00:00What you are watching is the moment Grand Rapids police officers respond to a violent shooting in
00:04the West Grand neighborhood. When they arrived on the scene, officers found a red Dodge Charger
00:15on the grass next to the road. Inside the vehicle, they found a young male covered in blood,
00:20still showing some signs of life.
00:42As the paramedics fought to keep 32-year-old Mikey Munson alive, two men approached a nearby
00:48fence to ask if he was okay.
01:09It was unclear if these mysterious men were Mikey's concerned friends, or if they were
01:14the shooters, confirming that their target was dead. The officer quickly ran back to the fence
01:19to catch a glimpse of their vehicle, a gray Dodge Charger.
01:36Several patrol units were told to be on the lookout for a gray Dodge Charger, while the officers
01:41on the scene spoke to witnesses.
01:58Although the witnesses saw that the shooter was driving a black SUV, they were unable to
02:03see the actual shooter. Unfortunately, none of the surveillance cameras nearby captured
02:07the shooter either. However, they were able to get some insight by looking at the bullet
02:12holes in the car. Two bullets had struck the vehicle. One of them hit the rear passenger
02:16side door, and the other went straight through the front passenger side window, hitting Mikey
02:21directly in the head. Based on the accuracy of this shot, the detectives believed that both
02:25vehicles were stopped at the time of the shooting. After being hit, Mikey accelerated over the curb
02:30and stopped on the grass. While inspecting Mikey's vehicle, the investigators also found an abundance
02:36of cash, drugs, and several cell phones, leading them to wonder if this was a drug deal
02:41gone wrong. The medics were eventually able to stabilize Mikey's vitals.
02:45Mike, hang in there, buddy, all right?
02:47What are you going to do?
02:48Get you up to the hospital, okay?
02:50He was loaded into an ambulance and transported to the nearest hospital for emergency surgery.
02:54Meanwhile, the details of Mikey's shooting were broadcast by several local news stations.
02:59The investigation continues this afternoon after a man was shot.
03:03Grand Rapids police received a report of a man with blood on him in the driver's seat
03:07of a parked car.
03:08If you know or saw anything, please reach out to Silent Observer.
03:11At this point, the investigators were unsure if Mikey was going to survive.
03:15Little did they know, this wouldn't be the only shooting to happen that day.
03:259-1-1, where's your emergency?
03:27At 9.58 p.m., 9-1-1 calls began pouring in to report a shooting in the Highland Park
03:32neighborhood,
03:32just three miles away from where Mikey was shot.
03:36There was about six or seven shots fired off the cell on Coward and Leonard.
03:40Officers immediately rushed to the scene.
03:42Do you have a victim?
03:44Was someone shot?
03:46Yes, there was.
03:46Although this witness said that somebody had been shot, the officers were unable to find
03:51any victims.
03:52Apparently, the shooting was between two vehicles, and both vehicles had already fled the scene.
03:57Anybody witness anything?
04:00What vehicles did we see?
04:01SUV, older model, maybe before 2010.
04:05It was a Durango.
04:05There you go, yep.
04:06I don't know the exact name of it.
04:07Okay.
04:08After speaking with more witnesses, the officers learned that a black Dodge Durango was shot
04:12at by somebody driving a gray Dodge Charger.
04:15But nobody saw who was in either vehicle.
04:18So, they asked the local news to release these details, hoping more witnesses would come forward
04:22with information.
04:23As for the suspect, right now police is still searching for that person.
04:27We do know this is a neighborhood that is a mix of residential and businesses in the
04:31area.
04:32So, police actually are working with them right now.
04:35They're using that surveillance video, trying to figure out where that person is.
04:38After closing off the street with crime scene tape, the officers retrieved the surveillance
04:42footage from a nearby bar called the College Inn.
04:45Just before 10 p.m., the black Durango can be seen waiting at a red light when the gray
04:50charger suddenly pulls up beside it and fires multiple shots.
04:56Both vehicles then speed off down the street.
04:59The investigators immediately wondered if these were the same vehicles involved in Mikey's
05:04shooting.
05:04Maybe the black Durango was the same SUV that the witnesses saw fleeing the crime scene.
05:09I heard pop, pop.
05:10There was an SUV and it went peeling off down the road after he did that.
05:14And maybe the people who checked on Mikey, the people driving the gray charger, were his
05:19friends.
05:19And they tracked down the black Durango to get revenge.
05:22Unfortunately, the detectives couldn't make out the license plates on these vehicles from
05:26the bar surveillance footage.
05:28And they couldn't find any other clues as to where the vehicles went following the shooting.
05:32So, the detectives told Grand Rapids patrol officers to be on the lookout for a gray Dodge
05:37charger and the black Dodge Durango.
