Transkrip
00:00What you're about to see is the moment a loving mother is pulled over by the police.
00:04What she doesn't know is that just a few hours earlier,
00:07her vehicle was used to carry out a gruesome murder.
00:10Driver, show up your hand!
00:12Step out of the car, show up your hand!
00:15Show up your hands!
00:17Who else is in the car with you?
00:20Just you?
00:21Can you step back here for me?
00:22I was trying to get my lottery.
00:24Why am I, uh, here's my dog?
00:27There's gonna be some officers here to talk to you in just a second, okay?
00:29No, uh, why you are, why you guys pulled a gun on me is both...
00:34Ma'am, you're gonna stay here, okay?
00:35I can do anything wrong!
00:37Melissa, can I come talk to you over here real quick?
00:39Melissa, you are, you are in a horrible spot right now
00:43because your son has put you in the middle of a big mess, alright?
00:48What are you looking for in my car?
00:50I'm just looking, ma'am.
00:52You know what? Open the doors. You can look all through my car.
00:54I don't have anything.
00:56It's just my work stuff.
00:58You know what? I'm gonna open the doors and you can...
01:00Hey, Melissa.
01:01Melissa, Melissa.
01:02It's really irritating the hell out of me.
01:04Melissa.
01:04Because if you're gonna look in my car, I'll open the doors.
01:06You can look in through my whole car.
01:08Would you mind keeping talking to me while he's just looking around
01:11and I'm not even saying that he's gonna go in your car,
01:13but you're okay if he does?
01:15I don't have anything in there for him to...
01:16Yeah.
01:17Exactly.
01:20Oh.
01:20That looks like vomit.
01:23See this right here?
01:24Right under the phone?
01:27What is it?
01:28Oh, the blood?
01:28Yeah.
01:29There's blood in the front seat, so she got this car from him somehow.
01:33You know what? I'm not gonna answer any more questions.
01:35All right.
01:35Because we're...
01:36Unfortunately, you can't get back in your car right now.
01:39All right?
01:39So you can stay here and talk with me if you'd like.
01:42Ma'am, are you injured at all?
01:43Why would I be injured?
01:45What?
01:45It just looks like there's some blood in the center count,
01:47so I'll just make sure you don't need any medical attention or anything like that.
01:50Where is there blood in the car?
01:56Well, I just want to look at it.
01:58I'm not gonna...
02:01Right by the phone.
02:03By my phone?
02:05Whatever...
02:05Who has every phone that is in the middle?
02:07That's my phone.
02:08Oh, that might be my lipstick.
02:10Our concern is that it's...
02:11My lipstick.
02:13I don't think it's blood.
02:15I know it's not blood.
02:16I don't know that it's not blood.
02:18Okay.
02:20Step over here and talk with me, okay?
02:21I'm gonna let you know what's going on.
02:24You can't tell my car.
02:26I gotta go to work.
02:27You'll find out if you let me talk to you.
02:29Let's go back over here so you can...
02:31No, I need to get my work stuff out of there.
02:33For my car, I need to get my purse.
02:35I don't know what you are out here.
02:36I honestly don't.
02:37I really swear to God, I don't have any idea.
02:40I don't...
02:41I...
02:41I'm telling you the honest truth.
02:43All right.
02:44Taylor is dead.
02:45All right?
02:47And we need to find Jeff before he does something.
02:49Taylor's dead?
02:50Yes.
02:52We're not out here for some little thing.
02:54You're, you're, you're, you're lying.
02:55I'm not lying.
02:56Oh my gosh, are you serious?
02:57Taylor's dead?
02:59The victim, 28-year-old Taylor Dregovich, was attacked at exactly 5.38 p.m. that same day.
03:06It looks like she's gonna stab like five times.
03:08No pulse when I got here.
03:10Someone wanna help her with the structure?
03:12One, two, three, oh.
03:13Oh.
03:14This way, this way, this way.
03:16Go, go, go.
03:17There we go.
03:17There we go.
03:18There we go.
