01:09Her name was Debbie Dorian.
01:10She was found murdered.

01:14Nick continued to deny any involvement in this murder.
01:17However, he was extremely standoffish when he was asked to provide his DNA.
01:21We've been asking everybody we talked to if they would voluntarily give us an oral swab
01:27to compare to evidence that's at this scene.
01:31But if you haven't been there, I mean, you know, it's just kind of a mundane thing.
01:36Like, yeah, it sounds like, I don't know, that sounds like, I don't know if I want to do
01:41that.
01:42Clearly, he didn't plan on cooperating.
01:44So the detectives ended the interview, and Nick kindly escorted them outside.
01:49He chatted with them for a bit longer and wished them luck with their investigation.

01:57But the detectives had one last secret.
02:00The entire building was surrounded by officers.

02:13Nick pretended he had no idea what was going on as he was handcuffed and put into the back
02:18of a police cruiser.
02:19Months before this arrest, Fresno and Tulare County authorities reopened the murder case
02:24of 22-year-old Debbie Dorian, which had remained unsolved for 23 years.
02:30Go ahead, ma'am.
02:31My husband just called and went to his daughter's apartment.
02:34She didn't show, and he found her dead in her apartment.
02:37Okay, tell me what your daughter's name is.
02:39Her name is Deborah Dorian.
02:41Family members and neighbors say Debbie Dorian, a Fresno State student, worked hard and had
02:46plans to specialize in audiology.
02:48According to police, Debbie's dad found her body in her bedroom early this morning.
02:52She was lying face up.
02:54Her mouth and nose had been taped shut with some gray-colored tape, except prevented her
03:02from breathing.
03:03Using the killer's DNA collected from Debbie's body, they constructed a family tree, and through
03:08the process of elimination, they were able to pinpoint exactly who the DNA belonged to.
03:13This led them to Nick, a 52-year-old divorced father of two and a longtime resident of Visalia.
03:19After escorting him to the police department, they sat down for an interview, hoping to elicit
03:24a confession and expose this wolf in sheep's clothing.
03:28However, before they could even ask him about Debbie, Nick immediately caught them off guard
03:33by confessing to another set of horrific crimes.
03:36Nick, do you know why you're here today?
03:38Yeah, I do know why I'm here.
03:40I know I've done a couple things here in Visalia that I shouldn't have done.
03:44So when you say a couple things in Visalia, what are the couple things that you're talking
03:50about?
03:50Oh, there's a couple times that I approach women out on the street that they know and stuff
03:54and coerce them into having some final work.
03:57Yeah, so those are things I shouldn't have done.
04:00Against their will?
04:01Yes.
04:02The detectives pulled up their reports from the crimes they suspected Nick was referring
04:07to and read them to him one by one, trying to corroborate his confession.
04:12Suspect pulled a sweatshirt over his face and then placed a handgun in her side.
04:17He escorted the victim and concealed their location behind some bushes.
04:21That might have happened.
04:22I think that might have happened.
04:23If she was standing alone waiting to catch a bus, the suspect approached the victim.
04:28The suspect told the victim not to run or he would kill her.
04:31I say that sounds like me, but I don't think that was me.
04:34Nick took full responsibility for four separate assaults and showed no signs of remorse.
04:40Do you recall what you wore to bring those?
04:44I recall wearing a hoodie.
04:45This is on my offense.
04:46When they asked Nick why he would commit such vile crimes, he said that his past trauma
04:51had led him down the wrong path.
04:54So, you know, I kind of like had some bad things that go on in my life and I could
04:59say
04:59that I've had a problem with, I guess, addiction.
05:07If you have my phone, you'll be able to see that because it has like 400 videos on it
05:11of probably 100 different women.
05:13Nick's addiction resulted in a strange lifestyle where everything he did revolved around getting
05:18attention from women.
05:19This is evident when looking at his digital footprint.
05:22The detectives found his secret Facebook profile under the alias Nick Steele, the chairman of
05:27a Fortune 500 company who lived a lavish lifestyle, drinking and partying with a multitude of women.
05:33Nick would often invite these women back to his place and lead them to his bedroom, which
05:38he had converted into what some may call a playroom.