05:40In the meantime, the detectives looked through Mikey's social media for answers.
05:43And they discovered that he was actually an up-and-coming rapper who went by the name Mikey North.
05:49In his songs, Mikey rapped about one thing more than anything, drug dealing.
05:53It turns out that Mikey was a well-known pusher in Grand Rapids.
05:57And even went to prison for six years for an incident involving one of his customers.
06:02The customer had owed him money.
06:04So, Mikey went to his house and threatened him with a gun.
06:07The customer then snatched the gun from Mikey's hands and shot him in the leg.
06:11Mikey fought to get the gun back and was eventually successful.
06:14But the customer's mom jumped between them to protect her son.
06:17So, Mikey shot her in the leg.
06:20Thankfully, this incident didn't escalate any further.
06:23Mikey drove himself to the hospital to get bandaged up.
06:25And as he sat in one of the rooms, the mom he just shot rolled past him in a wheelchair
06:30and exclaimed that Mikey was the one who shot her.
06:33The police showed up soon after.
06:35And Mikey was promptly arrested and charged for the shooting.
06:38Thanks to a plea deal, he was only sentenced to six years in prison.
06:42He was released from prison in 2021 and had an emotional reunion with his children.
06:55But just weeks later, Mikey went straight back to selling drugs.
06:59At one point, in 2023, Mikey had another run-in with the police after he stole a vehicle and
07:05was drug-dealing out of it in the town of Portage, Indiana.
07:08When he was confronted by the police in the middle of one of his deals, Mikey took off and
07:12a high-speed chase ensued.
07:14He hopped on Interstate 94 and outran the police by driving on the shoulder of the highway.
07:19The chase continued east for over 20 minutes before he made a left turn and headed towards
07:23Michigan City.
07:24At this point, the officers from Portage backed off and authorities from Michigan City and
07:29Trail Creek took over the chase.
07:31Right before he entered the city, the poor road conditions caused Mikey to crash his vehicle,
07:35so he hopped out and fled authorities on foot.
07:38After hunting Mikey down, officers formed a perimeter around him, deploying a drone and
07:42a police canine.
07:44Eventually, Mikey surrendered.
07:46Police found drugs and $855 in cash in Mikey's pockets.
07:50He received multiple charges and wound up back in prison for the next year and a half.
07:54He was released in June of 2024 and was out of prison for just 90 days before he was gunned
08:00down.
08:00This shooting seemed like yet another drug-related incident because when the investigators looked
08:05through the red Dodge Charger, the vehicle he was shot in, they found over $100,000 worth
08:10of drugs and cash throughout the vehicle.
08:12The detectives couldn't help but wonder if history was repeating itself.
08:16Maybe Mikey was confronting one of his customers who owed him money and he ended up getting shot.
08:21The detectives had a feeling that Mikey's cell phones held the answers they were looking
08:25for.
08:25But while the digital forensics unit worked on extracting the data from Mikey's phones, the
08:30detectives had a major breakthrough.
08:31A patrol officer stumbled upon a gray Dodge Charger with the driver still inside the vehicle.
08:37He immediately called in backup.
08:39Once backup arrived, the suspect was instructed to exit the vehicle.
08:43Is there anybody else in the vehicle or just you two?
08:45I want you to step out facing away from me with your hands on top of your head.
08:49Hands on your head when you get out.
08:51Face away from us.
08:53Alright, I'm going to have you walk back to the sound of my voice.
09:07The driver, 36-year-old Del McDonald, refused to speak to the police.
09:12But based on looks alone, the officers were certain that Del was one of the people who
09:16checked on Mikey after he was shot.
09:18After a quick look through Mikey's social media, the investigators discovered that Del and
09:23Mikey were close acquaintances.
09:24The two had several pictures posing together and clearly had a shared interest in music.
09:29It turns out that Del is also an up-and-coming rapper that goes by the name C-Styles and
09:35had
09:35collaborated with Mikey North in several music videos.
09:38After making sure Del was safely detained, the officers checked the charger to make sure
09:42there were no other suspects hiding inside the vehicle.
09:45Approaching the vehicle, distance, making sure there's no one inside.
09:52Empty vehicle, passenger side.
09:54There was nobody else inside the car and there was no direct evidence linking this vehicle
09:58to the shootings.
10:00Ultimately, the officers didn't have enough to arrest Del for shooting up the Durango.
10:04However, they still charged Del for driving without a license, but he was free to go.
10:09After running into several dead ends, the detectives were beginning to lose hope.
10:13Until, they finally gained access to the contents of Mikey's multiple cell phones.
10:17On one of them, they found a video he recorded right before the shooting.
10:21In this video, Mikey is in the car trailing the black Dodge Durango, making several statements
10:26about wanting to fight the driver.