03:18The attack was overheard by her twin brother, Morgan, and her mom, Cindy, who detailed the incident
03:24to the first responders.
03:26All right, what did you say?
03:28What did you say?
03:29There's no way it's happening right now.
03:31She's my twin sister.
03:33What's her name?
03:34Taylor Dregovich.
03:35So we just came back from the movies here.
03:37Okay, all the, all three of you?
03:38Yes.
03:39Okay.
03:39And she was about to drive home, and all of a sudden, we heard her screaming.
03:43Okay.
03:43We thought it was the neighbors downstairs.
03:45Uh-huh.
03:47But, we came down, and mom saw her like this.
03:51Okay.
03:51You didn't see anybody?
03:53No.
03:53You just heard her screaming?
03:54All we saw was there was a car, a gray car.
03:57And it's sliding down, you know, this way.
03:59And then she, no.
04:01And then, then they took off.
04:03Maybe I asked you to do it.
04:04Okay.
04:04Come on, Taylor.
04:05Hang in there.
04:06Does she have a boyfriend?
04:08Yes.
04:08She has a previous boyfriend.
04:10She has a PPO on him.
04:11Okay.
04:11What's his name?
04:12What's his name?
04:14Jeff.
04:14Jeff what?
04:18Jeff Kucharski is Taylor's abusive, alcoholic ex-boyfriend.
04:23When the two broke up three months earlier, Jeff snapped and made several threats to do
04:27something drastic.
04:29Concerned for her safety, Taylor filed a restraining order against him.
04:32Does he have a vehicle?
04:34Yes.
04:34He drives.
04:36Black Chevy.
04:37Yes.
04:37Since Morgan and Cindy saw a gray SUV on the scene and Jeff drove a black Chevy Cruze,
04:43officers were unable to immediately link him to the crime.
04:46However, it was still possible that Jeff borrowed somebody else's car to carry out this attack.
04:52But before investigators focused on Jeff as their main suspect, they needed to rule out
04:57Cindy and Morgan first.
04:59Would you mind if we just search through your apartment and make sure nothing happened in
05:01there?
05:02Okay.
05:04And she never made it inside?
05:06No.
05:06Okay.
05:07Search is complete.
05:08Nothing.
05:08So we just found out that the daughter does not have any room here.
05:11A few officers stayed inside with Cindy and Morgan to ask them some questions.
05:16Meanwhile, in the parking lot, the lead investigator was brought up to speed.
05:20Nobody saw what the hell went down.
05:23I don't think so.
05:24I'm just going to go take a look here.
05:26Based on the trail of blood leading into the passenger side of Taylor's car, it appeared
05:30that she had locked herself inside the vehicle after being stabbed in the face, head, and hand.
05:36Once the attacker fled the scene, Taylor exited the vehicle, losing one of her shoes in the
05:40process.
05:41She then fell to the ground behind the car, where she was found when first responders arrived.
05:46With a potential killer still at large, the officers formed a game plan to track down
05:50their suspect.
05:51They believe who witnessed the person leading was in a gray SUV.
05:58Yeah.
05:58So we need to get on flock and start checking.
06:01While the investigators split up to hunt down any surveillance footage they could find,
06:05Cindy and Morgan were telling the officers everything they knew about Jeff.
06:09I'm just trying to put everything together.
06:10So what I'm getting is, it sounds like she doesn't want to be with him and he's getting
06:14all crazy about it.
06:15I just want to make sure we covered everything and we can put all the pieces together.
06:19I saw him on video trying to keep my date straight.
06:22It's been, it was like two weeks ago he showed up at her work and he spent the night in
06:27jail.
06:28I think like, I think it was two weeks ago.
06:31Yeah.
06:32He got out in the morning, they have the video.
06:34Cindy is talking about one of the many times that Jeff tried to contact Taylor after the
06:39restraining order was put in place.
06:41The first violation was on May 9th, 2023, when Taylor saw Jeff sneaking around outside
06:47of her workplace.
06:48She froze.
06:49She, she, she panicked.