05:51Nick admitted that these women were mostly escorts.
05:54Apparently, he had been paying for these services ever since he was in high school.
05:58I've had so many encounters with women.
06:03You know, I'm talking about like paid for encounters or this or that or like start chatting with
06:08them and then all the next thing we know we're doing something.
06:10I don't really think that hiring an escort or having a sugar babe or anything like that,
06:17I personally don't think that that's a wrong thing.
06:21I'm a single guy for the last two years and it seems like that really the only women that
06:24pay me any attention are the younger ones.
06:27After telling the detectives all about his promiscuous lifestyle, he finally addressed
06:32the main reason he was there.
06:34The detectives there today before you guys arrested me, you brought up an interesting
06:39case.
06:39One that, you know, it does shock me.
06:41Although Nick initially claimed he had no clue who Debbie was.
06:45Have you ever seen that girl?
06:46Nope.
06:48You don't know her?
06:48He must have had a change of heart after being thrown into the interrogation room because
06:53Nick now claimed that he did, in fact, know Debbie quite intimately.
06:58I was with that girl, you know, several times and stuff like that.

07:01Yes, I was.
07:02So, you know, to be honest with you, she was a picture up on, on in the present of their
07:09own street there at one time.
07:10You know, after I dropped her off, I thought that was going to be the last time I seen of
07:14her.
07:15Okay.
07:15And then, uh, and then she, you know, found her way to my workplace, you know, you know,
07:21on other occasions and, and, uh, asked me if I, you know, would watch you again.
07:26This was the first time that the detectives had heard of Debbie having a secret double
07:30life as an escort.
07:32The question is, does the evidence align with this story?
07:35And if Nick didn't murder Debbie, then who did?
07:40Before Debbie was murdered back in 1996, she was trying to find someone to split her rent
07:46with and had a list of potential roommates that she had recently interviewed.
07:50One of the people on this list, named Alvin, called the police when he heard about Debbie's
07:54murder because he was one of the last people to see her.
07:57It turned out that he had already signed a lease and was going to move in.
08:01But the detectives became suspicious of Alvin when they looked into his background and discovered
08:06that he was a registered offender.
08:08They immediately brought him in for questioning.
08:10This is Detective Bursias, the interview with Alvin.
08:13What did you do when you weren't there?
08:15I knocked the door, uh, shit, I didn't mean to you.
08:18How much time was it that you got there?
08:20Uh, 12, 12, 11.
08:22He told me something about the door, and I don't remember what that was.
08:25It was on Wednesday night, I knocked the door, uh, somebody asked me, blinds were open,
08:31and the TV was gone, something that I could see on the wall.
08:33And then when I knocked the door, nobody asked me, I tried the door.
08:36But there's a microphone now, it's still in the wall.
08:39Alvin claimed that he didn't go inside her apartment, but the detectives found it strange
08:43that he would open the door at all.
08:45However, Alvin said that his friend Maurice was with him and could vouch for him.
08:49So, they brought Maurice in for questioning as well.
09:10Although this interview was initially set up to corroborate Alvin's story, the detectives
09:15wondered if Maurice could be involved in the murder as well.
09:17Since Debbie was discovered bound at the hands and feet, they asked him if he had ever tied
09:22someone up.
09:23He said that he wasn't really into that sort of thing, and the only duct tape he bought
09:28recently was to repair his punching bag.
09:30I think I have a receipt for it in which I bought two things of duct tape to tie up
09:36the
09:36ends of the rope.
09:37But at this point, the detective interviewing him hadn't specifically mentioned duct tape
09:42at all.
09:43And that detail hadn't been released to the public yet.
09:46So, why would Maurice volunteer that information?
09:49Following the interview, they compared Maurice's DNA to the DNA on Debbie's body.
09:53And although it wasn't a perfect match, they were unable to rule him out as a suspect.
09:58Our investigation is that you were the one that did this.
10:01No, I am not the one who did this.
10:03I have nothing to do with this at all.
10:05How many times have I had to keep telling you I did not go inside this apartment?
10:09I do not know this person.
10:11I never met her.
