00:00What you are watching is body cam footage recorded by a Palm Beach Gardens police officer
00:04as he responds to a report of a dead body discovered at a public park.
00:09Hi.
00:10Took my dogs for a walk.
00:11There's a different identification on you.
00:13I take my dogs for a walk every morning.
00:14I took them at 5.30.
00:15There was nothing.
00:16Came back here at 7 o'clock.
00:19The dogs come running over here and look, he's got, he's deader in a door.
00:22Okay, all right.
00:24The dead body being referred to is that of 71-year-old Florida man,
00:28Allen Abramson.
00:30Within minutes, EMTs arrived at the scene and confirmed that Allen was, in fact, dead.
00:35Don't go nowhere.
00:36I need names.
00:37I thought he was sleeping.
00:38That's why I yelled at the dogs.
00:40What time was it that you found him?
00:42The tennis shoes are.
00:42What time do you think that he found him?
00:44Ten minutes ago.
00:45Ten minutes ago.
00:475.30, there was nobody here.
00:49Okay.
00:49Brought him back at 7, and that's my foul name.
00:52Did he look like he was shot or something?
00:53Yeah.
00:53Straight into the heart.

00:59Since Allen had clearly been shot, officers wondered if the murder weapon had been abandoned
01:04nearby.
01:05So, as some officers scoured the field on their hands and knees, a diving team also searched
01:10a nearby river.
01:11As these searches took place, other officers began interviewing anybody that walked past
01:16the crime scene, hoping somebody had witnessed something between 5.30 and 7 a.m. that morning.
01:22Hey, did you see this?
01:24No, I'm right past here every day to go to work.
01:27So, he's one of the guys that I do use since he walked past here.
01:30Oh.
01:30So, the guy that's over here with the white gentleman that's talking, he's sanitized.
01:35Okay.
01:36Did he stop you?
01:38Yeah, he stopped me.
01:38Okay.
01:39Because he doesn't have the phone.
01:40Do you take this path all the time?
01:41No, this is my first time.
01:42I'm going to an eye doctor.
01:43Did anyone talk to you specifically this week?
01:46Anybody that stood out to you as suspicious or dangerous or anything?
01:50No.
01:51Detectives also headed to Allen's home in the Ballin Isles private community to inform his
01:56wife Linda of his death.
01:57They knocked on the door several times, but nobody answered.
02:00So, they decided to try calling Linda.
02:03When she answered the phone, she explained that she was actually on vacation 1,400 miles
02:08away.
02:09Realizing that this murder was becoming a complex investigation, the detectives contacted
02:13the first responders on the scene to ask if there had been any more developments.
02:18They explained that Allen was actually shot on the left side of his chest, and the wound
02:22was surrounded in gunshot residue and burnt fabric.
02:25The presence of GSR and burnt fabric indicated that he was shot at very close range.
02:30There was something odd, though.
02:32The bloodstain on Allen's shirt had a thin trail of blood going up his shoulder, almost
02:37as if something was traveling upwards and had dragged through the gunshot wound and up
02:41his shirt.
02:42This was something they had never seen before.
02:44Another strange finding was the assortment of random items that were found on the ground
02:48directly next to Allen.
02:50This included his phone, a pair of scissors, some string, rubber bands, and a binder clip.
02:56When they asked Linda about these items, she confirmed that the binder clip found at the
03:00scene belonged to Allen.
03:02Apparently, he regularly used it to carry about $500 in cash.
03:06Since there was no money at the crime scene, the investigators wondered if Allen's death
03:10was actually a robbery gone wrong.
03:13But who would want to rob and murder Allen so early in the morning?
03:16Linda seemed to have an answer for that as well.
03:19She told the detectives that Allen's morning walks were usually to meet his friend Victor
03:23at Starbucks, which they later confirmed by looking through the Starbucks surveillance
03:27footage.
03:28So, the detectives tracked down Victor to see if he had any valuable information.
03:33All right.
03:34So, how long have you known Allen?
03:35I'm going to say three years, maybe.
03:37Okay.
03:38And do you hang out with him regularly?
03:41Yeah, we socialize.
03:42You know, we came to you because you're friends with us.

03:45Something happened to him today, this morning.
03:48That's why he didn't make it to the Starbucks.
03:50He was involved in an incident, and he passed away.

03:59That's how we ended up coming to talk to you, because she said that you may know some

04:06Guys, you know, maybe I see him once a week because he golfs on the Monday-Friday group

04:26Well, he could have been suspicious.