06:51She didn't know what to do.
06:52Um, she just got out of there.
06:54Later that night, home security cameras also caught Jeff outside of Taylor's house.
06:59There are prints on one of the windows where it looks like someone wiped it to look through.
07:05Very, very, very, very, um, she was terrified.
07:09I was just trying to keep it together for her.
07:12Someone needed to be strong.
07:13The next day on May 10th, Jeff was arrested and charged for stalking Taylor.
07:18However, his family immediately posted his bail.
07:21And on the morning of May 11th, he walked free.
07:23About 20 hours later at 4 30 AM on May 12th, he was already back outside of her house.
07:29When he realized that he had been seen, he ran away at full throttle.
07:34Taylor's co-worker, who was with her throughout all of this, immediately called 911.
07:38But they never received an update from the authorities.
07:41Now, just eight days later, Taylor was barely clinging to life after being brutally stabbed.
07:46When the officers with Kalamazoo Public Safety learned about Jeff's history with the
07:51sheriff's office, they reached out to them and asked if they would assist with the investigation.
07:55The sheriff's office agreed to help and obtained a search warrant for Jeff's apartment.
08:00Elmazoo Police Search Warrant.
08:01Anyone inside 3B, come to the front door, please.
08:04Elmazoo Police Search Warrant.
08:05For apartment 3B, anyone inside, call on now.
08:10Police Department, search warrant.
08:13Police Department, search warrant.
08:15Hello, now.
08:16Clear!
08:17Police Search Warrant.
08:19Clear!
08:21He did not hear him.
08:22We do have a telephone number for him.
08:25Not sure if we want to start a phone.
08:27Please.
08:27Dispatch began tracking Jeff's phone number to see if they could pinpoint his location.
08:32Then, informed the officers back at Cindy's that they were struggling to find Jeff.
08:36Is there anywhere else he would go?
08:38Do you have a good address for his parents or names?
08:40Melissa and Mike.
08:41His sister lives there, too.
08:44What's his sister's name, ma'am?
08:45Jasmine.
08:46Jasmine.
08:46Deputies immediately ran with this lead and headed to the Kucharski residence in the neighboring
08:51town of Lawton.
08:52Jeffrey's mom, Melissa Kucharski, from the beginning of this video, answered the door.
08:56Hi.
08:57I'm looking for Jeff.
08:58Is he around?
08:59Why are you looking for my Jeff?
09:00Uh, Calzu wants to talk to him about something.
09:02They asked a couple of us to come out here and try and find him.
09:05Is he home?
09:06He's not even here.
09:07No.
09:07Okay.
09:07Do you know where he stays at?
09:09Um, he has his apartment.
09:11All righty.
09:13Okay.
09:13I appreciate it.
09:15He's not here.
09:16With all of their leads exhausted for now, they set up a stakeout to keep an eye on the
09:20Kucharski residence.
09:22Then, at about 7 p.m., Taylor succumbed to her stab wounds while undergoing emergency
09:26surgery.
09:27She was then pronounced dead.
09:29Also around this time, the investigators reviewing the surveillance footage near the crime scene
09:34discovered a gray GMC SUV fleeing the area just minutes after the stabbing.
09:40When they ran the plates, they learned that this SUV belonged to Jeff's mother, Melissa.
09:45An hour later, at 8 p.m., one of the deputies staking out the Kucharski household saw that
09:51same gray SUV back out of the garage.
09:54They quietly followed for a few miles before pulling the vehicle over, bringing us right
09:59back to the traffic stop at the beginning of this video.
10:02Driver, show up your hand!
10:03Who else is in the car with you?
10:06Why you guys pulled a gun on me is bull...
10:08Ma'am, you're gonna stay here, okay?
10:09I can do anything wrong!
10:11While Melissa might not have done anything wrong, the officers were confident that Jeff
10:15had fled the crime scene in her vehicle, which she was now driving.
10:19Hoping she could provide them with information about Jeff's whereabouts, they told her to
10:23stay put until a detective could speak with her.