10:12They believed that Maurice was lying about his involvement.
10:15So, he was charged with Debbie's murder.
10:17Maurice, you have to understand something.
10:20Okay, you're under arrest for murder.
10:23As legal proceedings got underway, it seemed that the police investigation into Debbie's
10:28killer was over.
10:29An arrest was made in the death of Deborah Dorian.
10:32I think it's great.
10:32I mean, hopefully it's the right person.
10:34However, this arrest didn't align with some of the most crucial evidence.
10:39One of Debbie's neighbors came forward and said that he saw her answer the door for a
10:43white male after Maurice and Alvin left her apartment.
10:46He walked up the stairs.
10:48He basically knocked on the door and it wasn't a confrontational kind of encounter, but she
10:59let him in.
11:00Also, Maurice had an explanation for why he brought up the duct tape during his interview.
11:05What made you mention that?
11:08Somebody mentioned duct tape or something like that.
11:12Do you have any duct tape or do you know anything about duct tape or something like that?
11:17What was that?
11:18That was when I first came to question.
11:20This explanation was never verified by the police.
11:23They also tested the duct tape at his house and determined that it wasn't even the same
11:28kind of duct tape that was used on Debbie.
11:30On top of all of this, this took place less than a year after the high-profile OJ Simpson
11:35trial, which heavily revolved around DNA.
11:37So there was a lot of pressure on the police to be thorough and accurate with their DNA testing.
11:43The authorities felt obliged to redo Maurice's DNA test and this time,
11:48they were able to rule him out as a suspect.
11:50His charges were dropped and he was once again a free man.
11:54Maurice Dixon walked into court shackled at the hands and feet.
11:57He had been in custody for a little more than two weeks.
12:00Tonight, he is free.
12:02And the investigation into the Debbie Dorian murder case returned to square one.
12:07Right now, we don't want to comment anything at this time.
12:11We're just happy that he's being released.
12:14Although this was good news for Maurice and his family, they were well aware of what this
12:18meant for Debbie's family and the rest of the community.
12:22We know that there is someone out there that have committed this crime and basically the
12:28city is afraid again.
12:29We know it's hard on her family also because they have to go through it again, waiting to
12:35see who they may arrest next.
12:38Every time something like this happens, it's like pulling the scab off a wound.
12:42Our future has been taken away.
12:44We will not see a wedding.
12:45We will not see grandchildren.
12:47She will not get to have a life.
12:49The one thing we can do and the one thing we strive to do is to get the person who
12:55did this.
12:56Debbie's killer proceeded to terrorize Fresno and Tulare County for the next six years.
13:01The DNA found on Debbie's body was tied to at least eight other assault cases between 1996 and 2002.
13:08We feel he's a predator.
13:09You never know when he's going to get the urge to hit again.
13:12You never know if he's going to escalate or if he's going to go back to something else.
13:16He could strike at any time.
13:18There is some very evil, demented predator out there.
13:23The only significant lead during this time was another person on Debbie's list of potential
13:27roommates, someone named Nick.
13:30However, they were unable to figure out who this person was until 2019.
13:56Nick refused to admit that he had any part in Debbie's murder and continued to claim that any
14:01intimate encounters with her were consensual.
14:04But as far as the detectives were concerned, Nick's claims of innocence held no weight.
14:09He was charged for the four assaults that he admitted to, as well as the first degree murder of Debbie
14:13Dorian.
14:14They collected his fingerprints and DNA, and he was booked into the Tulare County Jail.
14:19Nicky Dwayne Stain is the primary suspect in the rape and murder of Debbie Dorian.
14:28Nicky Stain is every woman's nightmare.
14:31He appears to be a regular person, and he is a predator.
14:35I don't know if Debbie's family will ever have closure.
14:38My hope, our hope, is that at the very least, we have provided answers to the family, and
14:45the person responsible for these unimaginable crimes will finally feel the total weight of
14:51our Justice Department.
14:53At Nick's arraignment hearing, he pled not guilty to all of his charges.
14:57So, the prosecutors began preparing for the preliminary hearing, where the judge would
15:01decide if Nick's case would go to a full-on trial.
