00:0039 97 97 uh okay so look um we're in that weird void you know post otas pre-training camp
00:11nobody's really locked into a football mood unless you're football year-round which is fine but
00:16you know how it gets when you move through the summer and you start to like the days start to
00:21get maybe a little bit shorter or the weather cools off and you start to realize that football
00:26is right around the corner at least you know things like media days and college football and
00:32hey next week our otas and you get announcements coming out about how you get your passes to go to
00:37training camp and all that stuff it's still like a month off a month and a half off good yeah
00:43i mean
00:44look summers in michigan are great don't wish them away but one of the great things about the end of
00:48summer is it's the beginning of football and this is such a great football state um but with that said
00:53interesting from mike florio pro football talk uh recently on a podcast was talking about the how
01:00the lions have not signed jameer gibbs and here's what he had to say about it
01:12you
01:13you
01:16you
01:18you
01:19you
01:25you
01:27you
01:27you
02:34He's under contract, so I disagree with that statement.
02:38Well, people hold out.
02:40Yeah, and I hate when people hold out because you're under contract.
02:43You honor the contract that you're playing under at this point.
02:47I don't think there's any danger of the Lions failing to get a deal done with Jameer Gibbs.
02:54I think it's just a blinking contest who's going to sign a deal first, be John Robinson or Jameer Gibbs.
02:58They're both going to sign with the respective teams and giving advice to not participate while he's still technically under
03:06contract for the next year.
03:08Yeah, I have an issue with that.
03:09So the highest cap hit of a running back in the NFL right now is Jonathan Taylor at 15.562
03:19million.
03:22Now, when it comes to cap hit or the average annual value, things can be a little bit manipulated.
03:28Does it have to?
03:29Does he have to make north of 20?
03:32I think it feels like a pretty big jump.
03:35Well, I would say yes, absolutely, because first of all, I've always stuck up, stick up for the running backs
03:41because I think running backs are woefully underpaid for what they do.
03:46And when you look at the production you get from Jameer Gibbs as a runner and receiver, this is a
03:53guy who's 2,000 yards from scrimmage.
03:55Pay him like he's a 2,000 yard guy, which means, yes, it needs to be a two.
04:01Lucky it's not a three in front of it.
04:03There's workarounds because Saquon Barkley signed a two-year $41.2 million contract.
04:08Okay, his cap hit, though, is the highest it will be is in two seasons when it's 17.364.
04:17So you can work around sort of the cap hit value with the way you structure said contract and voidable
04:25years.
04:25He's got one, two, three, four voidable years on the end of this thing.
04:30So, I mean, you've got to structure it in such a way that it takes up the least amount of
04:37cap room as possible, but also make the client happy.
04:42There are reports, and it has been discussed, and it's no shock when David Montgomery was like, oh, that Jameer
04:49Gibbs is going to get a larger workload moving forward.
04:57And there is something to be said.
05:00We talk about the data with edge rushers all the time.
05:02There's something to be said for the number of carries, the number of hits, that running backs can typically tape
05:08before there is start to have, you know, the quality of return on said running back starts to decline.
05:17That there's a shelf life for running backs.
05:19Yeah, without question.
05:20And if I were the Lions and want to get something done quickly, I'd offer somewhere in the range of,
05:26at 20 a year, at four years, and give them like $85 million, somewhere in there.
05:32Is there a world where the Lions make the business decision not to sign him or not offer him a
05:41contract and just franchise him?
05:43I don't think so.
05:46I mean, you could, because he's under contract for this upcoming season and next year, right?
05:53This is the fourth year.
05:54So, I mean, they don't have to do anything until after year five.
05:57Club option for next year.
05:58Yeah, so I'm not sure.
06:00I mean, look, I don't know what the cap situation is with this team, and cap is manipulated like crazy.
06:05It goes up every year.
06:06They have a way from a grip on what's going on there than I would.
06:11I typically would lean towards, I'll wait and see, particularly the running back, because they do get hurt.
06:18Because guys are literally trying to take out their legs at every chance they get.
06:23So, the injury rate is huge, and the risk is massive.
06:27So, I'm not likely, me personally, I'm not likely to give them a contract right now.
06:32I'd wait until the end of the year.
06:35And it might cost you more.
06:37You know, let's say that B. John Robinson signs his deal now.
06:41And then I know I'm going to have to pay, I'm going to have to beat that contract at the
06:44end of the year.
06:45Kang, what do you make of this?
06:47Advice from Florio that he should hold out.
06:49Yeah, well, Florio's looking at it from the player perspective, and I totally understand that.
06:53I mean, football's a violent game.
06:55Your career can end at any moment.
06:57With that being said, I think the Lions, just judging by what they've done historically,
07:01they like to get ahead of these things.
07:03I would not be shocked at all if they were able to get a deal done before the season started,
07:07because they are so progressive.
07:09And, you know, Brad Holmes always talks about sustainability and keeping one eye on the future.
07:14I think this is part of that.
07:15Like, his next contract is going to be 20-plus million a year.
07:19It just is.
07:20And he's not Jack Campbell.
07:21What Jack Campbell did, honestly, is like one in a million type thing.
07:25No guy walks into a room and says, just pay me near the top.
07:28Most guys go walk in the room and go, pay me the top, you know?
07:31And Jameer Gibbs has that argument.
07:33He has that resume.
07:34He has all the ammunition he needs to say, I should be the highest paid running back in the league.
07:38And I think when the contract's done, he will be the highest paid running back in the league
07:42until B. John Robinson or somebody else beats him.
07:45I mean, A. Chan and Brees Hall just signed $15, $16 million per year deals.
07:50There's no way Jameer Gibbs is in.
07:52He's ahead of those guys.
07:54Absolutely.
07:54He's going to get 20-plus a year.
07:55Jeremiah Love is at $13 million.
07:57He hasn't taken a handoff yet.
07:59But so I think Gibbs wants to get paid.
08:01I think the Lions want to get him paid.
08:03Whoever gets paid second is going to get paid more between B. John and Jameer.
08:06I think there's a possibility the deal gets done before the season starts.
08:09And now if it doesn't, that'll be more.
08:12I agree with you, Gator.
08:13If I'm from a team perspective, I would prefer that just to see where I'm at at the end of
08:17the year.
08:18But you might have to pay up even more.
08:19I'm a fan of Jameer Gibbs being re-signed.
08:24Let me be clear about that.
08:26But I'm also a fan with there's some team outs where they can get out from under the
08:32contract if there starts to be diminishing returns.
08:36And unfortunately, that's just the life of a running back in the NFL, especially one that's
08:40going to have a heavy workload.
08:42I'm a big fan of shorter term.
08:46If it, if that comes with higher, higher guaranteed average annual value, so be it.
08:52But, you know, that's, that's just the profession of running back is a tough one to get that
09:00second contract.
09:02I mean, maybe people get it, but I feel like there's a lot of instances where people regret
09:06it because of the diminishing returns and the shelf life of a running back in the NFL.
09:11So, 248-539-9797, it's Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