10:26This is Mom.
10:27This is Melissa.
10:28Okay.
10:28And car's empty, I'm guessing?
10:29Car's empty.
10:30She say anything about where he is?
10:31She's just pissed off that we're harassed.
10:33Okay.
10:33We think that he took her up in this car from the scene.
10:37So obviously, if she's got it, she had some kind of communication with him.
10:41Do you still have eyes on that house?
10:43I don't think so.
10:44I can go slide back there.
10:45If we could get some more eyes on the house, we'll talk to Mom real quick.
10:49Hi, ma'am.
10:50Why did I get a gun for you?
10:51I understand.
10:53I understand.
10:53So they...
10:54They both pulled a gun at me.
10:55I'm sure you're very worried and frustrated about everything that's gone.
10:59I have no idea what's going on.
11:00Allow me to explain everything, okay?
11:02We need to talk to Jeff.
11:03Jeff and Taylor got into it, and we got to talk to him right away.
11:07They got into it.
11:08Yes.
11:09Did he go to see her or something?
11:11Yes.
11:12Do you know, is he back at your place?
11:14No.
11:14Do you know where he's at?
11:16No.
11:17Melissa, can I come talk to you over here real quick?
11:19I know that Jeff was in that vehicle within the last couple of hours,
11:24and I know that that vehicle made it back to your place and left.
11:28And we need to get a hold of him because we are concerned for his safety.
11:31I don't know how to get a hold of Jeffrey.
11:35I...
11:36What are you looking for in my car?
11:38See this right here?
11:40Right under the phone?
11:41What is it?
11:42Oh, the blood?
11:43Yeah.
11:43Inside the car, there appeared to be blood smeared on the center console,
11:47on a miniature trash can sitting in the cup holder, and in the front seat.
11:51There's blood in the front seat, so she got this car from him somehow.
11:55You know what?
11:56I'm not going to answer any more questions because...
11:58We're...
11:59Unfortunately, you can't get back in your car right now.
12:01Where is there blood in the car?
12:03Oh, that might be my lipstick.
12:04Our concern is that it's...
12:06That might be my lipstick.
12:08I don't think it's blood.
12:09I know it's not blood.
12:11I don't know that it's not blood.
12:13Okay.
12:14Step over here and talk with me, okay?
12:15I'm going to let you know what's going on.
12:17Melissa?
12:18What?
12:18Do you think we're out here for a PPO violation?
12:20I don't know what you are out here.
12:22I honestly don't.
12:23I really swear to God, I don't have any idea.
12:26I don't...
12:27I...
12:27I'm telling you the honest truth.
12:29All right.
12:30Taylor is dead.
12:31All right?
12:32And we need to find Jeff before he does something.
12:35Taylor is dead?
12:36Yes.
12:37We're not out here for some little thing.
12:40You're, you're, you're, you're...
12:40You're lying.
12:41I'm not lying.
12:41Oh, my gosh.
12:42Are you serious?
12:43Taylor's dead?
12:44Think about everything that's happened in the last hour.
12:47I love Taylor.
12:47At this point, we know that Jeff is involved and he was at your house.
12:52When was the last time you saw Jeff?
12:55I saw Jeff a couple days ago.
12:57Jeff is putting you into the point where you could be an accessory after the fact of murder.
13:01Do you understand that?
13:02I didn't...
13:03I don't know anything.
13:04I don't know anything.
13:05Oh, my gosh.
13:06I can't believe Taylor's dead.
13:07We will find him.
13:09We will arrest him for this.
13:10Do you also want to share the cell with him?
13:14Please just don't talk to me, okay?
13:15Melissa's car and phone were seized and she was finally allowed to leave.
13:19But since she was stuck in the middle of nowhere without a car,
13:22the deputies offered to transport her wherever she needed to go.
13:25If you can get her wherever it is most convenient for her.
13:29I can drop you at a hotel if you don't got family.
13:31Are you comfortable with one of the hotels?
13:33Yeah.
13:33I guess so.