15:04During this preparation phase, Nick remained behind bars, and made several interesting
15:10phone calls to his friends and family.
15:13This call is from a correction facility, and is subject to monitoring and recording.
15:18Can you hear me, Nick?
15:19Yeah, I can hear you.
15:20You know what?
15:22Those hurting people and things like that that was in my past, I know I need to be punished
15:26for it.
15:27I just know that I'll be here the rest of my life.
15:28Nick left little room for interpretation as he confessed to his crimes.
15:32But his friend couldn't seem to grasp what he was saying.
15:36But you're innocent until you're proven guilty, my book.
15:38You know what you did.
15:40We don't.
15:40We're going to say that you're innocent until they prove otherwise, my opinion.

15:59You know, I did some bad things.
16:02I'm not trying to kind of like hide them.
16:04You know, I mean, I'm ashamed of them, but, but, you know, they're there now.
16:09So it's just like, you know, quit running from it.
16:11Just take it.
16:12The prosecutors knew they struck gold after hearing these phone calls and made them a focal
16:16point during Nick's preliminary hearing on November 28th, 2023.
16:21He said 20 years ago, he had done some bad things and hurt some people and he needed to
16:28pay for what he did.
16:30She said that he had been struggling with demons all his life.
16:35And he said, I can't say I don't deserve what's coming to me because I do.
16:41They went through the rest of the evidence as well, including his interrogation, the DNA
16:45tests and Debbie's list of potential roommates.
16:48And what does it say by number six?
16:50By number six, it has the name Nick and then scratched out or red.
16:56They even tracked down the witness who saw Nick on Debbie's doorstep.
16:59Do you see that person in the courtroom today?

17:02And could you point at him and tell me what color he's wearing?

17:07Debbie's father was then called to the stand to describe the moment he discovered his daughter's
17:13dead body.
17:14It was so shocking to me that I knew I had to maintain composure somewhat and not just fall
17:23apart.
17:24Perhaps the most powerful testimony for the state was from one of Nick's first assault
17:28victims.
17:29Although this victim's testimony wasn't recorded in order to protect her identity during the
17:34trial, Jane Doe No. 1 has since revealed that her name is Beth, hoping to inspire other survivors
17:40to come forward and get the help they need.
17:43For decades, Central California has known her only as Jane Doe No. 1, a victim.
17:48But she is a survivor, one of several women Nicky Stane assaulted after he killed Debbie
17:54Dorian in 1996.
17:56And I stayed quiet.
17:57Just, I didn't know the words to express without crying.
18:02Court hearings were slow and forced her to relive her pain.
18:05She has found comfort in a therapy dog.
18:08Dogs are so calming.
18:10Even with a mountain of evidence against them, Nick's defense team claimed that he'd never
18:14explicitly confessed to Debbie's murder.
18:16Even during the jailhouse phone calls, suggesting that this was just a repeat of what happened
18:22with Maurice Dixon.
18:23On the stand, Fresno County detectives wouldn't even admit that Maurice Dixon's arrest was a
18:29mistake.
18:30So that's a mistake.
18:32I'm not going to say it's a mistake, no.
18:35You refuse to say that arresting the wrong man on faulty lab work is a mistake?

18:45He was eventually cleared.
18:47Yeah, so he was the wrong guy.
18:49This strengthened the defense's point that the county will do anything to secure a conviction,
18:53even if the evidence isn't reliable and they actually have the wrong guy.
18:58But in the end, the defense couldn't convince the judge to drop the charges.
19:01She decided that the state had enough evidence for a full trial by jury.
19:06The defendant has held an answer on all counts and charges.
19:10The prosecutors announced that they were going to pursue the death penalty, and Nick's trial
19:14was eventually set to take place in early 2026.
19:18However, in March of 2025, Nick's defense attorney, Jane Bolger, warned the Supreme Court that she
19:24would no longer be representing Nick if they didn't pay her more money.
19:27And that is not lightly done.
19:30He needs to have effective counsel, and effective counsel needs to be able to work so many hours and days.
19:38In five years, I've been paid $43,000 for a death penalty case.
