00:00Some days at the office are a lot tougher than others, but today is not one of those days
00:05because Porsche Australia has created this very fluorescent tribute car. You might recognize the
00:11name, Grello. I don't think anyone realizes how good this GTS sounds.
00:25Welcome to Bathurst Mount Panorama, Australia's most famous racing track. One of the world's most
00:30famous racing tracks at that. Every year, a bunch of heavy drinkers descend on this track
00:36to watch something called the V8 Supercars, which is not something that I've personally ever heard
00:40of. I'm much more of an endurance racing fan. If you've ever had the chance to check out the
00:44Bathurst 12-hour, then you may recognize this car. Porsche Australia has commissioned a very special
00:50one-of-one car to pay tribute to the Manti Racing Porsche 911 GT3R driven by this guy,
00:57Matt Campbell. And he didn't just putt around the Bathurst 12-hour and get his hours in. He won it
01:00twice, and he was driving Grello, and it came in these fluorescent colors. And that's not all because
01:06there's a purple mirror cap, a bunch of carbon fiber, heaps of gloss black, and you haven't even
01:10seen the seats. So let's check it out. We're starting at the back of the car. This GTS has the
01:15aero package, which is very GT3-esque. You get the Porsche logo here in white, contrasting black
01:20on the wing. And I think it kind of contrasts with the overall look of the car. If this was
01:24all green,
01:24it would be very, very aggressive. The small little details I want to make note of. Carbon fiber up
01:30here, purple mirror caps to match the racing car, as is this white Porsche banner strip across the
01:35window. Of course, you can't ignore the fluorescent colors of this car. It's painter-sample green
01:39with speed yellow detailing on the roof, the bonnet, down the side of the car, on the stripes,
01:45and then on the wheels. Gloss black with the speed yellow around the outside of them. PCCB brakes,
01:50they're some of the biggest brakes that I've honestly ever seen in any car here on a GTS.
01:54Finished in speed yellow. Small, more details. Tinted headlights. LED matrix headlights. It's the
01:59little things that you can get at exclusive manufacturer. And then, of course, gloss black front
02:04lip and front bumper to match that rear wing. And I think the back of the car is one of
02:09the
02:09992.2's best angles width. This full-length LED light bar. You're greeted by two things.
02:16Sunderwunsk, which tells you that you've spent a great deal of money on this car and have something
02:19that is pretty much one of one. Matt Campbell's logo. Then you jump inside into these very special
02:25body form carbon fiber bucket seats. I'm not going to show you how I get in because it's not pretty,
02:30so cut that bit.
02:35So when you go through these programs, you can almost have anything you want. And this is
02:39a showcase of just how far you can push things because these carbon fiber body form seats that
02:45are fixed back and only slide forward and back on a rail have special stitching up here with
02:50Batist on it. And it matches the exterior colors of the car with the speed yellow and the painter sample
02:56green. It's pretty serious, but it's a very cool feature. You'll notice generally around the cabin of
03:01the car, heaps of speed yellow stitching and race text. This is definitely leaning very, very track
03:06focus, obviously, with these body form seats. But it's the things you start to notice. You see it on
03:11the seat belt first, but down here on the seats, it continues. Up here on the dash, you get that
03:16stitching. And the one that I love the most that tells you that this is a pretty seriously spec car
03:20is the glove box. Race text, including the cup holder is finishing race text as well, which is
03:29something that I've never really seen in a Porsche. I've also never seen them wrap these AC vents with
03:35stitching in race text. I mean, the levels at which you can push customization in these cars is pretty
03:41phenomenal. The vents, controversial, but when I saw them in the press shots, I was really not sure.
03:47Here in person, it pops. You can tell that it's paint. It's not just like someone's put a sticker
03:51on it. It's a really high gloss finish, and it looks great here on the vents. And it continues
03:55onto the steering wheel. So you've got carbon fiber finish here, race text wheel. I think it's
04:00something that you have to get in any 911 or any real Porsche, to be honest, for that matter.
04:04I'm going to keep saying race text. It's on the roof. It's on the vanity mirrors up here and sun
04:09visors. You've got speed yellow on the clock. I mean, everywhere you look, this car has been
04:13thought about and thoughtfully curated to really lean into that Grello personality that it has.
04:19But does it have a Grello personality when we drive it around Baptist? I think we need to find out.
04:26So now we're jumping into Grello, and thankfully, I fit in these body form seats because
04:34they're body forming. You don't actually get a say in how big they are. The car really chills out when
04:39you're driving around town. And I think it's pretty cool how it has a bit of a split personality,
04:44this car, even more so than a standard GTS. But let's head on to the track.