13:34Okay.
13:35Before we get in the car, before they really get rolling on that thing,
13:39is Jeff going to pop out behind the door and try to stab one of us?
13:43No.
13:44While this conversation took place, dispatch managed to ping Jeff's phone to Melissa's house.
13:49Officers quickly headed to the home and surrounded it
13:52and were now demanding whoever was inside to evacuate.
13:55Please come to the front door.
13:56There's arms in the air.
13:58Within minutes, Jeff's sister Jasmine and her boyfriend Zach exited the residence.
14:03Jasmine?
14:04Yep.
14:04Yep.
14:05We're going to get Zach.
14:06Yep.
14:07Keep walking out.
14:08I'm a city.
14:09There we go.
14:11You can get passed out.
14:12Okay, you can get passed out.
14:12Okay.
14:13You can just put your hands on top of the truck hood.
14:15Zach, right?
14:16Okay.
14:17After making sure that they didn't have any weapons on them,
14:19one of the detectives pulled Jasmine to the side to speak with her first.
14:23Jeff and Taylor kind of got into it earlier today.
14:26Have you talked to him or seen him today?
14:28It won't be called.
14:29It'll be like, okay, clock.
14:31You'll go.
14:32That was when you last talked to him?
14:34I think so, yeah.
14:35Just for my peace of mind, would you mind showing me your phone,
14:38like the text messages they call out just so I can say he hasn't texted or called her since three
14:43or whatever?
14:44What's he listed under?
14:45Yeah.
14:45Is this you on this side?
14:47Yeah, I think so.
14:48There may be.
14:49So he said cops are here at 6.53.
14:52You said 20 minutes out.
14:53Lawyer, is this you talking to him?
14:55Yeah, I guess.
14:56He said call mom.
14:58Tell her to tell them to leave.
15:00You don't remember that?
15:01I don't know.
15:03Yes, I don't know.
15:04He was, oh, my God.
15:06Now that you mention it, I'm so sorry.
15:08Yeah, I just, I, I guess he panics all the time about the cops.
15:15I write it off.
15:16How come you told him to get a lawyer?
15:18Because if she said he broke PPO and he didn't, or he did, then he's going to go back to
15:21jail.
15:22And if he goes back to jail for three months, he's just going to get a lawyer.
15:24Is Jeff inside the house?
15:26No, I don't think so.
15:28I don't know.
15:29We've been gone all day.
15:30All right.
15:31Give me just a minute.
15:32I'll be right back.
15:33Okay.
15:33Just when they were ready to move forward with the search, Jeff's dad showed up.
15:38Hi, Michael.
15:38I know your wife reached out to you at some point.
15:41Have you talked to Jeff at all tonight?
15:43No.
15:43You know when the last time you would have spoke to him was?
15:46That would be April.
15:48Do you guys have any weapons in the house or anything like that?
15:51I do have, uh, my dad's gun.
15:54Uh, it's a .22.
15:55We can go up to the side and come across.
15:57Yep.
15:58Are you ready?
15:59Yep.
16:00Kalamazoo police!
16:02Anyone inside, come to the front door!
16:05Jeff, come to the front door!
16:06I'm guessing this is the garage?
16:11Yep.
16:12Kalamazoo police!
16:13Search warrant!
16:14Anyone inside, call out now!
16:16Come on, Jeff!
16:17Call out, buddy!
16:20Kalamazoo police!
16:21Anyone in the garage, call out now!
16:23All right.
16:24Clear.
16:25After clearing the entire residence, it seemed that Jeff wasn't there after all.
16:29But then, one of the detectives noticed something.
16:32Is that insulation?
16:33Is there a scuttle?
16:34Look up.
16:35Yeah.
16:36Is there a scuttle?
16:37Uh, yeah.
16:38Do you see this?
16:38The insulation over here?
16:42Yep.
16:42A hole in the ceiling had clearly been disturbed, so the detectives wondered if Jeff had crawled up there.