04:33Since Victor was the only person other than Linda who knew about the Starbucks rendezvous,
04:38the detectives had their suspicions that he had something to do with Alan's death.
04:42But instead of bringing him back to the station right away, they wondered if Victor could point
04:46them toward any other potential suspects.
04:49Do you know of anybody that would have an anger towards Mr. Abramson or any kind of...
04:55No.
04:55Do you have any girlfriends or anybody that he was flirting with?
05:01No, I don't think so.
05:02No complaints about relatives or friends or anybody he owes money to or...
05:08No, he had one kind of a business partner.
05:11Curious if this business partner had a financial motive to kill Alan.
05:15Detectives went to his house to speak with him.
05:17How long have you done?
05:18I would say about 20 years.
05:23And how long have you guys been in business together?
05:25Well, this business stopped about three years ago.
05:30This is not a current thing.
05:33This is a past year.
05:39This friend also had no idea who could have done this.
05:42But he was at least able to help the detectives get in touch with Alan's children from a previous
05:47marriage, Rachel and Daniel Abramson.
05:50Unfortunately, Rachel and Daniel lived in Boston.
05:53So the detectives would have to wait a few days to interview them in person.
05:57In the meantime, the detectives looked at the Ballin Isle surveillance footage from the morning of the shooting.
06:02In the footage, Alan can be seen leaving the front entrance at 5.53 a.m.
06:06and walking towards PGA Boulevard.
06:09This road leads straight to Starbucks and just so happens to pass the field where Alan was found dead.
06:15Looking closely at the footage, Alan can be seen carrying something in his left hand.
06:20But it's unclear what it is.
06:22Nothing else happens for 37 minutes until suddenly...
06:27A gunshot.
06:28The walk from where Alan was last seen to where his body was found only takes about four minutes.
06:33So what happened in the 37 minutes leading up to the shooting?
06:36The detectives obtained a search warrant for Alan's house to see if they could find any more pieces of this
06:42puzzle.
06:42They were able to find several firearms.
06:45Today's date is January 31st.
06:47Time is 11.28 a.m.
06:50In the garage of the deceased.
06:51And this is going to be a video of firearms taken from the garage.
06:55There's a handgun inside.
06:57There's only two inside the hard case.
07:00I will take them to the PD for evidence.
07:03However, none of the guns or ammunition matched the bullet that was recovered during Alan's autopsy.
07:08A fully copper hollow point .38 caliber bullet.
07:12Looking into Alan's financial records, they learned that he had a hefty life insurance policy with several beneficiaries within his
07:19family.
07:19Perhaps someone in Alan's family had hired a hitman in order to collect their payout.
07:24Desperate for answers, the detectives interviewed everybody in Alan's inner circle, including his friend Alan Hirsch, who was expecting to
07:31golf with him on the day that he died.
07:34How long have you known Alan?
07:36A year and a half.
07:38How would you describe Alan?
07:41Affable.
07:42I was telling somebody, I don't think I ever saw him when he went and spun.
07:46Oh, really?
07:47Yeah.
07:47He was very funny.
07:49Then we started playing golf together.
07:50He was a hoot on the golf course, so it didn't matter.
07:53It was just a lot of fun.
07:54So it looks like a lot of people loved him.
07:56It looks like he knew a lot of people in Ballin Isles.
07:58From everybody that we speak to, it seems like he was nothing but a lovable guy.
08:02He didn't have any beef with anybody.
08:05Was he confrontational at all?
08:07Not at all.
08:08Not any experience I ever had.
08:10Okay.