19:44If Bolger withdraws, the county would have to find new attorneys for stain, which would mean additional years of delay.
19:50It would take three years to go through everything.
19:53Thankfully, Debbie's family wouldn't have to wait that long for a trial, because a couple
19:57months later, on May 15, 2025, Nick unexpectedly pled guilty to all of his charges.
20:04Thirsty, murder.
20:06Guilty.
20:07Thankfully, battery by restraint.
20:10Guilty or no contest.
20:11Guilty, sir.
20:12He pled guilty, not just to avoid the death penalty, but to be accountable, and also for the families not
20:22to have to go through a trial.
20:23Although Nick's defense tried to portray this as Nick taking accountability, behind the scenes, it was clear that this was
20:30not the case.
20:31When Nick's attorney initially proposed a plea deal, he only wanted to plead guilty to Debbie's murder, and wanted all
20:37of the assault charges to be dropped.
20:39But the prosecutors held their ground, and Nick ultimately agreed to plead guilty to all charges, as long as he
20:45was protected from the death penalty.
20:48Debbie's family knew that Nick's decision was purely for his own benefit, but were still grateful that Debbie's killer was
20:54finally being locked up.
20:56He admitted to what he did, and we don't have to prove it, or argue it, or debate it. It's
21:01done.
21:02We asked what Dorian would think.
21:04She's going, Yahoo, Mom. Yeah, yeah.
21:07Nick's sentencing hearing took place on June 12, 2025.
21:11Before the judge would announce his punishment, several people were given the opportunity to give an impact statement, including Jane
21:18Doe No. 1, a.k.a. Beth.
21:20My life changed forever that day. I tried moving on. I tried to forget. To me, every man was in.
21:28I was always scared. Having these thoughts in my head, my flashbacks, the night playing over and over again in
21:34my head. I didn't care about my future. As far as I knew it, I didn't have one.
21:40Debbie's mom was next up to the podium, and she expressed the pain and grief that she was forced to
21:45endure.
21:45I have suffered days, months, and years of pain. 29 Christmases and almost 29 birthdays. The first thing you think
21:56of when you wake up is, Deb is dead. How do you live when a joy of your life has
22:02been extinguished?
22:03She then read a passage that she had written from Debbie's perspective.
22:07Adrenaline flooded my body. I screamed and screamed, but he didn't stop. He wrapped my head in duct tape, covering
22:14my mouth. I couldn't breathe. Everything went dark. I knew my life was over. I would never take a hike
22:20with John, the love of my life. Spend time with my mom. I wouldn't have a wedding. I wouldn't be
22:26a beautiful bride. My dad wouldn't walk down the aisle.
22:29I knew my death would break my mom's heart and change my dad forever. The pain that they suffer is
22:34deeper than anyone can know.
22:36Despite the tragic circumstances, she ended her impact statement with a silver lining.
22:41Though he took my precious Deb, he did not take my soul. I am wiser and stronger than ever from
22:48having to go through this ordeal. He has the rest of his life to pay for what he did, and
22:52he will pay for his evil actions.
22:55In the end, Nikki Dwayne Stain was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
23:01At this point, sir, you are a man in the custody of Fred Lanky Sheriff. I'm again serving your time.
23:06He currently resides at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, and will spend the rest of his natural life with
23:12the California Department of Corrections.
23:15You know, I planted a tree the Christmas after Deborah was killed, and that tree is 50 feet tall and
23:25three feet around. That's a long time to grow. It reminds me of how long it's been that we've been
23:33working on this case.
23:34After decades of pain, perseverance, and unwavering determination, we can finally say that justice, at least some kind of justice,
23:44has been served for Debbie Dorian and her family and the other survivors of the monster that is Nikki Stain.
23:58Well, I tell her I love her every day, so I think she knows. And, you know, you miss seeing
24:06her wedding. You miss seeing the holidays. You miss, what did she grow up? What would she look like? You
24:12know, she was a feisty, wonderful person. You knew when Deb came in the room. She was beautiful. And, yeah,
24:20that's just the way she was.
24:46And, yeah, that's just the way she grew up. And, yeah, that's just the way she grew up.
