Why is Giannis in Miami?! What happened with the Celtics?
Why did the deal fall through? Was it about a 3rd year? Or was it due to Hugo Gonzalez and/or Baylor Scheierman?
Curtis: "If that is true, that is a fire able offense" Let's hear from Shams Charania
Transcript
00:00Let's begin with Sham Sharania.
00:02He joined the Pat McAfee show and was asked about the fall through of the Giannis deal to Boston.
00:10Why that fell through, what went on there?
00:13Yes, and the assumption made by many that it was the third year and the additional dollars that Giannis wanted
00:22that was a stumbling block in getting that deal done.
00:25That is correct.
00:26Yeah, so here is Sham's.
00:27Does Giannis want 35% of the cap on his next extension?
00:31That's not, that's, that's, yeah.
00:33Okay, that's just a false report, okay.
00:34Yeah, and I assume there's a lot of those going around right now with anonymous sources.
00:37The breakdown with the Giannis-Boston conversation was very simple.
00:41The Celtics did not want to give up Hugo Gonzalez and or Baylor Shireman and another draft asset when the
00:48Bucs asked for that.
00:51That is.
00:52That's so not true.
00:53You don't believe, you don't believe Sham's?
00:56No, I believe that Sham's, and I'm actually, like, I'm getting, I'm pulling away from conspiracy, Curtis.
01:03Like, I'm just, I, I, I.
01:05This is common sense, Curtis?
01:06Common sense.
01:07Like, I just, I'm too exhausted by it.
01:09And I was following nonsense on my vacation about people.
01:12Anyway, that Shams Sharanya is the house organ, just like Jeff Passan is the current house organ, just like Adam
01:20Schefter was the house organ.
01:21That when you are the rights holders network, or the networks, the rights holder for these major leagues, just like
01:29Shams is.
01:30And he's a brilliant reporter.
01:31Just brilliant.
01:32Great.
01:33I think that the, you have to sort of massage things and you will never convince me.
01:39And I'm sure Wiggy right now is at Mass Hall Firearms doing a jig, but like, I do not believe
01:45for a second that you had Giannis and you wouldn't trade those two.
01:49If that is true, then Brad Stevens should be fired.
01:53I'm sorry.
01:54Like, you have the opportunity to have Giannis and that's why you don't, then that's a fireball offense.
01:59He said both or, or one of them.
02:03Like, he wasn't either, you know, either, either both or one of them.
02:07He wasn't willing to trade.
02:08I don't.
02:08Did they follow up?
02:10Like, why?
02:11Right.
02:12I don't, I don't understand it.
02:14Like, I don't get it either.
02:16Look, both those guys are obviously valuable in that their contracts are super small.
02:20And the Celtics, I do think see a ton of upside, especially with Ugo, but at the same time, it's
02:28Giannis and you're in Jason Tatum's prime and you're looking at, okay, we're going to have another bridge here so
02:33that we could maybe swing a trade.
02:36That would be the level of bringing in a Giannis style player to pair with Jason Tatum.
02:40So something about there just doesn't make sense to me.
02:43So you agree.
02:43Yeah, I agree.
02:44I don't want to disparage somebody else's reporting because Shams is totally sourced up.
02:49I'm totally sure.
02:50I just am saying it doesn't make sense.
02:52So either I don't, I don't know that that was necessarily the case, or I'm going to say, like, I
03:00don't love that decision.
03:02And I love Ugo.
03:03So you think Brad Stevens went into that whole thing, which is the pursuit of Giannis, knowing full well what
03:11it was going to do mentally to Jalen Brown, and he didn't expect that Giannis was going to want to
03:18remain a max guy going forward with the Boston Celtics?
03:23I think they were, I think he, they knew that Giannis was going to want an extension at a super
03:29max deal.
03:30And they said, we can, we are willing to do that for, I believe that we are willing to do
03:35that for two years, but not three.
03:36We're not getting into another situation when it's still probably Jason Tatum going for championships where we're tied to a
03:45Giannis contract in his third year.
03:47And he's in his mid to late thirties at that point.
03:50And we can't get out of it.
03:52But who could, I mean, I'm sorry.
03:53Like, I believe that Chums was told that.
03:55I think he's reporting what he was told.
03:58I don't think.
03:58You're talking about Ugo and Baylor.
03:59Yeah, I think that he was given this information and, or he got the information, but at a certain point
04:05you have to kind of be like, well, why am I being told this?
04:08And is it, does it stand up to reason?
04:11You can't tell me that given what was on the line, as Mago alluded to, Tatum is in his prime.
04:18The best player you will have for a generation is in the middle of his prime.
04:21You have the opportunity to bring in a guy that will help you elevate both players in the middle of
04:27their prime to get you to a championship.
04:28And what is, and you have your other star player who is dangling out in the wind and you stop
04:35all of that months of work all the time you spent building this roster.
04:40And it's Ugo and Shireman that are precluding you from bringing in Giannis.
04:45Brad Stevens is smarter than I will ever be.
04:48There is not a chance in hell that that held up the deal.
04:52Why do you say it held up the deal?
04:54Because you don't want to be honest and say it was the money.
04:57Yeah.
04:57So you think that Bill Chisholm was being disingenuous when he sat up there with Brad Stevens and said, it's
05:04only about winning.
05:06That is, it doesn't, doesn't matter.
05:09Uh, financial situation doesn't matter.
05:13And it took it, you know, however he said it, it took Brad a while to convince me that this
05:20is how we had to do.
05:21Like, you believe that was all lying.
05:22Complete and total horse crap.
05:24Look, actions over words.
05:26What's he done since he arrived?
05:27Has it been about winning Greg?
05:29Well, I mean, I, I don't know that he's had, how long has he had the team?
05:32One season.
05:33Okay, so he, do you think the team would have been better, closer to winning a championship if Holiday was
05:37still here?
05:39Yes.
05:39Yes.
05:40Was that a decision founded?
05:41That's really the only decision from last year that you can look at, to be fair, and say that was
05:46the contract that you could have held on to.
05:48To make the team, um, I think Derek White and Peyton Pritchard both would have benefited a lot from having
05:54Drew Holiday still in the lineup.
05:55Yeah, I, I just, I think that it's so clear to me that they didn't want to extend themselves again
06:00with two max guys, and they're using this as an excuse, and if you buy it, you're just enabling the
06:04ownership to do things that are not in the best interest.
06:05The big question is whether, when you hear Bill Chisholm say, we will spend to win championships, if they're presented
06:14that opportunity in the future, if they're going to have two max guys.