08:11He was in my foursome for Thursday, 1230 tea time.
08:14And I got there around noon, was warming up, and the other two fellows in the foursome asked me if
08:21I'd seen Alan.
08:22That dad said, no, usually he'd be here early because he likes to hit a lot of balls for his
08:27flight.
08:27And he says, I don't think he's going to show up.
08:29And I said, well, let me call him.
08:31And at about 20 after 12, I called his cell phone and got no answer.
08:34I said, he's not going to answer him.
08:35Okay.
08:36So we went out and played.
08:37So you called Alan's phone?
08:39Okay.
08:4112-19, I think it was.
08:43It's unfortunate for the community.
08:44It's kind of like losing their innocence.
08:46Following this interview, they circled back with Victor to see if they could rule him out as a suspect.
08:50Victor, how are you doing?
08:52Good to see you.
08:54How long have you known Alan?
08:56Alan, basically when he moved in the Bellin' house, I'm going to say five years.
09:00I would consider Alan a good friend.
09:02You've been out to dinner with him before?
09:04You and Alan recently started meeting at Starbucks.
09:07Alan doesn't show up on Thursday.
09:09You call.
09:11He goes to voicemail.
09:12You call again.
09:13The last time I tried him was 6.49, I think.
09:18And I probably left around, yeah, I left to a 7.
09:21I left for 7.
09:22Is that out of character for Alan not to show up?
09:24You know, I mean, I thought nothing of it.
09:27That maybe he overslept, whatever.
09:29I mean, I wasn't going to go to his home and ring the doorbells.
09:31They can't wake him.
09:32Quite frankly, that's what I kind of figured.
09:34As an investigator, put yourself in my shoes, okay?
09:39You're the only person that knew he was going to be walking out of that gate that night.
09:42When you left the Starbucks that morning, I would assume you went westbound on PGA towards
09:50Mellon Island and went right by that lake shore.
09:52How many police guards do you think were there?
09:54I don't know, six, maybe?
09:56I suppose.
09:57And guys, honestly, it was never gone on me.
10:01In hindsight, I mean, maybe it didn't.
10:05The detectives were even more suspicious after hearing Victor's side of the story.
10:09But after speaking with him long enough, they were eventually able to cross him off their list.
10:14Once again, they asked him if he had any idea who could have been responsible.
10:19Do you know anybody who would want to harm him?
10:21No, I do not.
10:23What would you say the general consensus of Alan is amongst the community, amongst his friends?
10:28How would you describe him to somebody who never met him, which is us?
10:31Well, it's just a guy you'd want to go out and have a beer with, or hang out with, or
10:35spend four hours on the golf course with.
10:38He was just a funny guy.
10:40Did he talk about any business dealings that are coming up or anything like that?
10:44Having to meet anybody, anything at all?
10:47No.
10:48And how would you describe, if you know, his relationship with Linda?
10:52I think it's great.
10:53And I think they were just really soulmates.
10:56All of Alan's friends and family said that he had a solid marriage with Linda.
11:00But Linda was actually Alan's second wife.
11:03While interviewing Alan's kids, Rachel and Daniel, the detectives learned that Alan wasn't always such a loving husband and father.
11:10Fill me in on some background.
11:12Tell me about your dad and how things are, were, and things you think I should know.
11:17Gosh, I don't know.
11:18Let me ask you.
11:19Y'all have any leads right now?
11:20Let's go with this.
11:21Okay.
11:22Over the phone, you said you've been basically estranged since 2003.
11:26Yeah.
11:26My dad, I mean, I'll give you an example.
11:27We were driving to Baltimore, and he was bringing me to grad school.
11:31And he says to me, I just want you to know I gave up a weekend with friends to do
11:34this.
11:34That was everything you needed to know about Alan Abramson as a father to Daniel Abramson and Rachel Abramson.
11:42Was, we stood in the way of things.
11:45And that is how I always felt.
11:47I know he loved me to the best of his ability.
11:49I know that.
11:50But I just...
12:00Rachel and Daniel were painting their father as a completely different person than everybody else.
12:06Even Alan's reputation as the life of the party took a darker tone.
12:10Well, you told me on the phone that you wanted me to know that your father was not a Boy
12:13Scout.
12:13He was not a Boy Scout.
12:15That he was a big partier.
12:16He was obnoxious.
12:17Yes.
12:17And he knew what buttons to push.
12:18He did.
12:19Could you elaborate on that?
12:20He could be very offensive.
12:22He could be loud.
12:23He would just like say things.
12:24I know, you know, my father liked to drink.
12:27My father liked to party.
12:28He was a distant dude.
12:29Like, we had a hard childhood.
12:31He didn't have a maternal mother and he didn't have a paternal father.
12:34And he's telling a guy, like, shouldn't have had kids.
12:37And we were just sort of like, my brother and I were an afterthought.
12:42Clearly, Alan had rubbed some people the wrong way back in the day.
12:45So, did Alan's past finally come back to haunt him?
12:49The detectives asked Rachel and Daniel if their parents had a history of fighting.
12:52Apparently, a huge point of contention was Alan's infidelity.
12:56We would have a baby service for the summer.
12:59When you were small?
13:00Well, we were little.
13:01Yeah, they would come for the summer of college.
13:03One year, my mom got a letter from Juan who was Mormon and was making amends for all the things
13:08she had done.
13:09And part of it was apologizing for my father having, like, been romantic with him.
13:15But just because someone cheats on one person doesn't mean anything, you know?
13:19Do you know anybody would want to cause your father harm?
13:24The short answer is no.
13:26What we've wondered was, was he worth more dead than alive to somebody?
13:31I know he had life insurance policies.
13:33I know there was a big trust from my grandfather.
13:35Like, we're going to say any of that.
13:37But I know there was money, from what I know about this single gunshot wound, which has mixed.
13:43It's really bizarre.
13:46Is there anything that you want to add?
13:49Anything that you think?
13:50Is there any leads?
13:51Like...
13:52We're working the case.
13:53If you notice, there's hardly anybody up here except me right now.