10:28I think there's a dog right here, y'all.
10:30The video then cuts out at 12.50pm, just moments before the 911 calls reported shots fired.
10:39Luckily for the detectives, in this footage, the license plate of the Durango was clear
10:43as day.
10:44So the detectives looked up this license plate in their database and were able to figure
10:47out exactly who the driver of the Durango was.
10:50A man known by some of the community as Jay.
10:54The Grand Rapids Fugitive Task Force worked tirelessly to locate Jay.
10:58After a multi-day manhunt, they eventually received word that he was staying at a motel on the city's
11:03outskirts.
11:03Lead Detective Katie Roszkowski called the motel and the staff confirmed that Jay was
11:09staying there, in room 104.
11:11Soon after, Katie received a call from that same room.
11:21Detective Roszkowski, I wasn't looking for you at a hotel.
11:26It wasn't me.
11:28You called me, so what can I help you with?
11:31Phone, you have my number now, so if you need anything else, give me a call.
11:35It turns out that the motel Jay was staying in was managed by his girlfriend's mom, so
11:39he caught wind that the cops were looking for him.
11:42But before the detectives moved in on him, they received tragic news.
11:46And we begin with breaking news out of Grand Rapids tonight, where police say one person
11:50has died after a shooting.
11:52Mikey, who had been in the hospital clinging to life for the past five days, had succumbed
11:57to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
11:59Now that this case was officially a homicide, the detectives pulled out all the stops and
12:03had the Grand Rapids SWAT team handle the arrest.
12:06Was it room 104?
12:08Yeah.
12:08It's the fourth door.
12:12Come to me.
12:13Come to me.
12:16Turn around.
12:17No.
12:18Walk to your right.
12:20Stop.
12:21Backwards to the sound of my voice.
12:23Keep coming.
12:24Keep coming.
12:26Stop right there.
12:26Jay was put in the back of a cruiser and transported to the police station, where he was brought
12:31into the interrogation room for questioning.
12:34All right.
12:34So, somebody tried to kill you, basically, on Friday night.
12:39And a guy got shot earlier on in the day.
12:41And it sounds like maybe he didn't like you all that much.
12:45I can't.
12:46I can't say no nobody liked me.
12:48Okay.
12:49I'm not a confrontational type of person.
12:53Well, the guy got shot in like New York.
12:54You know, like New York, that's us.
12:56No.
12:57Okay.
12:57I know it's New York from around.
12:59As far as New York.
13:01Okay.
13:02The other day, you got shot.
13:04Do you remember if you were by yourself during the day?
13:06I was fishing.
13:07What's it?
13:08And was anybody fishing with you?
13:09No.
13:10Okay.
13:11Were you driving the triangle then?
13:13Okay.
13:13For some reason, Jay seemed to have no problem admitting that he was in the area on the day
13:18of the shooting, driving around in his Dodge Durango.
13:21I'm going to be honest with you.
13:24Seconds prior to this, our victim is filming your vehicle.
13:29Filming a confrontation he had with you.
13:32And I don't know how to get around that because that's not happening up to anything you're telling
13:35me here, man.
13:35The detective is lying here.
13:37Our victim is filming a confrontation he had with you.
13:41There was no footage of a confrontation recorded directly before the shooting.
13:46The phone video we showed you earlier was all they had.
13:49The detectives were hoping this statement would pressure Jay into providing more information.
13:53But this tactic didn't work.
13:55Jay was adamant that he never interacted with Mikey.
13:58Him having a confrontation with me, men may never say a word to each other.
14:01He's got his follow-up.
14:02He's like, here's this.
14:03Right here, man.
14:05I'm getting ready to do something.
14:06Video of me.
14:08The detectives were able to find one surveillance camera that captured Mikey's car pulling up
14:13beside the Durango for a moment.
14:15But even that wasn't enough to elicit a confession.
14:18That's his car.
14:19That's your car.
14:20Your window is down.
14:23They know what kind of car you drive.
14:26He's pulling up to confirm it's you in there.
14:29I feel like it's a picture trying to be painted.
14:32This is your opportunity to take the brush from me, then paint it.
14:36And tell me, tell me what it is.
14:38You know what I'm saying?
14:40I don't know.
14:41I talk with y'all, my lord.
14:42Since Jay asked for a lawyer, the interview was concluded.
14:45And without any concrete evidence for an arrest, the detectives had no choice but to let him go.
14:51I'm talking to the prosecutor about this.
14:52We don't have any intention of doing anything today.
14:54We're going to let you go all along.
14:55But if they end up charging you with us, are you going to turn yourself in?
14:59Or, I mean, we're going to have, you know what I'm saying?
15:02Okay, I don't want to have to go through this whole kind of thing like we did here.
