09:04Yeah, it's very practical.
09:04So, yeah.

09:10We're going to start with a very thin watch, but we'll take a quick pause and we'll come
09:15back.
09:16So Rob and I are now going to talk about the best watches of the show.
09:19Not necessarily all of our favorites.
09:21We've thrown in some favorites and personal little anecdotes in here as well.
09:24But I want to start with, I think a lot of people are putting the Vacheron at number
09:30one.
09:30I think I'm going to do 1A, 1B.
09:32So I'm going to throw a little bit of curveball at us.

12:30watch.

12:34The fact that they have the fact that they have the two hands up there on the dial, I love
12:39tungsten carbide main plate.
12:42I guess thickness, not thickness, like rigidity is a big thing for these watches too because it's so clean.
12:47You want it to be like a biscuit.
12:49It's like a wafer.
12:50Can you imagine?
12:50You have your million dollar Bulgari and then it just snaps in half.
12:55I get quite excited about this.
12:57You didn't get a chance to put this on.
12:58No, I don't think anyone got the chance to put it on.

13:05But do you get a kind of a close look at it and it's pretty remarkable and surprisingly beautiful in
13:11its way.
13:12Yeah, I think the finish is nice.
13:14Yeah, just in terms of, I don't know, there's something almost floral about it that I really like.
13:20I think it would be very easy for them to focus on just the thinness, the thinness, the thinness and
13:25trying to hit that world record and then just kind of let some of the other aesthetic elements go by
13:32the wayside.
13:33But I think they've actually done a pretty fantastic job in creating something that, you know, you would want to
13:40wear given the option.
13:41Yeah, manually wound, caliber BVF900, 42 hours power reserve, 4 hertz.
13:50It's crazy to me that it's 42 hour power reserve and something like that.
13:53You look at it and you're like, oh my God.
13:55Like 42 hours is like, that's like whatever.
13:59Like it's not an amazing, nothing wrong with it though, but in that form factor, that's pretty crazy.

16:19It's named the Solaria Ultra Grand Complication La Première.
16:22And it features like 41 complications in just 45 millimeters diameter and under 1.5 centimeter height.
16:30Most of the complications are related to sun position.
16:33So you have like, for example, sunrise, sunset, the position of the sun in the horizon, when
16:38the peak position of the sun will be reached and what is the value of it as well.
16:42Then here we have like, season, solstice, equinox, and zodiac signs.
16:45And as you are Australian, maybe you are sensitive to surfing.
16:49Here we have like a tight level indicator.
16:52And here we have like a full perpetual calendar.
16:55Leap your indicator over here.
16:56Year indicator.

16:59And for the day of the week, we have two different indicators.

17:38Would make no difference in your day-to-day life.
17:40But it's just like, wow, that's amazing that they've managed to do that.

17:48Yeah, you know there's some like crazy tech billionaire out there with Apple Watch on saying,