13:57And people are being interviewed?
13:59Yes, ma'am.
13:59Do you think he's, like, when they shot him, do you think he laid there for a long time?
14:04Like, did he suffer?
14:06No.
14:08Okay.
14:10These interviews were eye-opening, to say the least.
14:12The person that everybody appeared to love for his vibrant personality turned out to have a past littered with drama.
14:19But when the detectives looked into his ex-wife as a potential suspect, they were quickly able to rule her
14:24out.
14:24They also got the results from the crime lab, and there was no evidence of somebody else's DNA or fingerprints
14:30on the items discovered at the crime scene.
14:32Just as the detectives were beginning to lose hope, they were finally able to execute a search warrant on Alan's
14:37phone and extract all of its data.
14:40The location history showed that on January 23rd, Alan went to the Bank of America, then went to a gas
14:46supplier, a business where you can buy tanks of propane, CO2, helium, and other gases.
14:52The next day, he went to another gas supplier.
14:54Then, at 6.30pm, Alan went to the site of his death for an hour before going home.
15:00Why did Alan go to the same field where he would be found dead 12 hours later?
15:04They looked through Alan's emails, hoping for some kind of answer, but they weren't able to find one.
15:09However, they did discover why Alan was going to different gas suppliers.
15:13It turns out that he had purchased a weather balloon months ago.
15:16In all of the interviews they conducted, nobody ever mentioned that Alan had a hobby launching weather balloons.
15:22But in his emails with the company that made the weather balloons, Alan was asking very specific questions, including
15:50This secret life of weather balloons caught everybody off guard, but the detectives ultimately brushed it off as Alan's strange
15:57hidden hobby.
15:58Until months later, when the investigators made a huge breakthrough in the case.
16:02They discovered that when you use Google's voice command feature to make web searches, Google stores a recording of your
16:08voice on your phone.
16:10They looked into Alan's voice command search history and found these recordings.
16:38The detectives found searches of this nature going all the way back to 2009.
16:43Nine years before Alan's death.
16:46After making this discovery, all of the puzzle pieces suddenly fell into place and the detectives were able to form
16:51a clear timeline of events.
16:53On January 23rd, Alan went to the Bank of America and withdrew $500 cash.
16:59He then went to a gas supplier and purchased 40 cubic feet of helium.
17:03That was all they had in stock, so they directed him to another gas supplier, where he bought another 40
17:08cubic feet of helium the next day.
17:10That's 80 cubic feet total.
17:12The next day, on January 24th, once the sun had set, he snuck out to a dark field to hide
17:18his helium tanks and other supplies, preparing to carry out his plan the next morning.
17:23Then, on January 25th, he left his home at 5.53 a.m. before sunrise, holding a weather balloon in
17:30his left hand.
17:3037 minutes later, the investigators concluded that the entire incident was meticulously planned out by Alan, and the weather balloon
17:40was used to dispose of the so-called murder weapon.
17:42All of the other items found at the scene were part of this elaborate scheme to make his death look
17:47like a robbery gone wrong.
17:49It was also concluded that the strange blood stain on his shirt was caused by a string hanging from the
17:54balloon as it floated away carrying the gun.
17:57They put the weather conditions from the day of Alan's death into an online weather balloon tracker,
18:02and they were able to simulate the balloon's path of travel following the shooting.
18:06It first went west for a few miles, before making a U-turn and heading east.
18:11It then traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, and eventually burst about 40 miles north of the Bahamas.
18:17The weather balloon, the gun, and the casing attached to it were never recovered.
18:22Finally, six months into the investigation of Alan's death, it was now clear that Alan was pulling the strings all
18:28along.
18:29All of this evidence was presented to the medical examiner, and Alan's manner of death was changed.
18:34But why did Alan do this?
18:35Investigators believed that Alan wanted to guarantee that his family received the money from his life insurance policy.
18:42However, in an unexpected twist, Alan's insurance company told the investigators that his policies would have been paid out regardless,
18:50since he had opened them several years in advance.