04:49And now we're on the track here at Bathurst Mount Panorama, coming into the final corner at a whopping
04:5545 kilometers an hour. Why? Because for every other day of the year that this isn't being used as a
05:01racetrack, it's a public road with a 60 kilometer hour speed limit. And there's not many places in the
05:06world you can say that I can drive a racetrack every day on my morning commute if you've lived
05:12out here. I think that's pretty cool. We are going to get to some better roads soon, and I'll show
05:16you
05:17a little bit of the performance capability of this GTS model. But I did just want to do a lap
05:21here and
05:22talk about a little bit of my experiences here watching the Manti racing car drive around, my
05:27experiences having driven GTS T-Hybrid 911s for thousands of kilometers at this point, and just have
05:33a little bit of a chat before we find those better roads. So I remember coming here to watch the
05:38Bathurst 12-hour, standing against that fence just over there, and hearing all these cars flying up
05:43this sort of second straight after turn one, which is the one that goes up the hill, a very famous
05:48one
05:48for overtaking before you get to corner two. And I remember hearing all these AMGs and the V8s, and you
05:53hear a lot of cars that kind of sound the same. I mean, the Audis that used to run here
05:56with the V10s
05:57were particularly special. The Benleys had this amazing soundtrack, which is unlike anything I ever heard.
06:02Until I heard the 911 GT3R, as we go over the bump here, that's great, driven by Matt Campbell.
06:09That car sounds phenomenal, and I think that's such an important part of motor racing, is hearing
06:12things that sound different, and that's something that I really appreciate. About endurance racing
06:16like the Bathurst 12-hour is hearing all the different engines. I think as a motorsport fan or a car
06:21fan in
06:21general, that's pretty special. And now having spent a lot of time in 911 GTS models, I want to touch
06:26on
06:26why I think this is the best daily driving 911 ever. So if you calculate that, it's the best
06:32daily driving sports car ever that's made to become the best daily driving, best daily driving sports
06:38car ever. Make a lot of sense? It's good. So to boil it down, there's a giant electric turbocharger
06:44on this engine. That's the simplest way to put it. There's also another electric motor in the gearbox,
06:49but let's focus on the giant electric turbocharger because it's providing a lot of the torque down low.
06:55So as we're coming up the hill here, a whopping 45 kilometers an hour. That's what you're flying. The cars
07:01are probably doing four times that speed, probably five or six. There is so much torque in this engine.
07:07We're sitting here at 1500 RPM, 45 kilometers an hour in fourth gear. The thing's barely turning over
07:13and has so much torque. And what that means in simple terms is drivability. You don't have to
07:18wring the guts out of it or wring its neck just to have a little bit of fun getting around
07:24town. So
07:25through this corner here, we're going to do a massive acceleration pull from 45 to 60 kilometers an hour
07:29in fourth gear at 1200 RPM. I mean, if that doesn't give you a little bit of an idea about
07:36what this car
07:36can actually do and the amount of torque and performance it has, then nothing will.
07:41I think cars like this that drive around town as well as they drive at speed is just so impressive.
07:46And that's what this new T-Hybrid system does in these GTS models. So coming across Brock Skyline
07:52is particularly special because when you come and watch the Bathurst 12 hour, it's a really hard
07:55decision. Do I watch it from the start? Do I come up here to the top of the hill? I
08:00think coming to the
08:00top of the hill and watching the cars come through Brock Skyline at this time of day when it starts
08:05at 5am
08:05in the morning and the sun's rising and the drivers are having a really hard time seeing because the
08:10sun's coming up over the hill, it makes for a very serious spectacle and a very special place to watch
08:15motor racing in Australia. And if you have the chance, make sure you come back and check out
08:20Grello. And I think my favorite part of the track is coming down the hill where the car is just
08:25so on
08:26edge. You really get a good feel for what that front end is doing. It has these amazing blinds,
08:32tight, you know, tightening corners like this one right here, but you can really set the car up
08:37in such a way that you can launch yourself out of them, especially being downhill and having that
08:41extra momentum. Pretty special.
08:46So here we are on some better roads in Grello and you can tell that I'm already smiling a heck
08:51of a lot
08:51more because it's pretty special when you're behind the wheel of a one-on-one Porsche. In this spec,
08:56on these roads, it doesn't get much better than this. What do you need to know? Well, the hybrid
09:02model, we talked about its daily driving capabilities, but I want to stress that this is
09:06a performance hybrid in every single sense of the word. They haven't skipped any corners here in terms
09:13of making this as fast a car as you can pretty much get. The 911 for a long time was
09:19always kind
09:20of seen as a sports car, but quite frankly, with this hybrid system, I kind of want to throw it
09:24into the supercar category because 393-ish kilowatts, that's what Porsche says and we know
09:30how Porsche does a little bit of a fib about power sometimes, but it is seriously fast. This car is
09:36quite mental. We get out of normal mode, across into Sport and then Sport Plus, you really hear
09:44that engine. It's very four litre flat six-ish, then you can lock it into manual down here in the
09:49middle. In Sport Plus, the car is very well planted and you can hear a lot more of that engine
09:56because
09:56there's no rear seats in the back.