16:48They couldn't just climb up their head first and risk being attacked, so their drone operator used a camera on
16:54a selfie stick to scope things out first.
16:58Jeff, can you call out, please?
16:59Come on out.
17:02You're going to need more height on it, man.
17:05Yeah, there he is.
17:07Yeah, he's up there.
17:09He's got a knife.
17:10Hey, Jeff?
17:11What's that in your mouth?
17:13Ovate?
17:14Okay.
17:14Jeff, I want you to drop that knife, okay, bud?
17:17Can you put the knife down?
17:19I'm down.
17:20I can tell you right now, I wholeheartedly will let you talk to your dad and your sister if you
17:25want to come down right now, okay?
17:30I'd really like it for your safety, for my partner's safety and eyes.
17:35Can we just have you come on down with me right now?
17:38All right.
17:39I've got more stuff.
17:40We're kind of not going to do the whole more time thing, okay?
17:44After a few more minutes, it was clear that Jeff wasn't budging.
17:47So a group of deputies moved forward with tearing down the garage ceiling.
17:51Jeff, put the knife down.
17:53Listen to me.
17:54Listen to me.
17:55Drop the knife.
17:57Put the knife down, okay?
17:58Put the knife down.
17:59We care about you.
18:02We don't want anything to happen to you.
18:05All these gentlemen are doing is helping you get access down.
18:08However, it wasn't long before Jeff made a hole of his own.
18:12Jeff.
18:14Hey, Jeff.
18:15Move a little bit.
18:16Jeff.
18:17Stop, Jeff.
18:19Stop visual.
18:21Jeff.
18:22Jeff, we got a hole, so come on down in that hole right there if you can.
18:25They continued cutting holes in the ceiling until the entire attic was exposed, and Jeff
18:29had nowhere to hide.
18:30However, he still didn't want to come down.
18:33With no real progress being made, the deputies decided to get into the attic with Jeff and
18:38talk to him face to face.
18:39Okay, you see me, bud?
18:40What is going on down here is them wanting to see that you're okay.
18:46All right?
18:46I want you to drop your knife down to the floor over there by those guys.
18:51If you just put the knife down, I'll walk over to you, and we'll help you get down out
18:56of here.
18:57We can move this ladder to any of these holes, okay?
19:01Whatever is easiest.
19:02Okay.
19:03Have a shot?
19:04No.
19:04We're not even...
19:05We're not even...
19:07Okay, I'm not even pointing at you, okay?
19:09Could you just set it down for a second and see what happens, and then we can just keep
19:12talking?
19:15Thank you very much, Jeff.
19:16Could you do me one more thing?
19:18Could you just take your hand and maybe put it on the two-by-four so that you're just
19:21not holding it?
19:22You're going to shoot.
19:23No one even has a gun out.
19:24We're not doing that.
19:25Okay.
19:26Gun's in my holster.
19:27I'm standing here, and I'm closer to you because I want you to be able to see that I'm
19:31not trying to play games with you, okay?
19:32I'm not trying to trick you.
19:33I want you to talk to us.
19:35Games are okay.
19:35Why can't you guys just...
19:36We don't want to do that, and we're not going to do that.
19:40Just put the knife down.
19:42No.
19:43No.
19:44I know we're talking in circles, but why can't you guys just...
19:49Get him from under power.
19:54Get him from under power.
19:55Keep him under power.
19:56Got him.
19:57Ow.
19:58Knife's out.
19:58Knife's out.
19:59Knife down.
20:00Knife down.
20:01Hey.
20:01All right.
20:02You're good.
20:02Let's get him up before he goes through.
20:05Okay.
20:05With Jeff finally in custody, the hard part now was getting him out of there smoothly.
20:09Jeff was a bit wobbly after being tased, so he ended up falling through the ceiling again.
20:15Oh, oh, oh.
20:16Oh, oh.
20:16Jeff.
20:17Watch the drywall there, guys.
20:19That's gross.
20:20Come on.
20:20Stand up.
20:21Stand up, Jeff.
20:22Jeff.
20:22Come on.
