On September 8th, 2024, a Malaysian bird trapper named Muhamed Zaki was killed by a sun bear near his home in Malaysia — one of the most shocking sun bear attacks ever recorded. The attacker was the world's smallest bear. The Sun Bear, or Helarctos malayanus, is the most dangerous and underestimated predator in Southeast Asia. Despite being the smallest bear species on earth, the sun bear has a bite force stronger than a jaguar, claws that rip through hardwood, and has been documented killing full-grown tigers. In 2023, a sun bear named Angela went viral after zoo visitors refused to believe she was real — triggering one of the strangest wildlife stories of the year. And in 1868, a hunter in Indonesia found a dead tiger and a dead sun bear still locked in each other's grip after a fight to the death. This is the real sun bear — and it's nothing like what you've been told.
