00:02For the past six months, John and his two-year-old son have felt safe at Yissa.
00:07But he's once again facing an uncertain future.
00:10I've been homeless for over four years and now that I have my son back in my care,
00:16my main priority is him and his safety.
00:19He's among hundreds of residents, including children,
00:23living in this Darwin short-stay accommodation centre
00:26that the NT government will close in less than 90 days.
00:30The government says the lease is coming to an end in October
00:33and it hasn't been able to strike a new deal with the owner, Ausco.
00:37We offered a fair market price in an effort to be able to continue to function at that site.
00:44Let's just say that their response was far from fair.
00:47She insists there is a plan to move people elsewhere.
00:50But critics question where in a housing and homelessness crisis.
00:55I think the main thing that everybody's concerned about is that when the time comes,
01:00is there going to be a place for them to move in because no one wants to be on the
01:05street,
01:06especially for the families that have little children.
01:09We feel that the white government, whether CLP or whoever, is targeting the Aboriginal people.
01:19Nobody knows where we're going to go. So all of us are going to be homeless.
01:22Yissa currently houses more than 230 adults and around 150 children,
01:29many of them living here for several years.
01:32It's clear that the government doesn't have a plan.
01:34Again, announcing this 90-day closure without a site and a location for very vulnerable people to move to
01:43is just not the way to go about things.
01:45If people don't speak up, we're going to lose our place to stay.
01:49Residents hoping the government's plans to relocate them don't fall through.
01:53Thank you so much, Dr.
01:53We'll be here for you!
01:54Thanks, Rachael.
01:54Just a second.
01:54And now, you know, I think it's fine.
01:54We'll be right back here.
01:54We'll be right back here.
01:54Let's go.
01:55We'll be right back here.