20:24Help.
20:24Help.
20:25That's okay.
20:25Guys, can you help?
20:26He's coming down.
20:27We can't.
20:28We raised you.
20:29We could try to catch him.
20:30I think Veld and I can probably assist in a lowering here to help with the legs.
20:34Go ahead, Jeff.
20:35You go ahead.
20:35Good, but now we'll...
20:44While Jeff was being put in cuffs, the officers in the attic couldn't help but celebrate.
20:49That was awesome.
20:51Jeff was taken to the back of a police cruiser, and although he was removed from the attic
20:55against his will, the officers held up their end of the bargain.
20:59Hey, brother, I'm going to have your sister come back so you can talk to her.
21:03Are you okay with that?
21:04Yeah.
21:04You want to do that?
21:05Sure.
21:06Okay.
21:07Hey.
21:08What's up?
21:10Oh.
21:11You just...
21:11I don't...
21:12I don't know.
21:13I don't know.
21:15I love you still.
21:16I love you too.
21:17I don't know.
21:18I don't know anything.
21:20Yeah.
21:21I don't know what you want to say to me, but they let me talk to you.
21:27Yeah, I guess so.
21:28I guess just pay my bail.
21:33Call some lawyers.
21:35Well, you're genuinely f***ing insane, so I might be right on that.
21:39Yeah.
21:40All right.
21:41We're going to get rocking.
21:43Have you good morning.
21:46Jeff, I'm so glad you're sitting here talking to me.
21:49Oh my gosh, man.
21:50You have no idea.
21:52Yeah.
21:52The officers were being especially nice to Jeff in order to gain his trust and ultimately
21:57elicit a confession.
21:59He was transported to the Kalamazoo Public Safety Headquarters to be interviewed by the
22:03detectives.
22:04Well, Jeff, we obviously brought you down here so we could sit down like men.
22:08This is an opportunity for you to give us your side of the story about what happened
22:13here today.
22:13Jeff told the officers about his day leading up to the standoff in the attic, but he didn't
22:18mention Taylor or his mom's vehicle at all.
22:21What car did you drive when you drove to your parents' house today?
22:25What car was that that you brought there?
22:27I used Zach and Jasmine's car.
22:29The one that was in the driveway?
22:30Yeah.
22:31Is there any chance that maybe you were in your mom's car?
22:34No.
22:35Are you sure?
22:36Mm-hmm.
22:37You think, who was in your mom's car today then?
22:40My mom?
22:41Yeah.
22:43She had to run some airing.
22:46Well, wouldn't it surprise you if I told you that that car was in Kalamazoo this afternoon?
22:51Your mom's was?
22:53I can tell you.
22:53Yeah, she's probably in Kalamazoo.
22:56But she said she wasn't in Kalamazoo.
23:00Mm-hmm.
23:01We've been working since this evening, since this incident happened, but we can track exactly
23:08where you've been.
23:09And we know that you didn't take your sister's little gray car.
23:16Obviously, we didn't just show up at your house randomly today, right?
23:19We know that you were in your mom's 2019 GMC terrain.
23:25We know that you were over on Cork Street with Taylor.
23:29Your mom's car was right here.
23:32At Cork and Old Cork.
23:33I don't remember that.
23:35You don't remember any of that?
23:36No.
23:36Okay.
23:37Upon seeing the surveillance screenshots of his mom's SUV near the crime scene, Jeff suddenly
23:42closed himself off.
23:44I'd like to speak to my lawyers.
23:46Okay.
23:47That's all right.
23:48It's absolutely fine.
23:49Yep.
23:49Okay.
23:50That's your right, man.
23:51So what's next?
23:53What's next?
23:54Yep.
23:55Well, you're going to go to jail.
23:57Mm-hmm.
23:58And then this case will go before the prosecutor's office.
24:01Mm-hmm.
24:01And they'll decide what the appropriate charge is.
24:04Okay.
24:05Okay.
24:06The next day, Jeff attended court via webcam through the people of his cell where he was
24:11formally charged with Taylor's murder.