15:06Did you just say you were on a GPS tether?
15:08Like on your ankle tether?
15:10Where did you put your leg?
15:11The detectives just realized that Jay was wearing a GPS ankle monitor that had been tracking his every move throughout
15:18the entire investigation.
15:19Something that would have been great to know before wasting countless resources tracking him down.
15:24All right, I didn't even know that.
15:28This specific ankle monitor was issued by the court directly, so it didn't show up in their system, which is
15:34why they missed this detail in the first place.
15:36The interview with Jay was concluded, and he was free to go for now.
15:39The detectives obtained the GPS data from the ankle monitor right away, and leading up to the shooting, Jay's location
15:45perfectly aligned with the location data from Mikey's phone.
15:48At 1247 p.m., both Mikey and Jay were on Clancy Avenue near Belknap Park.
15:54Just three minutes later, at 1250 p.m., while Mikey filmed the video we showed you earlier of him stalking
16:00the Durango, Jay's location seemed to be just meters away.
16:03At 1251 p.m., the minute that the shooting took place, Jay's ankle monitor pinged at 1129 Turner Avenue, which
16:11was just down the street from where Mikey was shot.
16:14With a clear timeline linking Jay to Mikey's movements, the detectives decided to bring this case to the state prosecutor,
16:21hoping to obtain an arrest warrant.
16:23They believed that all of the evidence they gathered would be enough.
16:36They were wrong.
16:37After taking a look at the evidence, the prosecutor refused to press charges.
16:41As damning as the GPS and video evidence was, the detectives had no murder weapon, no way to confirm that
16:47Jay was the one driving the vehicle, and no clear motive for Jay to want Mikey dead.
16:51Patrol officers were even able to locate the Dodge Durango riddled with bullet holes from the drive-by shooting.
16:57But even still, there wasn't enough evidence to link Jay to Mikey's death.
17:01In the end, Jay received no charges.
17:03The Grand Rapids Police Department has not publicly released Jay's full name or any additional information to identify him.
17:10They have also censored his face in all of the body cam footage, as you can see throughout this video.
17:15Following Mikey's death, the police ask the community to help bring justice to his killer.
17:19However, no additional leads have been discovered, and the case has essentially gone cold.
17:24To this day, people can only speculate why Mikey Munson was killed.
17:28Perhaps he confronted a customer about money he was owed.
17:31I think there's a dog right here, y'all.
17:33Maybe this was some sort of rap beef turned deadly.
17:36Or maybe it was because he broadcasted to the world that he's not afraid to harm his enemy's family.
17:44In August of 2024, Mikey went on the Kid L podcast where he talked about his life in the streets
17:49of Grand Rapids,
17:51his extravagant spending habits, his rap career, and the drama that came with it.
17:55And most importantly, he explicitly highlighted the incident where he shot his customer's mom.
18:00Just a few weeks after this podcast went live, Mikey was killed.
18:04But wait, during the making of this video, we noticed one thing that made our heads turn.
18:09In the weeks leading up to Mikey Munson's murder, Mikey posted on his social media directly calling out an unnamed
18:15enemy.
18:16You prey on my downfall so bad because of a female.
18:20What that make y'all?
18:21It seemed that he may have been involved in some sort of love triangle.
18:25Not only that, but the day before his murder, he made one last haunting post
18:29where he made a snarky remark about how unloyal people end up being roadkill.
18:34As far as we could tell during our research, there has never been any investigation into this deadly love triangle
18:40theory.
18:41And we wonder if Jay or a scorned lover had put out a hit on Mikey.
18:45Many people who heard about Mikey's death believed karma got the better of him after shooting someone's mom.
18:51But for the most part, people saw Mikey's death as a complete tragedy.
18:55On posts about Mikey's death, the comment sections are filled with people from all over Grand Rapids paying their respects.
19:01Even a well-known boxer, Peter Quillen, knew Mikey personally and publicly mourned his passing.
19:07He posted on Instagram saying,
19:09Today, I mourn the loss of my little cousin, Michael Munson.
19:12It's a heartbreaking reality that I never expected to face.
19:15In this moment of sorrow, I encourage you all to listen to my words.
19:19Find the old version of yourself and remind them that the new you is here to stay.
19:23Life is a journey, and even in the darkest times,
19:26we can honor those we've lost by striving to become better versions of ourselves.
19:30Let's cherish the memories, embrace change, and continue to grow.
19:34Rest in peace, Michael.
19:56Rest in peace, Michael.
19:57Rest in peace, Michael.
20:03Rest in peace, Michael.
20:07Rest in peace, Michael.
20:11Rest in peace, Michael.
20:12Rest in peace, Michael.
20:12Rest in peace, Michael.