10:08It sounds unreal. I mean, the sound out of this car.
10:14You'd have to be driving a GT3 RS or something that's four litre with an exhaust to find a car
10:21that sounds this good. It's unreal. It does amaze me how you can take a car like this,
10:26which is such a great daily driver, grab a few gears and just...
10:35And then you get the blow off. There's not many Porsches that sound this good that aren't
10:40GTs. And it is quick. This car is very, very quick. The steering feel is just Porsche,
10:47in a nutshell, it's exceptional. The best e-pass system on the market, it still is.
10:53This car, it seems like it has a little bit more of an aggressive front canvas setup because it is
10:59fast and very conversational through the steering wheel. I mean, you really know what the front of
11:04this car is doing. I can't get over the sound though. This car sounds particularly good.
11:15I don't even think I have to talk much. You know, it drives amazing. It's a Porsche.
11:23Even through that bump there, it's so composed. So we know the steering is great. Suspension,
11:28even sitting here in Sport Plus, which is the most aggressive mode that this car can be put in.
11:32It's compliant over these roads. I mean, these are fairly smooth, but quite atypical Australian
11:37back rows. And this car just attacks them. Wow. Man, does this car sound good.
11:51Far out. We were just driving this car on Bathurst at 60 kilometers an hour is kind of painful to
11:59think
11:59about, to be honest. I want to quickly touch on where this car sits in the Porsche lineup. So
12:04the entry level Porsche is now basically at the same level as the previous generation GTS
12:09in terms of general power output and capability. The GTS has now jumped up to what can only be described
12:17as 911 turbo levels of performance. You're talking low three seconds, zero to 100 kilometers an hour.
12:27And it feels it. I wouldn't even know that there's an electric motor there, except for the fact that it's
12:31torque filling so much that there's just no lag. I mean, I'm sitting here in fourth gear.
12:36I'm going to go fifth gear, 3000 RPM, feet of power, and it just takes off. I mean,
12:40you'd never find that in a 911 before.
12:44But then when you do work the engine out, four and a half,
12:51it screams like a four liter flat six, but it's only a 3.6 and it has a turbocharger. I
12:56mean,
12:56it's mind blowing how they've made this car sound so good. This is the most extreme GTS that I've driven.
13:03And I love the way you can take it here. I love the way you can
13:07touch, if not exceed, GT3 levels with the GTS. And then you put it back into normal mode,
13:14cruise around, put the PDK back into automatic, and you're in a 911. But you're in the best daily
13:22driving car ever and the best daily driving version of it that they've ever made.
13:26I mean, it's flabbergasting, quite frankly, but I'm going to put it back into Sport Plus and hit this
13:32manual button here on the PDK. And then figure this car out a little bit more.
13:40Rebs all the way out, seven and a half thousand.
13:43Man, and you get the blow off. The blow off sound is so cool. You don't necessarily expect it when
13:48it
13:48has an electric turbocharger, but the compressor surge is great. You can hear it coming on boost.
13:55It's a big turbo. Wow. Even over that bump there, so composed.
14:02Man, this car is so impressive.
14:07Oh my God.
14:12I'll tell you what, this car will give a GT3 a run for its money.
14:22The way it opens up at the top end is so four-litre-like.
14:27And it is planted. Look at this.
14:32It's got these little sniffs of turbochargers, see how down the back.
14:38Oh man, the way it opens up after the six and a half thousand is just silly.
14:44There.
14:47Wow. It's so cool because it sounds like a four-litre car, very similar. It almost sounds like a
14:52hot-rotted four-litre car, like a bored-out four and a half litre. But you get the turbocharger
14:58sniffs, which just add to it. It's just so visceral. And the sound is just...
15:04I mean, listen to that.
15:12I don't think anyone realises how good this GTS sounds.
15:19Maybe it's just this car. I don't know.
15:22Maybe they've played around with things at Sonderwunsk. I don't know.
15:28Of course, the PCCBs. I haven't had to use them much on this road, but
15:32they need no real introduction. They're very, very grippy.
15:38All right. That's it for the 911 Grello GCST Hybrid. I think it's about time
15:46to give you my final thoughts and my verdict on this car.
15:50So that's it for Grello. What is my final verdict on this car? Well, they've basically taken
15:56the best daily driver that exists on the planet, which is the 911 GTST Hybrid.
16:01Then they've just made it extreme in every single way. I guess it matches the extremity
16:06of that race car. The painter sample, the wing, the brakes, the interior, which is unlike honestly
16:12any 911 that I've ever seen previously. It's just so over the top, but it kind of is a fitting
16:17tribute
16:17to this famous Grello 911 GT3R, who we've seen at the Bathurst 12R on many occasions.