24:12It is alleged that on or about May 20th, 2023, in Kalamazoo County, state of Michigan, that
24:19you did murder Taylor Dragovich.
24:22This crime is a felony.
24:24It is punishable by life in prison.
24:27Do you understand the maximum possible penalty?
24:30Yes, I do.
24:31In the subsequent investigation following Jeff's arrest, investigators found a GPS tracker on
24:37the bottom of Taylor's car.
24:38A fingerprint on this tracker was analyzed and confirmed that it belonged to Jeff.
24:42They also tested the red substance in Melissa's SUV and determined that it was, in fact, Taylor's
24:48blood.
24:49Her blood was also on Jeff's knife and all over his clothes.
24:52The police were never able to prove that Melissa knew what Jeff had used her vehicle for, so
24:57she never received any charges.
24:59In December of 2024, a year and a half after Taylor's death, Jeff pled guilty to second-degree
25:05murder.
25:06How do you wish to now plead to a charge of murder in the second-degree?
25:10Guilty.
25:11Are you pleading guilty because you are, in fact, guilty?
25:14Yes.
25:15Following this court hearing, local news questioned Cindy about how she felt about Jeff's horrific
25:20actions.
25:21It's very hard.
25:22It makes me sick.
25:25I guess the best word is betrayal, because while he was never my favorite person in the
25:30world, Taylor chose him, so we accepted him into our family.
25:35We've been living a nightmare, so at least in January, we can put this part of the nightmare
25:40behind us and just focus on healing and moving forward like I know she would want us to do.
25:48In January of 2025, Jeff's sentencing hearing took place.
25:52Cindy and Morgan Dragovich had a lot to say during their impact statements.
25:57You are a piece of garbage, and because of what you did to my sister, I can't trust people
26:03anymore.
26:03I had to see a therapist, so I don't have to walk around feeling like a failure, because
26:11I couldn't protect her from you.
26:13You were nothing but a scumbag.
26:15You don't deserve to live.
26:17The PPO that she was granted did nothing to protect her, and he was free to lie in wait
26:22and fatally attack her when her defenses were down.
26:25I am as disgusted by the system that allowed this to happen as I am by the defendant's actions.
26:32Taylor deserved better.
26:33In the end, Jeff Kucharski was sentenced to a minimum of 60 years in prison.
26:37He currently resides at the St. Louis Correctional Facility in St. Louis, Michigan, and his earliest
26:43release date is in the year 2083.
26:46Everyone did what they were supposed to do, except law enforcement.
26:50I feel like I was failed.
26:53I feel like she was failed.
26:54I feel like our entire family, all of our friends, we were failed.
26:58I thought we relayed to them how afraid we were, but I guess not.
27:02I was devastated.
27:03I am devastated.
27:05And I'm angry.
27:07I'm angry that this happened to such a beautiful person that had so much going for her.
27:14It's just a tragedy.
27:16In my saddest moments, it's like I can feel her hugs, and I can hear her laughing.
27:22That's what I'm going to miss about her.
27:24And I miss those times when I struggle at work.
27:27And just simply being in her presence was enough to make me feel better.
27:32And I know a lot of people felt that way.
27:35When I think of Taylor, the first thing that I think of is a smile that she always had on
27:39her face.
27:40She would light up the room when she came in, just in her interest and people and her positive attitude.
27:48I miss her smile.
27:49I miss her laugh.
27:51That's the essence of her, yeah, just that big smile.
27:53And she had it on all the time.
27:55I hope that they remember her.
27:57I know they were going to remember her for her beautiful smile and the presence that she had.
28:03That's how we're going to remember her.
28:05She's going to be missed.
28:07She is missed.
28:28She's passed.
28:29Amen.
28:33Let's look at this.
28:33We're going to be missed.
28:33Then this is a place where we're going to đi.
28:33We might have taken a moment in where we have to stay.
28:34We can leave it.
28:34Bye.
28:34Bye.
28:34Bye.
28:35Bye.
